Topic: Nintendo switch lifespan

How many more years do you guys think Nintendo will keep selling the switch?

I heard on YouTube saying mentioning that they might stop making the switch in 2024 and realese a "New Nintendo Game Console (not a switch revison)"

and another YouTube guy suggesting they will continue to sell the switch until 2026.

I also heard multiple articles that if Nintendo does create a "New Nintendo console" (sussesor to the switch) it would be a backward compatible with the switch games (which I hope as well).

With knowing the switch is Nintendos #1 best Nintendo seller of all times I can't believe that Nintendo would stop selling the switch in 2024 and move on to another console all together.

I really hope Nintendo would come up with a switch 2 or switch pro instead of an all new console.

As anyone else have ideas?

@Tay205
Probably in 2024, with support for the switch for 1-2 more years. Also this thread will probably get locked down.

With the upcoming Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC scheduled until the end of 2023, I wouldn't expect a successor until maybe early 2024 (maybe around the 7th anniversary of the Switch).

The Switch still has a lot of life in it yet. We'll probably see fewer AAA third-party titles going forward, but most games should be scalable to the hardware with some arguably inconsequential compromises.

In the meantime, I would love a Switch Micro.

2 years ago I would've bet a Switch successor would've come out exactly 7 years after the Switch released (so March 2024). Now, I'm not so sure. The pandemic both inevitably lead to game delays from them, and also lead to even more interest in the Switch, so it feels like they've been given even more time to not have to release a new system. My guess right now is holiday 2024 at the earliest.

But I dunno how long they'll support the Switch beyond Switch 2's release or whatever. I do feel like they're gonna pull another Twilight Princess/BOTW and have a huge game on both consoles for the launch day of the system (why wouldn't you after it worked so well twice now?), but after that, its hard to say. Nintendo's usually good at supporting their handhelds after the next one is out and is usually really bad at supporting their consoles past that point (Pandora's Tower is the only time Nintendo put out a game with its successor console already out post-SNES, and 3rd parties usually give up too).

@Tay205 I heard someone who works for nintendo, on youtube saying they will continue switch for around 14years with a slow down of game releases on the last 4 Most consoles have around 7 years, Probadly be a proper update of the first one then. Oled or switch lite or better battery life are not great updates

Tay205

@Ninfan wow 14 years? I would take that to heart beat.

I been buying games left and right and still enjoy all of the games I own.

I hope it goes for total of 14 years but I don't think that will happen unless they make the switch 2 as their next game system and make the switch 2 the sussesor to the current switch and make the switch 2 play all the current switch games plus new excusive games to the new switch 2 console.

I hope theirs a switch 2 on the horizon

I'm saying March of 2024 will be the new model. As @Silly_G said, the MK8 DLC doesn't even end until 2023. It could also set up the successor to launch with MK9, which we all know would be absolutely insane lol

The Switch will probably still be in production into 2026 or 2027. But that shouldn't keep Nintendo from introducing their next platform in 2024 or 2025. Considering the Switch's struggle to get current-gen ports, third party support (that isn't work contracted by Nintendo a la Monster Hunter Rise) will continue
to slow down. The Switch successor doesn't have to be anything wild, performance near the level of a Steam Deck released three years from now, seems like a reasonable expectation.

I agree with @Magician, in all likelihood the switch will still be in in production until 2026 or later. It's interesting to compare with Microsoft and Sony, Sony have continued production of the PS4 whilst Microsoft have ceased production of the XBOX One - I know there were a number of factors in those decisions, but it will be interesting to see what Nintendo do.

I'm expecting the LCD models to stop production much sooner, I wouldn't be surprised if an OLED Lite is launched within the next 12 months, maybe they stop LCD production before the end of 2023?

Also, I wonder if the next Switch will use the same OLED screen? I don't think there is any benefit in going above 720p. I think features like HDR etc are more important than on the handheld screen.

@kkslider5552000 hopefully on the next nintendos new console be either a new generation switch like switch pro or switch 2 or a brand new console that will play switch games as well.

I would like to see Nintendo realese a switch pro as their next generation console instead of a new console.

I believe if Nintendo makes a switch pro as their next generation console the pro model can have a fresh lifespan (like Nintendo did for the wii u) and put another 7 years on it.

However if Nintendo did make a switch pro I want it to be like the OLED switch and can play current switch games and excessive games for the prom

I just don't want Nintendo to release a new console and say good bye to the switch since it's Nintendos best seller

I don't think we will get a new console until 2025.
Mario Kart DLC runs until end of 2023, and they will probably wait a year after that before they release a new console.

MarioBrickLayer

with todays announcement about the 3DS and WiiU eshops closing, I wonder how long after they stop producing this generation of Switches will we continue to get online support? It's less than 2.5 years since they stopped producing the 3DS...

Will it be different if the account and online infrastructure is shared with the next generation?

Given that the Switch is still so successful I don't think we will see a successor anytime soon. Possibly not even in 5 years.

I think it's more likely that we will get a Switch Pro in maybe 3 years, that will allow you to play 1st Party titles with better graphics settings, and that will be necessary to play Current-Gen Ports.

But the original Switch will still be supported with 1st Party and Indie titles for a long time.

I think the switch has a good 2, 3 good years still left in it. If they wanted to make an updated dock this number would increase ten fold.

A Spring 2024 Launch for Successor of Switch is good to me…

SwitchForce

Games are coming out and pushing Switch limits the sooner a Update GPU Switch the better for them and their bottom line. Switch isn't getting any faster and only GPU/CPU upgrade will do that along with DOCKed 4k/DLSS to HDTV will improve the sales force. Switch is starting to show the limits of GPU horsepower and sooner the better for Nintendo Switch future expansions.

Honestly I think the earliest we'll even see a glimpse at the Switch's successor would be in 2025.
The Switch is still selling as if it just came out and it's momentum still hasn't stopped in the near 5 years it's been out on the market. It would be a dumb decision for Nintendo to start preparing for the next iteration of it so early, especially with the chip shortage crisis that's affecting everyone every other company and because again, it's still selling so well.
Another thing to mention is that Nintendo themselves still consider the Switch to be in the middle of its lifespan still.

Nintendo has taken to March hardware launches.

I suspect March 2024 is their tentative, penciled in target release window for Switch 2.

But, pending sales these next 2 years, could theoretically get pushed back 1 more year to March 2025.

They release new revisions every 2 years. Fall 2021 was OLED, so next revision would land in Fall 2023. If Switch 2 is launching the following March, they'll likely skip the final revision and just announce a price cut to coast until Switch 2, since it would only be 6 months away.

However.

If they decide to postpone 1 extra year to March 2025, I suspect we will get one final revision in Fall 2023. But it wouldn't be a "Pro". It would likely be a lower cost model like a docked-only Switch, a 7" LCD model with all the same changes as the OLED (except the screen), or an OLED Lite.

I believe they said last year that the switch was in the middle of it's life-cycle, so it probably has a few more years left in it. Not to mention the production issues going on in the industry, which would probably set a new console back a bit.
