I don't think TTYD's story is really better than Color Splash's one. On the contrary, Super Paper Mario has by far the best story of the series (and a tragic one).

CS is basically the same as Sticker Star's, Bowser is causing trouble, go stop him! Only this time Koopalings!
I dunno, that's what I got from watching gameplay and videos, if anything TOK seems to be kinda better? But...eh...

At least in TTYD bowser is just...there, you fight him a couple of times, but that's it, he's not the main threat. Also the bosses aren't Koopalings...or....office supplies...
with some weird puzzle ring battle thing

@Joeynator3000 if anything, the Koopalings are at their best in the RPGs so I don't see a problem with that

About Super Paper Mario, in Color Splash, there is an amazing stage that uses on of the main "tricks" of Super Paper Mario, but in a much more accomplished way, and giving the player an incredible nostalgia feeling: I shivered when playing that stage!

Actually, Color Splash looks like a combination of many elements of the series (but with also unique things). For example, there is one stage when we interact again with spectators when fighting enemies. There is an entire "pirate chapter" that is much more accomplished than what we have in TTYD. Even the "train chapter" is better in CS.

Sincerely, memorable ideas, there are a lot in Color Splash. And I say again: Color Splash is by far the best performance of the Koopalings in all Mario series (platformers or RPG games).

Speaking about Bowser: he is just a dumb and useless character in TTYD, a very big disappointment to me. Just a clumsy "fan service": if that was for that, I would have preferred Bowser to be complety absent. I prefer when a Mario game makes Bowser the main frightening antagonist, like Ganondorf, and not a silly villain. This is also a reason why I like "Dream Team Bros" better compared to other "Mario & Luigi" games, because Bowser became again a diabolical and devious villain, like he was in the original N64 game.

Let’s remember this thread is for discussing The Thousand Year Door, it’s cool that we enjoy other games in the series, but let’s not turn this into a sales pitch for them.

I prefer unique villains, it's just that I'm tired of seeing the same main villain all the time. Dream Team is the only exception because because it still had a unique main antagonist that just ended up not being the final boss.

I've probably said something similar before but I was undecided if I would give Origami King a shot or not until TTYD remake was announced. Because I feel less annoyed at TOK for now not feeling like a complete replacement for some of my favorite games for stupid reasons.

Some might say that's dumb but there are many good games I could play and spend my money on and I genuinely feel less cynical about that game now. I feel kinda bad for TOK, regardless of its flaws, because its unfair that a creative game was dragged into this nonsense.

For similar reasons Nintendo needs to make a new traditional Zelda game again or else discussion on open world Zelda will become incredibly obnoxious.

@kkslider5552000 "For similar reasons Nintendo needs to make a new traditional Zelda game again or else discussion on open world Zelda will become incredibly obnoxious." I'd like a new 2D game.

(Ok, I'm also thinking about stopping off-topic, no problem, but it was an interesting and friendly discussion)

@Ralizah I only listed exp as one reason. What I meant is that there is no point to do ‘boring’ battles if you don’t even get rewarded for doing so.

In Origami King you get tons of coins for battling which are useful for a lot of things. I thought they hit that line pretty well by making battles useful but also making it easy to skip a lot of them if you don't want to grind.

To get this thread back on topic, I made a separate thread

600 posts in, half of which have not been about the game, it may be too late to be on topic 😝 tbh, at this point the thread creator should just rename the thread 'TTYD and other Mario RPGs'.

Finally got TTYD today! Made it to chapter 1. Still as good as it's ever been and I'm liking the new music. It looks gorgeous for a Switch game, as well.

This game is incredible on Switch.

One of the best games in the library all generation. Alongside Mario RPG remake and two Mario Rabbids srpgs, we're downright spoiled with masterpieces to the point the word is starting to lose any meaning.

I've been playing pretty consistently all week and am at the final boss. It's a great game, and the balance of strategy and execution has been fun. I never got into turn-based combat before, but maybe the combination of choice and input at point of attack will get me going on other games of the sort. I might dive into Mario RPG next. It's been a while since a game drew me in this much that didn't have Zelda in the title.

I love the fact that the NPC dialogue and cutscenes in chapter 4 actually reflected the fact I was using the Wario badge when the switch happened.

Can’t say if that’s new or if it was like that on the GameCube, but it’s still nice attention to detail.

@Eel I noticed that as well! Super cool attention to detail. I don’t remember if it was in the original or not.

Did they make the timing for the Power Bounce more strict in this version? That's what it feels like to me. I keep screwing it up early on in my attempts. It looks like you can't do stylish moves while doing the Power Bounce, too.

@MarioVillager92 Since this is a remake timing was reworked and I believe a bit harder. I believe you can use stylish jumps, however timing could be a bit different (use the Battle Master Toad and it’ll show you when you can do it!)

For context, Power Bounce was pretty OP in the original with some strategies, so that could perhaps be the reason for this change.

This move and a certain move similar to it were pretty hard for me to get used to, but the Battle Master Toad surprisingly helps a lot!

People kept telling me it's because of the framerate that the timings feel harder, which I know isn't the case, some things were changed. Some timing stuff seems the same, others seem easier, others seem harder, etc. >.<

@Joeynator3000 Yeah whoever said that probably didn’t play the game XD

Idk why people refuse to see that it’s a rework/balancing for the game, I feel like other games do that to make it more fair, and looks like it’s the case with this one!

Most things feel same difficulty, besides a few things that feel harder. It’s an odd choice, but once you think about it the things that got reworked had a good reason for it.

I doubt it's framerate at all and just balance change stuff, like...in the original I could never bother with superguards (or whatever it's called, where you can counter certain enemy attacks), yet in the remake it's mostly easy.
