@skywake:

Wii U got a single new game announced, and the development of that game has clearly been accelerated, as they are using character art/models from a handheld game.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

@skywake: if you saaaaay so. But really does 3ds look like it's getting replaced in 8 months?

@iKhan: @WebHead:
A lot of the 3DS games that were talked about are already out in Japan. Fire Emblem Fates, Yokai Watch, Hyrule Warriors Legends, Monster Hunter Generations and Rhythm Heaven all exist in Japan. Some have been out for quite a few years. The only big 3DS games still in development are Pokemon, Kirby and Metroid.

By contrast most of the Wii U games not out yet aren't out in Japan. Lost Reavers and "Tokyo Mirage Sessions" came out in December last year in Japan. Twilight Princess HD, Zelda U, Star Fox Zero, Paper Mario: Color Splash and Star Fox Guard are not out yet. Anywhere. So the idea that the 3DS is getting more could be understandable coming from someone who watched the EU/NA direct. It wasn't the case for Japan.

@skywake: there's still ace attorney 6, dragon quest 11, etc.

Look, I respect your points and I commend you for sticking to your guns, but the proof is in the pudding at this point, don't you think?

@WebHead:
Again, what changed with this Direct? There were only a few new things to come out of that direct and they were fairly evenly split between the Wii U and 3DS.

You could argue that there aren't many Wii U games in development anymore and so they didn't have much to say. You could also argue that there are quite a few 3DS games that just need localisations and they're getting them out of the way now because by the time the next handheld is out nobody will care. Or both... or neither...

I just don't see how this Direct was proof of anything

lol, no they aren't. I'm pretty certain that this is made from scratch. If you're salty and need to complain, that's okay, but keep it down, okay? Not everything's doom and gloom.

Yeah I was wrong, never mind.

@skywake: What did change on the Wii U? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but we knew about Star Fox, right? And even Paper Mario (those were rumors, right? honestly, I'm not sure). But that other game is new to me (the Reavers game) - but is that it? So, I mean, if we're being realistic, one new game for the Wii U that we didn't know about?

So... I think the answer to your question is, on the Wii U front, "not much" changed - but I guess that is what makes people think the Wii U is on its way out.

skywake

@rallydefault: ok, but where was the huge influx of 3DS games we knew nothing about? Only a few of the things in the direct were new. Pretty much all of the 3DS announcments were localisations. Nothing really changed and for some reason you guys are acting like we now know so much more.

I don't get it.

I'm looking at the Wii U release schedule... aaaaaand it doesn't look any less crowded than the Wii U release schedule has looked in the past for first half. At no point has the Wii U ever been swimming in new releases during the Spring. Wii U definitely could've benefitted from Kirby Planet Robobot being a home console title, but it being on 3DS doesn't mean much, considering they used the Triple Deluxe engine entirely.

Yes, second half DOES look empty, but remember that once again, this was intended to be a short-sighted direct. If we go to E3 and the second half STILL looks empty for Wii U, then I'll concede, but by that point, Nintendo will HAVE to have announced the NX in full. And that, I feel, would be a HUGE misstep. Dev kits haven't been out for long, the rumors make the NX sound underpowered and as if it's another console the internet kiddies are going label "gimmicky." If Nintendo launches the console we're hearing about at the end of this year, what makes anyone think the NX will be competitive in the slightest?

Now, personally, I'm not too fussed about the numbers. I'll probably enjoy the system, but I would also like to point out that Zelda U was one of the reasons I got a Wii U. If Nintendo's about to turn around and tell us that there was no advantage to getting a Wii U for Zelda U, I will actually feel somewhat cheated. Unreasonably so, I know, as I've gotten plenty of use out of my Wii U, but that would just kinda feel like Nintendo tricked us. Maybe if, like smm1 said, they release in 2017 with the game as a launch title and maybe even announce that'll happen beforehand so that people won't feel like they were misled into buying a Wii U for a game they could've just waited for the NX for, that could achieve the best possible effect, but I still feel that 2016 is just far too soon. Especially considering it's March and we know absolutely nothing about this system.

@skywake: what part of spring and summer didn't you get. Sure there'll be mostly nx talk but there'll surely be 3ds stuff at e3. Sheesh.

I give up. You peeps be stubborn AF

@WebHead: You're assuming that E3 will be primarily NX and 3DS stuff, but what if it's primarily NX and Wii U stuff? Or what if they show off the NX and a couple launch titles, but most of the presentation is Wii U and 3DS stuff?

When I look at that list, it seems like 3ds are getting much more support. Both in quantity and quality.

@WebHead: Sounds to me like "I've decided on my own that this is the way it's going to be, so that's what I'm going with." No offense, but I see ABSOLUTELY no evidence to suggest the 3DS will be any more populated next half than it appears now. Same with the Wii U. For all we know, they could be dropping both systems.

As for the sheer number, OF COURSE THE 3DS IS GETTING MORE SUPPORT. How often has that not been the case? The Wii U has always gotten the weaker end of the support due to low sales and third parties sticking with the system they thought they'd do better on.

No, the Wii U doesn't appear to be slowing down. Just its usual amount of slowness.

2nd half 2012: 16 games released in Japan
1st half 2013: 14 games released in Japan
2nd half 2013: 27 games released in Japan
1st half 2014: 24 games released in Japan
2nd half of 2014: 34 games released in Japan
1st half of 2015: 29 games released in Japan
2nd half of 2015: 42 games released in Japan
1st half of 2016: 18 confirmed game releases in Japan with plenty of other titles that will likely release in the first half.

But maybe that's misleading. Let's look at major releases:
2nd half of 2012: New Super Mario Bros U, ZombiU, Nintendoland (3)
1st half of 2013: (0)
2nd half of 2013: Rayman Legends, Lego City Undercover, Windwaker HD, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101 (6)
1st half of 2014: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 (2)
2nd half of 2014: Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Smash 4 Wii U, Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker (4)
1st half of 2015: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Mario Party 10, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon (4)
2nd half of 2015: Yoshi's Woolly World, Devil's Third, Super Mario Maker, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (5)
1st half of 2016: Twilight Princess HD, Pokken Tournament, Star Fox Zero (3)

3, 0, 6, 2, 4, 4, 5, 3
2nd half: 3, 6, 4, 5
1st half: 0, 2, 4, 3

I don't see it slowing down. There's no argument to be had, here. If you're basing your jump in logic on a major slowdown of titles coming out, I'm not seeing one. And even then, that's based on Japan, if we flip it to US, it looks more like: 3, 1, 5, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4
2nd half: 3, 5, 4, 5
1st half: 1, 2, 3, 4

The slowdown is completely non-existant. The only time you see anything even remotely resembling slowdown is if you try to include 2nd half of 2016: 1 confirmed game with plenty of other titles that will likely release in the second half. Two major game releases: Paper Mario Color Splash, Zelda U.

The reason that doesn't actually MEAN anything is because Nintendo ALWAYS plays their cards close to their chest. They don't tell you things far in advance unless they want to drum up some serious hype for it. Face it, there's no evidence that the Wii U is going to stop putting out games any time soon. Just more people saying "I don't know about it, so it must not exist."

I dunno, the quality of the wii u games we've been getting tells me their big guns are focused elsewhere. Amiibo Festival, Ultra Smash, this Paper Mario, don't really seem like the stuff that Nintendo is putting 100% into. I'm guessing all their big teams are looking forward. We shall see in the coming months
