We’re still pretty far from release, though. 3 months out.

I imagine once the demo drops in January, the final stage of the marketing hype cycle will kick into gear. We can expect more info in February and March leading up to release.

Okay, so I guess I'm alone in this opinion, but I'm still not at all impressed by what I saw for the Gunlance. My issue with the gunlance is its defense. For a weapon that has a giant shield, it has a surprising lack of defensive options: the usual evade to manual block. Meanwhile, the lance has bigger set of moves to protect itself mid attack, such as advancing guard, and of course counter, which can even be loaded into a super guard. Even the Sns and Longsword has more options for defensive offense, from what I seen in Rise. That being said, the guard point wyvern fire is a step in the right direction, but it takes some to refresh, takes a while to complete the attack, and leaves the hunter defenseless for while as well.

I don't get what the issue is for allowing the gunlance, a weapon with a big shield, to block more effectively during its combos. I'm not even asking for a counter attack here. But instead, we have what, mid air shot jumping? I guess that's cool...

Never played gunlance so I don’t really have a strong opinion one way or the other.

All I know is gunlance has its fans, and I presume each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses. Because gunlance has offensive advantages over normal Lance, it takes cuts in other areas, like defense, to compensate. You still have a shield which can still block, it just doesn’t offer as much versatility as the normal Lance. But again, that’s the price paid for wyvern Fire and all the other GL exclusive features.

That’s my take, anyways.

Here’s Rurikan’s take. Once he realized wyvern Fire now gets super armor where you don’t get interrupted, hype went through the roof

Yeah Gunlance is less offensive because the fireworks that come with it...only thing that bugs me is that it seems to have less changes in 5th generation compared to other weapons.

I think some weapons needed more changes than others due to balancing.

That said, watch the Rurikan video I posted above. There’s some pretty substantial changes.

@JaxonH
Offensive advantages?
5:25 The gentlemen here pointed out something that suggests the opposite. What he said about the Wyvern Fire can be said about some of the other major gunlance attacks. Yeah, the gunlance have a lot of moves that goes boom, but to typically set them up and land them requires somewhat specific timing that requires a lot of skill or a lot of luck.

The gunlance have shelling, but the lance has superior defense AND mobility.

The lance typically fares much better because of its defensive advantages. It can counter, guard rush, and then follow up with a pretty big move set. The charging attack the lance has racks up an insane amount of damage and even that attack can be immediately used to follow up from others. The way the lance plays is just so wonderfully smooth and consistent.

Meanwhile, you trade that for a gunlance, you lose all that to gain shelling, the wyrm stake (which admittedly looks pretty freaking good in the Rise trailer), and Wyvern Fire, which seems like a step in the right direction, but still does not solve the gunlance's major flaw. Yeah, it has a guard point, but there's also the recoil from the attack and the time it takes to charge up. It looks pretty sweet now, I won't argue that, but I was just hoping the gunlance would finally get even more defensive options instead of the janky additions like blast jump. If the gunlance does indeed have guard points to its basic attacks, I don't see why they would not show it in that trailer.

Again, lance vs gunlance. Mobility and Defense vs shelling, which isn't even viable in many cases, unless something about that changes in Rise. I'm serious. Apparently, in Gen U and back, I'm not sure about the numbers in World, you're better off just poking and ignoring shelling altogether if you want the fastest time (unless you play brave style, I think). So the main features of the gunlance are blocking, which is better off ignored if better options are available, and shelling, which is better off ignored if anything else is available. But that's besides the point. My point is this, I think the gunlance should totally have more guard point attacks. For goodness sake, even SnS haves more efficient defensive capabilities now...

Yeah its a cannon on a stick, but we also have a shield. Half of the animations of the GL move set has the shield practically protecting the hunter already.

Great new Third Fleet Podcast with Rurikan and Gaijin Hunter. Nice and lengthy, if you’re starving for discussion centered around this game.

Given how Nintendo promoted the September Partner Showcase the way they did compared to the other Partner Showcases (which was clearly solely because of MH), I think Nintendo will really hype up the January demo so like:

  • General Direct featuring MH Rise (like how the September 2019 general Direct announcement said that LM3 and Sword/Shield were present) or Monster Hunter Direct gets announced a day or two in advance
  • Large segment on MH Rise (probably middle of Direct in general Direct case)
  • Segment ends with "demo available shortly after the presentation" or "available now")

How wonderful is that if its the case?

Monster Hunter beginning to get at least a bit of the Zelda and Smash treatment with lengthy presentations.

Ugh....over 2 hours...x_X
I can't go through that...the intro was kinda funny with Gajin hijacking a channel, though. lol

Guys, lets talk about maps, though. With the Flooded Forest being redone beautifully, I can't wait to see if there's at least one more map from a previous gen that will be returning. There are a lot of maps, so my hopes are not too likely, but I would love to see the Primal Forest and Ruined Pinnacle redone. The Primal Forest, for its progression from bright, vibrant colors, to the darker ones, along with the opportunity to look at the giant skeletons real closely. Ruined Pinnacle because I love that final area, where you can see everything and is high enough in the sky to see the curvature of the globe. In its revamp version, you may even be able to see the whole map.

But, those maps are not too popular in general, so I wont hold my breath...

Also, is there anyway to block out any spoilers I type on this forum?

There is another old world map being remade.

Well, I know someone who is going to be happy about that. If that's all the slots taken for remakes, I'm kind of disappointed that they only did MH3 maps. Heaven's Mount would also been another fun one.

By the way, thanks for not telling me how to do spoilers while doing spoilers XD

@Bronze
Ya, there’s a lot of great maps to draw from. But, keep in mind, we’re going to get the Ultimate version expansion at some point, and that could add another. And, gotta save some for future games as well.

I think 3rd generation is the focus because of the connection to Portable 3rd and its Japanese style setting, and the fact that the 3rd generation is the game most fans on Nintendo have nostalgia for. Also, they seem to have the most thematic consistency. A lot of 4th Gen maps would abruptly change biome from area to area, which would be challenging in an interconnected map. And older maps from 1st and 2nd Gen were, despite thematic consistency... not as exciting. Personally, all my favorite maps are from MH3U, and the two they chose are incredible picks imo.

Though admittedly, I would have loved to see Deserted Isle. That’s the map I have the most nostalgia for. Perhaps will see it make it glorious return in the G rank expansion.

The monster leaks are basically confirmed because Capcom France messed up...everything else, I dunno. You'd think they would do the Peaks instead, though.

@JaxonH Desert Maps. Excluding Wildspire waste, I never really did like them. That being said, sandy plains is a pretty cool map compared to the other options. But I guess I'll have to wait for Heaven's Mount redone in the further future. That or Ruin Pinnacle, I will be sooo happy. It's funny how we're starting to treat the stages like Smash Bros characters now.

@Joeynator3000 There is belief that Misty Peaks maybe wont show up due to it being very similar to the Shrines map.

Well anyways, if the Plains do make it in, then yeah...I'll be happy. Hopefully the music is still catchy and awesome when remade, still kinda "eh" on Flooded Forest's theme at the moment. I'll wait till I can hear a clearer version of it.

Only other map I'll hope for from 3rd gen is the volcano.

I hope they don't overdo it on the eastern instruments for all the maps.

Mansa

JaxonH

Well, no need to hope for anything else (except in the context of the inevitable G rank expansion or future games). Seems only those 2 are being remade for Rise. The rest will be new maps. I figure we’ll get 5-6 maps. Flooded Forest, Sandy Plains, Shrine Ruins, ice map (shown in trailer with baggi), fire map (shown in trailer with spider monster), and if we’re lucky we’ll see one more.
