@Novamii Honestly I wouldn't mind them taking the Chibi approach that Diamond and Pearl took, so long as the devs had more than a year of dev time. HD 2D would be great as well, but I don't think Gamefreak would go that route since it's very expensive.

@PikminMarioKirby Ehhh I feel like if they were going to release Gen 5 remakes this year they would've already announced them. Gamefreak doesn't just do shadow-drops. It's more than likely that Gen 5 games will come with Gen 10 in 2026 or 2027- if PLZA is 2025's November game.

@Novamii I don’t think I’ve ever played a 2D-HD game before but that would look so nice with the gen 5 sprites!

@VoidofLight I really doubt it’s happening, but it would be cool. I just don’t want them to ruin it, as they have done a poor job before when it comes to remakes.

Yeah my prediction a long time ago was that we’d get Gen 5 remakes and perhaps a related Legends game after Gen 10, since that is historically how they approach the timing of their remakes.

@PikminMarioKirby Even if they did a BDSP approach, I don't think it'll ruin the games. Unlike Diamond and Pearl, the original Gen 5 games were pretty much playable and complete on their own right. Diamond and Pearl suffered and needed Platinum to fix a good bit of the game.

@Pastellioli Splatoon’s Grand Fest could potentially be why we haven’t gotten a Direct yet (which I think ends today, could be wrong). With Echoes of Wisdom releasing the 26th, the most plausible week for a Direct this month would be this week.

Usually Nintendo announces these 1 (or occasionally 2) day(s) before it airs, so that explains why one wouldn’t have been announced yet. If we were to get a Direct, it’d likely be announced Wednesday, or earlier depending on what day the Direct would actually happen.

As for leakers, that is a good point. Typically we hear rumours about a Direct a few days before it happens, and we haven’t really heard anything. I have a few reasons why that may be the case though:

  • Pyoro isn’t really leaking anymore
  • Nintendo seems to be more secure about Directs now
  • Many ‘leakers’ actually just base what they say off of what other leakers say or based off of what the Nintendo community thinks (probably majority of Nintendo fanbase right now is expecting the Switch Successor to be revealed this week instead of a Direct), so they may be too afraid to start those rumours
  • Nate, one of the (few) more accurate leakers, claims that he won’t reveal when the Switch Successor is supposed to get announced if he finds out, so if he did hear about when a Direct is supposed to happen, he may be cautious since it’s a possibility the Switch Successor could be there

Even though I just wrote a bunch about why a Direct is possible, I could totally see there not being a Direct. Either way I think there will be some big announcement this week.

@VoidofLight I thought it was absurd that the BDSP remakes didn’t include the Platinum content, it was such a weird approach which made these games feel smaller in comparison.

I don’t think the art style would ruin it, although if I were to choose one for Black/White I’d probably prefer 2D-HD. Since we didn’t get the Platinum content in BDSP, I wonder if we’d get the B2W2 content for a potential gen 5 remake.

Hm, as the days pass I really don’t think we are getting a general Direct this month. I think by now they should have announced one or had one happen already, or they could be having one later? I dunno. Could still happen but could be something smaller like a Direct Mini, but I still am expecting them to drop NSO news on social media at random rather than saving it for a presentation like they tend to do every September. I am surprised no “leakers” have any news to share on that

Considering the September direct almost always comes out the week before Tokyo Game Show and they don't normally announce directs more than a day before, most bets would be mid-late this coming week. As for lack of rumours? If it really is partially or entirely a Switch-2 direct rather than a 'normal' direct, it could easily be pretty locked down. In particular there are a lot less possible sources of leaks if a direct doesn't have random third party or indie games which are about to be shadow-dropped.

The semi rumours which exist relate to filming and say there might be a Switch 2 related direct by mid October. So... the next few days is the 'expected' time for some type of direct or announcement, but it is hard to guess very confidently.

(Tokyo Game Show is on Sep 26th so if anything happens in September it would almost certainly be before that).

