If they don't show the last fighter at The Game Awards, and Nintendo does attend, my money is on a look of BotW 2. They did that once before at the Game Awards, so I could see them doing it yet again honestly.

@BrazillianCara The only thing I'm expecting Nintendo to do at the Game Awards is the last fighter reveal. Other than that, I doubt we'll see anything more than that. No BotW 2, no anything else. They've done the same thing every Game Awards, and they only do one thing during TGA.

Well actually at TGA 2017 they had BotW DLC and bayo 1+2 and 3

@Balta666 But generally, in recent years, they’ve only done one thing and it was the smash stuff.

@VoidofLight indeed but if we know one thing from Nintendo is to expect the unexpected

For Game Awards 2021 I think the Nintendo reveals will be BotW 2, Bayonetta 3 and the rumoured made for Switch Resident Evil game. Game Awards for Nintendo has mostly consisted of BotW, (timed) exclusive 3rd party games and Smash with the only 2 reveals that aren't any of those being Bayonetta 1-3 in 2017 and Mario Maker in 2014.

The 2020 Game Awards reveal was a big goose egg. As will this year’s , most likely.

I’m just hoping it’s not just smash, given the game awards is always miserable to sit through..

@VoidofLight I'd prefer that it is just Smash for the same reason. It's miserable to sit through so I just won't be sitting through it. Save the more interesting announcements for the next Direct.

I never watch the Game Awards but the announcements always get around to let me know which games got what .... & whatever games were revealed or whatever, too

@Isashihtzu ehhh them improving is mostly just subjective. If anything, the show last year was pretty bad, with the whole thing being rigged. The Last Of Us part 2 won every single category in which is was nominated for, despite other games that actually deserved the spot more being nominated.

VoidofLight

@Isashihtzu Eh, the fact that it won almost all of the categories it was nominated in makes me feel like they were paid off or something.

On the topic of Nintendo Directs, this is happening before March:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/09/rumour_it_looks_lik...

Despite the idiots in the comments parroting "rumour squaa" it's an FCC filing so it's litterally an official document for approval of hardware. They've given it a Switch hardware prefix so it's definitely for the Switch, it also specifically says controller and has bluetooth. And it has a confidentiality expiry for March 16th so they have to announce before then otherwise what's the point of making it confidential?

Here's where the speculation starts but, what is it? The way I see it there are three possibilities here:
1. Another Retro themed controller. Gameboy NSO is heavily rumoured so the most boring possibility is a Gameboy style Joycon, possibly copying the Super Gameboy controller. Which is kinda lame and frankly a bit pointless but that's where my expectations are set. Along the same lines, N64.... which would mean N64 on NSO which is less likely. Gamecube there's no point because the Switch already supports Gamecube controllers, Wii equally so because technically they could support WiiMotes with a software update

2. Some controller specific to some as of yet unnaounced release. Think Wii Ballance Board, DK Bongos and possibly even SNES Mouse. To me this seems the least likely scenario because the JoyCon are pretty versatile. Eg a light gun equivalent, the Joycon can do that, the fabled Vitality Sensor can be done on the right Joycon. The only things that come to mind here are microphone, touchpad and possibly some fitness style stuff (pedometer/gps, scales, grip pressure)

3. Revised JoyCon/Pro Controller. I don't think this one is out of the question. We know of the JoyCon drift issue so that's one reason to do it but also there are ways the JoyCon could be better. They do lack any kind of room tracking (think Wii Sensor Bar at the simple end, VR IR boxes at the other) so that could be something to add. I could see them doing this for BotW 2.

Whatever it is we'll hear about it before March next year. I susspect if it's something related to NSO where the new controller is a nice-to-have rather than a requirement we hear about new consoles on NSO relatively soon. We do litterally tick over 3 years of NSO today. If it's something else.... probably January

So nintendo already moved on from the nintendo switch? This doesn't totally surprise me lol~ On the plus note I found 2 games that finally give me some initiative to actually want to save for the nintendo switch~ 🤣 Already determined going to get the nintendo switch this year or next year~ 😁😂😂😂

Happy Gaming~ (^_^)

@Barbiegurl777 No, the last thing they announced hardware-wise was the OLED model of the Switch. It's literally the same specs as the base Switch with some extras. Nintendo's not done with it just yet.

@Isashihtzu Regarding influencers and professional gamers, there's a big difference between gaming and movies: gaming is interactive. Having awards for professional gamers makes sense, as they are in fact making a difference in the industry. It's basically closest to giving out awards to actors, despite them not being involved in the production side of the movie.

...Influencers less so. That's most akin to handing out awards for critics, and doesn't make much sense to me.

So nintendo already moved on from the nintendo switch?

