Honestly at this point who needs Nintendo Directs? All the real head-turning announcements seem to happen outside of them

I feel this gives less media attention and excitement than a direct would. Directs are Events! This is just ... random tweets.

@FishyS Honestly? Outside of a few, I've never seen really the current lineup of Directs as "big events"(even if the games presented are pretty great).

I don't think we can discount the possibility of getting an update about Switch 2 tomorrow for the investor meeting. A full-on reveal? Most likely not, but we could potentially see a codename reveal (even if we already know it), as well as a release window. Perhaps something similar to the original NX tweet from April 2016, like 'The next generation of #Nintendo is coming October 2025! #Ounce'

That being said this is probably our last chance this year to get Switch 2 news. If a similar scenario to the one mentioned above happens, then I predict release month/codename tomorrow, March reveal, and finally an early October release (although September would also be a nice slot to fit in more games for year one)

The USA is a huge market, they're not going to announce something during a presidential election.

@Clammy Yeah I know an election is happening, but Nintendo scheduled this investors meeting for November 5th. I never said there would be a full on reveal, I said it was unlikely, and that just a codename /release window reveal would be more likely. The investor's meeting is pretty early in the day so it's not like it's at the exact time as most of the election stuff. Even if we don't get this sort of 'announcement', investors will likely be asking questions about the Switch Successor in the QnA.

The financial data is now released since Tuesday is already almost evening in Japan. There are a few interesting things:

  • They included a letter explaining they would earn less this year than predicted.
  • half year hardware sales = 4.72 million

Some half-year software sales:

  • 2.58 million EoW (This only counts one week of September since that was the end of the fiscal year)
  • 2.31 million mario Kart
  • 1.94 paper mario
  • 1.57 Luigi's mansion 2
  • 1.26 million Switch Sports
  • 1.09 ACNH
  • 3 non-Nintendo games also sold 1 million +

56% of sales were digital

Lifetime sales:

Hardware:146.04 million units
Software:1,306.10 million units

I don't think the top 10 overall best selling Switch games changed unless the order shuffled slightly:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 64.27 million

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 46.45 million

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 35.14 million

Breath of the Wild - 32.29 million

Super Mario Odyssey - 28.50 million

Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield - 26.44 million.

Pokémon Scarlet/Pokémon Violet - 25.69 million

Tears of the Kingdom - 21.04 million

Super Mario Party - 20.98 million

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 17.77 million

@FishyS idk if 56% digital is normal, but I feel like physical is more popular for Nintendo fans so this is surprising.

Also can Super Mario Bros Wonder please take NSMBU Deluxe out of the top 10? There haven't been many updates to the sales of Wonder in a while, hopefully they release the sales numbers at the next meeting.

@PikminMarioKirby Sadly the lack of Wonder update means it has sold less than a million for the first half of the fiscal year. Which means it isn't all that much higher than the 13 million and change we saw before; perhaps 14 million but probably not close to nsmbu deluxe yet. Hopefully there will be some holiday sales for it (Are there Mario Wonder hardware bundles? I forget.).

The percentage of digital versus physical sales varies a bit by quarter/what games are released but it has slowly been creeping upward on average. Nintendo seems to be pushing it a bit with the constant advertisement for eShop vouchers.

@FishyS I think there are Mario Wonder bundles, although I'm not sure what countries they are available in. Hopefully it's a big Holiday title once again, although there are so many Mario games this year it's hard for Wonder to have the spotlight.

True! You can choose between 7 2024 games with Mario characters in them. Which is kinda insane.

@Grumblevolcano Will it sell better than Legends Arceus? Perhaps if it’s advertised also for Switch 2 backwards compatibility it will sell better?

@FishyS We got Paper Mario, Princess Peach, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Party, and Mario & Luigi all this year. Even late last year had 2D Mario and Super Mario RPG. (Mario is also in Nintendo World Championships). And to think next year is Super Mario’s 40th anniversary…

Nintendo of America hasn’t posted since Sunday which is really odd. Usually they say something on Monday, right? Still nothing today so far, either.

VoidofLight

@PikminMarioKirby Probably silent due to the election. Everything they’ll post will be drowned out by American politics.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

PikminMarioKirby

@VoidofLight That’s possible, but I don’t see why they didn’t post anything on Monday since that wasn’t the day of election. I don’t think it would’ve hurt to make some random Fortnite or Brothership post. It’d make more sense why Nintendo would want to be more quiet today, although we did just have the investors meeting earlier.

MarioKirbyPikmin?

Grumblevolcano

@PikminMarioKirby I do think so because of a larger gap between mainline entries this time. In the space of 3 months with Pokemon back with Legends Arceus:

  • November 2021 - Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl released
  • January 2022 - Legends Arceus released
  • February 2022 - Scarlet/Violet announced for release in late 2022

Legends Z-A doesn't seem to have this problem so provided the game runs fine, I think it'll do better than Legends Arceus.

Grumblevolcano

PikminMarioKirby

@Grumblevolcano That’s actually a really good point! With Scarlet/Violet it didn’t really have a Holiday season to itself and being right after BDSP could’ve affected the sales as well.

If we are getting Z-A November 2025, that would give the game it’s own Holiday slot and have a few months to sell before a supposed February 2026 Gen 10 reveal and about a year before a supposed November 2026 Gen 10 release.
