Zelda U being ported to a new portable device isn't that out of the realm of possibility. Mobile devices are damn powerful in today's day and age, and Nintendo has already successfully scaled down two large intensive games to handheld platforms.

The alleged source for all of this never said "Zelda U". It said "NX will launch in 2016 with a Zelda game". Even if we buy this whole thing 100% the talk about Zelda U was an assumption. An assumption based on two things:
1. The 3DS had some unannounced games, the main one being Pokemon I would assume
2. "Wii U sales are bad" etc, etc

Which ignores the fact that:
1. Pokemon Black/White launched alongside the 3DS. Pokemon Black/White 2 came out a year later
2. 3DS sales are also bad

Even if we believe his source is right about everything (and I'm not sure I do) I don't think we should believe his conclusions. Because really the "leak" didn't give us any more information than we already knew.

The fact that he nailed Niji I think gives the rumor some credibility. You don't guess Niji. Rainbow has been rumored in the past, but in that case "Niji" would have never been mentioned if that part of the leak was fake. It would have just said Rainbow. The only possible counterpoint is if Niji has been the codename for all main series Pokemon games for a certain number of years, leading to why Rainbow was rumored in the past.

The leaks give us quite a bit of information, not just the Zelda and NX stuff. It gives us the entire 3DS lineup in NA for the rest of the year, the Wii U's lineup and that there's only one unannounced game (Paper Mario?), and the entire marketing budgets for both systems.

As for Gematsu, that leak was based off of old information - it got Chrom and Chorus Kids wrong, but Chrom was considered and, if I recall correctly, there was evidence of a Rhythm Heaven character being planned in Smash 4's files.

I know I said I was done on this, but I'm happy to argue this one last point:
Rainbow was apparently used for X & Y, so it is reasonable to suppose that it is the codename for all Pokemon projects at this point. Also, considering the games are developed in Japan, it isn't unreasonable to think that they'd be using Japanese codenames as opposed to English ones, hence project "Niji".

@shaneoh: If that's the case, then it might not lend as much credibility as previously thought. Also, of course Nintendo would use Japanese codenames. I was suggesting that if SuperMetalDave was making up a leak, he'd have just said Rainbow, and not mentioned "Niji" at all.

@IceClimbers: Well, I think it's fascinating for someone to go back and reread this thread from the beginning. In such a short time span and seven pages, we've gone from "you people are idiots" (actually loosely quoting @shaneoh - lol lovely guy - ) to something more rational and open-minded.

In fact, I think most people have started to see that there are definitely bits of truth to this leak. More importantly, the thing I was campaigning for, is that this leaker has history, and he has a lot to lose. It really changes the whole dynamic, and I'm happy to see people being more level-headed in the last few pages.

At any rate, rumors are rumors. Very fun to talk about, but in the end - not reality one bit until the future happens.

Here's the link to the previous Rainbow Rumour that resulted in X & Y:

Some parts are spot on, some, completely wrong. Although maybe this gen we'll get Draconeon.

Very loosely, I said they're idiots. I also clarified that point, saying that it wasn't personal as I consider all people idiots, myself included. I was being nice. Whether the "leak" is true or not (still suspect not), will not change that opinion. Still, thanks for calling me lovely, your opinion means a lot to me.

Also if you type Rainbow into google translate you get Niji. So it's not particularly surprising that someone would land on that as a "codename" for the next Pokemon game. A game that we all knew would be coming this year and probably for the 3DS. Especially given that this year is a 20th anniversary.

It is surprising that someone would stick with it though. This revelation aside I think most people (myself included) would have laughed at the idea of "Pokemon Rainbow". Mostly because it's so predictable that you would just assume that someone was making it up. Though obviously it didn't stop people buying into it

Alright, so I've been out of the loop for a while due to Smash DLC ending and following the elections here in the US, but now I'm back aaaaaand nothing substantial has changed. Well, except for the layout of the entire site. So since I've only been paying so much attention (enough to hear the big announcements and rumors) do we have any REAL evidence that the NX is launching this decade, let alone this year? Or are people still just leaning on "oh, yeah, the Wii U is still doing bad, so Nintendo's gonna wanna abandon ship ASAP, if they know what's good for them?" Because once again, I've only seen the major rumors and announcements, and the later doesn't seem to support the former... like... at all.

@UGXwolf: It's still the same "Wii U is doing bad, so Nintendo wants to replace it this year".

UGXwolf

@Octane: Yeah, see that reasoning never really worked for me. I can see where they're coming from, but Nintendo would also be wary of messing up their new system and potentially losing more loyal users. Besides, I seriously doubt Nintendo's gonna reveal the system at E3 and then release it the same year. I'd even argue April is dangerously late to be showing the system off. This would be record-breakingly short for Nintendo in a lot of ways.

Still, speculation is fun, and there have been some interesting rumors flying around, I think. Just seems weird to me that nearly the entire gaming community has decided the NX is coming this year is true when we haven't even seen the system, yet.

@UGXwolf: Yeah, I'm with you on this. I don't think it's just the idea that it might be an issue for their loyal fan base. I mean, nobody looks at the 3DS, sales have been winding down pretty fast in the last 2 years, whilst the Wii U has sold at an consistent rate remarkably. As long as we don't have solid evidence or an official confirmation; I'll keep in mind that the idea that NX might also be a handheld console.

Anyway, we're going to see a lot more ''rumours'' and ''leaks'' until E3. I'll just wait and see what they do.

WebHead

@Octane: tbh I think it was a bad decision to announce codename nx last March. Wii u and 3ds are suffering from the Osborne effect.

WebHead

Octane

@WebHead: The problem is that Nintendo hasn't really announced anything. Codename ''NX''; in other words ''we're working on new hardware, like we always do.'' There's nothing new to that. It's just that the media won't stop talking about it.

Octane

WebHead

@Octane: true but I think a specific codename was a mistake.

I agree with webhead. Nintendo should have seen this coming from miles away. If they had just mentioned "as always, we start working on hardware when the previous one releases" similar to how Sony says they're always working on the next Playstation, people wouldn't be going crazy. Or maybe they would. Nintendo fans can get irrationally hyped over nothing. Well, all fans, really.