Edit This has been posted other places, but just as a reminder:

Days before Tokyo Game Show directs show up:

2016 - 14
2017 - 8
2018 - 7
2019 - 8
2020 - TGS canceled for covid
2021 - 7
2022 - 2
2023 - 7

@PikminMarioKirby I doubt we'd get Black 2 White 2 content in a Black and White remake. Black 2 and White 2 are pretty much brand new games with areas that didn't exist in the previous game. Tons of new towns and new gyms accompanied by a brand new story that takes place years after the OG games. I don't really want them to take what B2W2 had and not remake those two at all. Imo they either remake both or just the original games if they do remakes.

@PikminMarioKirby Oh yeah, I remember you were mentioning the Grand Fest also being a factor in why a Direct hasn’t happened! That makes sense and I definitely find that to be a very plausible reason. There definitely is more attention on them possibly revealing the “Switch 2” this month instead of having a Direct, so that seems to be where most attention is focused on at the moment from fans.

Nintendo wanting to try to keep their game information and details more secure (like they said in June) is probably why we have been hearing less significant Nintendo rumors and leaks because some are afraid of getting into serious trouble. While I don’t really believe in a Direct still happening, I still think there maybe could be a small, small chance of it happening since September isn’t over, but I do think there could be info for a game of some sort that they might drop instead or a type of announcement. If they don’t have a Direct this month, it’ll be a bit surprising since by Nintendo tradition, they have always held directs every year in September.

Calling it now: Switch 2 presentation akin to the Switch Presentation in January of 2017. That'll be the "Direct."

@FishyS Yeah, usually Nintendo holds directs in mid-September, but I looked at the dates they held Directs in September and I think one of them was on the 23rd of September. So while my feelings of one happening are getting more smaller gradually, there still could be a chance one could happen, but probably later nearing the end of the month since that August Partner and Indie Direct was still fairly recent, and they may not want to follow that one up super quickly. It will be interesting to see if or when they’ll announce the next Direct, probably sometime this week or maybe next week (though I’m not very confident in one happening) but they could also drop game related info instead on social media separate from the Direct. I expect them to at least have an announcement for something unrelated to a Direct.

@FishyS
Last time we heard Nintendo patented the dual screen feature again for the next Switch machine and are we ready to see the next Switch machine that will looks like 3DS + Switch based on that rumour?

No good deed

Yeah, that year the Tokyo Game Show was Sep 30th so the direct was still the typical one week before TGS.

It will be interesting to see if any of that appears. Just because there is a patent doesn't mean the Switch 2 will use it. If there is any type of second screen, I am guessing it will be a purely optional peripheral. But the patent could just as easily be Nintendo keeping its options open for later.

@FishyS I partially hope that the console just is another dual screen one outright. I know patents mean nothing though- so there's a high chance it won't be.. but one can dream.

Dual Screen gaming is still imo the peak of gaming. Being able to use inventory and look at maps without having to pause the game was a gamechanger. Let alone the other features and functions that having a second screen enabled for games. Of course third parties don't really do well with two screens- so ehhh.

If it's an 8" screen as rumoured then for the purposes of DS on NSO you would effectively have the ability to put two DS screen sized boxes on-top of each other within that screen. And outside of DS on NSO I don't see the need for it

@skywake I remember the Wii U had the option to play DS games with both on one screen, however the screen was pretty small so it was harder to do. I think it’d work pretty well on a (most likely) significantly larger screen. DS would be hard to emulate since the heavy focus on tapping the screen (and when you’re playing on TV…), however there are ways Nintendo can pull it off. I think Switch was missing out on a lot of good DS games so I’d love to see some come to Switch

I think GameCube and DS would be a great way to advertise NSO for Switch 2, both great libraries of games, and are seemingly next in line after 64/GBA. DS is very popular so that would be good advertising for the next console and it’s NSO

Today's announcement is the announcement of a MK8 Deluxe bundle.

Grumblevolcano

@PikminMarioKirby
It would be almost 2.5cm more height than the Wii U Gamepad had so I think it could work. Plus if it's 1080p you have 2.25x the vertical pixels which would make scaling easier

I think something else worth noting is the number of DS games that would even need it. When you step back and think about it a lot of DS games don't really connect both screens, they're independent. Then some are touch only so you could just rotate and play it like a tablet. And some were played in book mode

The latest rumours seems to be from a Chinese factory worker leaking details on the system and apparently provided proof of their identity as a factory worker. I dunno if there’s any truth to it but Reddit and Famiboards seem to be going wild over it.
