I want to get my 6 yr old granddaughter into gaming. She loves watching me play ACNH and is itching to have a go at the controller.
Is Yoshi's Crafted World a good one to start with? I've looked at the Paw Patrol games but the reviews aren't great. Her reading is good and I'd be there to help when needed.
@k8sMum New Super Lucky’s Tale is a perfect introductory platformer. There’s some 3d levels and some 2d levels. The basic controls are jump, spin and dig. It’s a very forgiving game with checkpoints and things like that, but it lots of fun. Probably perfect for kids just getting started.
Yoshi’s crafted world is probably a good one too, although I’ve only played the demo of it. Untitled Goose Game is great for kids, simple controls and no pressure. It also has co-op so you could play with her.
1. Pokemon - it is always good for kids and adults!
2. Educational games like Minecraft, Portal Knights, Terraria are perfect for developing creativity!
3. DooM - the young ones should learn to slay demons from an early age!
Seeing you bring it up, I would recommend Yoshi's Crafted World, actually it's fun when played together IMO. My nephew and I enjoyed playing it together when he came over one day.
I will second what @E_Gadds_Garage is also saying. New Super Lucky's Tale is really an adorable platformer, very cartoony too.
The resident Trolls superfan! Saw Trolls Band Together via early access and absolutely loved it!
@k8sMum It was around 6-7 years old that my nieces started grasping how to navigate 3D worlds. I don't know if that's early or late. Now they're 7, 10, 13 years old. They have really liked:
Mario Kart 8: The auto steering & auto accelerate are great for kids that don't have the game control skills quite yet. Mario Odyssey: I played it with them, cleared the bosses or if anything was too tough for them, but they love exploring, espeically Sand Kingdom, and the T-Rex in Cascade Kingdom. Lego City Undercover is great once the kid can navigate 3d worlds. My nieces completed the story twice. (this is possibly the best lego game.) Spot the Differences Party!https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/spot-the-differences-pa... (Avoid the other spot the difference game on eshop has a ridiculously low number of photos, 30?) Splatoon 2 might be a wild card. I already unlocked the weapons. My nieces like playing in the weapon testing room and playing turf war. It may be too early for your six year old to play turf war.
My nieces also love making Mii characters. So, MiiTopia demo might be worth checking out just for it's updated Mii maker. (I don't know if the mii maker has to be unlocked)
@k8sMum Totally go with a pokemon or mario game, there great starters, and is she loves watching you my Animal crossing she will love the cute pokemon, you can pet em and take care them and stuff.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

You only need one game to start with - Super Mario 3D World. It's cooperative (up to 4 players) and is just perfect for running around in together. It's what my daughter started on.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
The Lego games might be best. Local co-op so you can play along. Super casual. Lots of familiar licences; Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Marvel, DC, etc.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,473 games (as of July 4th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 2 games (as of June 9th, 2025)
For six year olds... I’d want to say Super Smash Bros. Ultimate despite the rating, because it doesn’t have any graphic violence, swearing or nudity, and has an absolutely insane amount of content. It’ll keep your child very engaged if so desired! But it’s a knife edge of course so it’s a lighter recommend.
More traditional games would be of course New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, but The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening isn’t too bad either. Recs I’ve seen just now are Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Easy recommends as well!
In terms of games getting first party games (games by Nintendo) is your safest bet, because the quality level in them is very high.
@Snatcher Bayonetta? I was thinking more Zero Suit Samus's eighth costume but that wouldn't count as nudity in my book. Believe me, if that was considered nudity I'd be quite grossed out by the snowflake-ness of game raters.
@TheJGG Well i'm just saying I think that would be the closest thing, only bc some of her close come off When she attacks, but I'm no snowflake, I don't have a issue with it, but just thought it was something they should know.

@Snatcher Oh it's certainly worth mentioning, so glad someone did. I don't play Smash much, so I completely forgot Bayonetta was in it XD! I had no idea she sheds clothes during attacks...
