I don't know what people are talking about, we have had two Partner Directs in the last two months. You are all acting as if Just Dance 21 isn’t a big release!

@Ktld878@rockodoodle How are Nintendo defining the lifespan? Is that the lifespan before the next system launches or lifespan regardless when the next console launches? Either way, there is not going to be any true successor other than maybe a slight upgraded Switch for at least 2 or 3 years.
My guess is they will want to milk everything they can out of the Switch. So the next console will not release until 2023.....
I have thought that Nintendo might make a new console that is for TV only, but interacts with the Switch, somewhat like the Vita did with the PS4. But I think that's pretty doubtful.
Wait didnt nintendo say that the switch lifespan was about half over or something a few months ago? It just seems silly to me that nintendo will release a new console after they said that they were still going to support it. Also the switch has something going for it that no other platform does. Its portability. I think that a new model of the switch like the xbox one x is much more likely.
There's this phenomenon known as virtue-signalling, in which a person or organization says things that make them look good (especially, superior to one's peers) but don't follow it up with any tangible actions or real commitments. So far, that's what they're doing here.
@damien33ad That is a super melodramatic way of looking at things. They're still using the Direct branding so clearly they're not dead. The main ones are just on hiatus presumably because COVID probably put a dent in Nintendo's first party release schedule like a lot of other developers and publishers. The reason the third party Showcases are being prioritized is likely due to the fact Nintendo just doesn't have enough games in development that are close to release that they can lineup alongside the third party content for a major mainline Direct, considering the pandemic has probably delayed a few games that they were working on in the transition to working from home. Big Directs will be back, but they're probably isn't enough major content ready or close to release that Nintendo feels is time to show off or promote.

@Dezzy The whole franchise. That includes merchandise, spin-offs, etc. Anything that bears the name of the franchise essentially. Pokemon is estimated to be more than twice as big as Mario. If you choose to only compare games, then sure, but the point is, they make a crap ton of money, but their games still feel like they're on a budget.
Aha, yes I was only looking at games. Forgot how much merchandise is a big money maker. I should've known because I remember George Lucas saying that about Star Wars in an interview. The movies are just the way you get people's attention, then the merch is where you make the money.
@Dezzy He was the one that pioneered that mainly as back in the 70s merch wasn't a major thing so he made a deal with Fox that he keeps the merch rights for less movie money so pushed toys hard, because of that very few studios wont outright own the merch rights themselves now. Of course that wont work as well today as toys aren't sold in the same numbers as they use to.
Pokemon gets around it by selling more to the same people rather than selling the same product to more people, Gotta Catch em All. It's more the case of how they can licence it so there's a constant cartoon series, a yearly crap movie, card game etc which they are paid for rather than toys themselves.
If Nintendo hadn't stopped milking Mario hard after the rubbish 90s film I could see Mario out grossing Pokemon. Although fairplay to Pokemon to keeping it up, it had 90s fad written all over it.
The day is September 14th, the SMB 35th anniversary has passed and the only celebration on the gaming front is a sale on Mario games. Also no Direct has happened with the only 1st party news being a trailer for the next Animal Crossing update.
Meanwhile on the PS5 front, preorders went live a few days ago and sold out in 10 minutes