Well they've landed on a stable architecture/form and are probably going to end up as the 3rd best selling console of all time (behind DS and PS2). They also sold 28mill units in the last financial year and will probably sell around 20-25mill units in the current financial year. So they're really isn't that much insentive to "move on" from the Switch

However, the hardware is well behind the curve and gets further behind by the day. So new hardware is on the horizon whether the commenters here like it or not. But even then, I don't think they're going to be in any rush to move on from the Switch. Most commenters on this forum are so stuck on the "traditional console cycle" that they can't see past it. They think new hardware down the line means hardware incompatible with Switch. It probably won't be.

Now I could call this inevitable new hardware in the medium term "Switch Pro" and some people here will lose their minds. But I'm used to the fact that with tech most people are completely incapable of seeing anything beyond what's immediately infront of them. Non-mechanical storage was dumb and overpriced until everything had an SSD, moving away from optical media for games was dumb untill they all became glorified download codes. Hell the idea of home console tier gaming on a portable, the reason I was all in on Wii U, was dumb untill the Switch made bank.....

And abandoning the traditional console cycle and going for more of a smartphone/PC style model was dumb..... untill Microsoft, Sony and soon Nintendo abandoned it

@skywake Except, Sony didn't abandon the console generations. People think that abandoning console generations can work, but it'll never work in the slightest. It's all PR bull to make people think that they're doing something unique, when everyone knows that without generations games would just become stagnant as a whole.

You can't make use of better tech for games without having a generation, or making games exclusive for a certain device. For example, many ps4 games don't make use of the ps5's controller capabilities at all, and a lot of games releasing on both probably won't either. I know for a fact game worlds won't function the same, with them either having a choice between using the SSD to help prop up a big seamless game world, or them making a game for a previous gen console, only for it to not take advantage of the SSD at all for the world of the game.

We shouldn't encourage them to go into a future where the games industry is just treated as the mobile one, given that eventually we'll be hitting a brick wall where no innovations could be made, in order not to sacrifice playability on older hardware, and yearly consoles that barely innovate on their own, only serving to make games run nicer or look prettier.

The abolishment of console generations will never come, and if it does, then the industry is pretty much doomed.. except fanboys will constantly buy each new yearly console, given that they're fanboys.

It's amusing because you've kinda proven my point a bit. As I said, people are wedded to this idea of console generations and can't see past it. And somehow think it's the only way to get new experiences or signficant improvements in performance. To the point where even when it has been eroded to the degree it already has by Sony/Microsoft people still think in terms of "generations".

I'd argue that Sony's marketing around the PS5 is nothing but an attempt to continue to appeal to people such as yourself. They want you to think of the PS5 as an entirely new generation of console. It's a call to upgrade. Is it better hardware? Sure. But the PS5 is closer to a PS4 than the PS4 was to the PS3, PS3 to PS2 or PS1 to the original Playstation. It just is. This is not the same console generation cycle we've been used to. That cycle is a dead concept

I'd argue the PS5 is as much a new "generation" as the PC upgrade I did in 2019 was. Is a Ryzen 5 3600X + 500GB m.2 SSD + 1660Ti significantly more capable than the i5 4590 + 120GB SATA SSD + R9 285 I built in 2014? Definitely. Was my 2014 build a significant leap above the Core2Duo I built in 2009 and was that a significant leap above the Athlon 64 I had in 2005? Sure. Were these "entirely new generations" of PCs in the same way we think of the Switch was after the Wii U or GC after the N64..... no...

You can play PS4 games natively on the PS5 with better performance than if you played them on an OG PS4. The same is true of the XBox Series which goes even further by litterally having to different SKUs with entirely different specs. I expect Nintendo's next jump in hardware will be similar, I see no reason for it not to be. And I'd argue that anyone who says otherwise is living in the past. Nintendo Switch will live longer than the X1 SoC the current Switch uses

@skywake I generally count generations when a console can do something in which another console can't do, not performance wise. The ps5 has an SSD, allowing for games to load faster and for things like bigger game worlds. The GPU allows for things like Ray-tracing, and there's much more that the ps4 can't do, that isn't just "Ps4 but upgraded".

Games like God of War Ragnarok are going to clearly suffer in terms of it's level design and gameplay capabilities because it's releasing on both the ps4 and ps5, with the ps4 holding the game back.

And tell me, if generations are gone, then won't that mean a couple years down the road, games will just stagnate in terms of progress development wise? Given that they'll have to make the game run on previous hardware, or else they'll divide the playerbase. There'll be no more exclusives between things like the switch and it's successor, given that exclusives are a thing that mark a new generation of consoles. Progress will just continued to be hindered.
