And if they hadn't done the reveal we have had about a thousand posts about how Nintendo are going mobile only. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

@Therad: you mean like how it was all since the GameCube days and whatnot?

WebHead

@Therad: That would have happened regardless. Who cares what the internet thinks, after all? Nintendo knows they aren't, so that's all that should matter. They didn't -need- to say a word about the NX, they chose to do so.

@Operative: personally I think if it was up to Kimishima it wouldn't have happened and nx would definitely be 2017.

Basically that exactly. All the NX mention really amounted to was "we're not going anywhere, we still have plans." People, as they often do, took that to mean "the Wii U is DOOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMEEEEEEEEED!!!!!"

If everyone would have thought Nintendo would go mobile only, Wii u and 3ds might have sold a lot less. This is the reason for the reveal. And as you said, people were talking about Nintendo going third-party before they revealed the mobile plans, this would have been greatly magnified.

I pretty much agree with you guys, and trust me - I DESPISE social media and stuff like that. You could even argue that forums like these are just gathering places for malcontents trying to scream louder than one another.

But no matter how I or any of you guys feel, word of mouth IS very important for a company - and, fortunately or unfortunately, the internet is kind of the place where word of mouth spreads fastest and broadest.

So, that being the case, I do think they had to, ultimately, announce something specific rather than just a vague, "Yea...we're working on something, as always." Because, if you remember, they WERE kind of saying that at the time. But, because of the commercial shortcomings of the Wii U coupled with the "just kidding - we ARE doing smart phone games!" announcement, people weren't really buying that Nintendo was going to stay in the dedicated console market. They HAD to say something less vague to, ultimately (I think), keep more gamers interested in them.

Regardless. I do think NX will be launching this November. With Zelda 2016 as cross platform launch title. If you want to play Zelda on Wii u, get it on Wii u. Simple as that.

Regardless of what their intentions were, I think we can all agree that the media has greatly blown up everything related to the NX. Nintendo mentioned it a handful of times, but if I got a penny of every article or forum thread on NX, I would be a millionaire, if not a billionaire.

@WebHead: It's definitely launching this Holiday season, no question about it.

@rallydefault: and if one is not ready, than don't buy it at launch. If you want to play Zelda on Wii u then get it on Wii u. No Wii u owner is being wronged.

I don't think they had to, but that's whatever. I think the fact that they gave it a codename and everything is an indicator that we're seeing it sooner than some people think. Especially with Iwata's mention that they want to reveal and release things much closer together from now on, to prevent others "copying" their ideas.

@Operative: On the other hand, he also acknowledged the fact that he mentioned the NX too early, but that it was a necessity to reaffirm their devotion to dedicated video game consoles.

@WebHead: Yea, I agree. If "Zelda for the Wii U" does, in fact, become "Zelda for the Wii U and... Zelda for the NX," just buy whichever version you want. We are not being snubbed in the least. We are still getting a Zelda game for the console, and the company we enjoy supporting will be launching a new system with a (hopefully) stellar game.

If the N64 would have launched with Ocarina, which some hail as the greatest game of all time, could you imagine the increased success that console would have seen?

Launching with a Zelda game is just a darn good idea, period. It's one of Nintendo's few IPs that still retains a somewhat mature reputation, and I would even argue, carries a broader appeal than Mario. These Xbox/PS gamers who love to rag on "kiddie Nintendo" eat up all these new Mario and Kirby and Donkey Kong games as more proof that Nintendo is only for kids. Zelda, however, has remained bulletproof to that mindset. They could reach a whole lot of people who have been gone.

Well the direct is over and the Emily Rogers and supermetaldave64 leaks were legit it seems. 3DS looks packed this year.

Still don't think we are getting a new home console this year?

I think the NX will probably launch with Zelda U. If the NX console releases this year, it'd be a Twilight Princess like scenario; if the NX console releases next year, then it'd be a The Last of Us situation (on PS3 and remastered a year later in 1080p). It simply makes more sense in order to make more sales. If Nintendo took the Twilight Princess approach with the GameCube (which probably sold a couple million more at the intended launch of Twilight Princess than the Wii U has sold now), logically it definitely makes sense to follow the same approach with a system that sold even less than the GameCube.

As a Wii U owner, I'm not exactly happy, since the Wii U would probably get an inferior version, but it simply makes sense in terms of business. However, the launching of Zelda with NX does not mean that the NX console will launch this year (though I do think it'll be out by summer 2017, if not this year).

I don't think the internet concerns them much at all. Certainly not the people who aren't fans of Nintendo and are unlikely to buy their products whatever they do. They only care about three groups of people. Fans, potential customers and investors.

The announcement of the NX was a bad move in terms of potential customers. I'll agree with that. It was kinda neutral in terms of the impact it had on fans because we're going to keep buying content regardless. But for investors it was a huge positive. Investors LOVE certainty and as much as we might be annoyed about the lack of detail we do know more than we otherwise would have. We know for sure that Nintendo is going to keep making pieces of gaming hardware.

@skywake: ready to accept nx is probably a 2016 home console yet?

@WebHead:
I'm curious about what you think has changed since this Direct. The 3DS got SNES VC, Kirby, Art Academy and a lot about localisations ect. The Wii U got Paper Mario, Lost Reavers, Starfox Guard and a few other updates/trailers ect. Were we watching the same direct? Because I don't think we were watching the same Direct.
