@Nintoz
As much as I would love to see a new Mario game, I don't see it happening any time soon. But if they were to show one off, I would hope they would go back to their 'experimental' days. No Bowser kidnapping a ruler of a kingdom very similar to the Mushroom Kingdom or it taking place in the actual MK, new foes and big bad, new objective(s), have some new protagonists, or at the very lest give some flavor/character to the old enemy designs (like the old Paper Mario games). Have an actual story with substance tacked onto it would be a nice change of pace. Just really holding out hope they will break the mold that's been going on since the Galaxy days, and just give us something wildly new instead of them playing it safe again. However, I will say that Odyssey, Wonder, and Brothership have been good (if not mediocre) minor steps in the right direction.
@Grumblevolcano That has crossed my mind but it's worth noting that the upgrades/DLCs that are already on the expansion pack are from games that have already sold millions by the time they're put on there.
When adding something like that to the NSO+EP, they'll want to make sure it has mass appeal so people don't feel like they're missing out on a benefit or rather, feel like they have to shell out another £50 to enjoy the benefit.
I think doing that for a game that hasn't been released let alone for (as much as we hate to admit it) a pretty niche franchise, would be a strange choice.
Yes it could be a marketing move, but it would only really benefit those who are already likely to buy Metroid Prime 4.
@Nintoz I was thinking Prime 4 being the indicator of how they handle performance upgrades in the future. Not adding Prime 4 would be a hint of BotW/TotK being an exception bonus to the subscription but if they did add Prime 4, perhaps it being that most 1st party $10 upgrades are added (Pokemon being an exception because TPC says no?).
@Grumblevolcano I certainly wouldn't complain if that were the case. On paper, the Switch 2 edition of Pokémon Z-A is quite a hard sell for a paid upgrade when Scarlet and Violet got one for free amongst others.
At least you could say with Metroid Prime 4 and the two Zeldas, you get mouse controls and...the Zelda Notes app. Hardly $10 worth of additions but it is something that can be advertised with the upgrade alongside the visual enhancements.
@Nintoz tbh, if Kirby Switch 2 edition upgrade had come with NSO, I would have been tempted to get expansion pack. At the moment the 'extras' are S2 editions (with no true DLC) of games most people already played to death anyways, DLC for a past generation of mario kart, DLC for a past generation of Splatoon and old animal crossing DLC which.... I guess is nice for the few people who are just starting animal crossing.
If that part of NSO is just supposed to be a bonus, then I guess it's fine, but it's not adding much worth to the service currently.
So we're still expecting it this week right? I've been so busy following football the past few days that I haven't been paying attention to direct news lol.
@Bigmanfan the leaks haven't changed. Plus... there is always a September direct and Mario anniversary is this weekend so this week would be very likely even without any rumours.
Seeing Nintendo skip Splatoon 3 and Mario with their Nintendo Music drop makes me wonder if the Direct turns out to be just a Partner Showcase then on Saturday there's a small SMB 40th anniversary video comparable to Mar10 Day 2024 but only about non-gaming stuff like the movie and merch.
@Hapless I doubt it's just third party. They pretty much have to say something about Metroid Prime 4 now, bare minimum. They're running out of time for that if they're still set on it being a 2025 game, and if not they should announce a delay soon. I also doubt they'll let the 40th anniversary for Mario pass without announcing some kind of game. I don't think we make it to the end of September without these two announcements, and if they're saying Direct this week now is the time. I'm doubting they have three separate Directs for these two plus a third party Partner Showcase, we're probably getting two Directs at most. So I don't think this will be a Partner Showcase. It'll either be a general, a Mario 40th, or a Prime 4 Direct.
@Hapless The timing of it allegedly being on Friday, which is almost never the case for Directs, screams that it's going to have content tied to the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. on September 13th (this Saturday). It would place the presentation on that day in Japan as well. So it's definitely a general Direct, since we also need news on Nintendo's 2025 releases and what they have in store for early 2026.
@PikaPhantom This too. If it's true that the Direct is on a Friday, it's most likely going to have 40th anniversary content of some kind. Either specifically a 40th anniversary Direct or a full blown general are the most likely scenarios if this rumor is true.
@Croctopus IDK, I could see them holding off on 2026 announcements aside from previously announced games like Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi, or delays/confirmations of games like Prime 4, Age of Imprisonment, or Splatoon Raiders. Nintendo seems to be shortening marketing periods this gen and only focusing on games that are 1-3 months out as opposed from within the next 6 months or so. We might see an exception for the 3D Mario game if they want to assure us that yes, a flagship 3D Mario for Switch 2 is coming soon (something like this is usually the only time they announce games further out, when it's something to placate the fanbase when they're getting antsy). I could see this Direct focusing more on giving us more details on previously announced games as opposed to announcing a wave of new games (with the exception of whatever Mario stuff they want to announce now). I suspect for the most part we're waiting until February/March for the next wave of new game announcements.
@Bolt_Strike 3rd party support on the other hand is rather quiet after October in both a specific release date and vague release window territory. Just already announced games isn't going to fill the 3rd party gaps unless MH Stories 3 and Elliot are Early 2026 (Elden Ring and FFVII Remake could fill the November gap).
