I never got that far in IB, only bs thing I ran into in World in general is Lunastra. I guess Behemoth too since I prefer to play alone...

I did have some close calls during my 6* Hub Urgent but that was probably due to me doing it solo with mostly Low rank gear. Aside from that it's been a pretty cruisy time so far.

I rarely fail a quest in most games until I get to the G-Rank stuff, but yeah World was...it just felt too easy...even Nergigante.

Here, Aknosom gave me some trouble even though I never fainted, it was the same with Magnamalo. I'd imagine I'll have even more trouble with Aknosom with the hub version.

Oh yeah, Tobi, for some reason I had more trouble with him in this game, where he was cakewalk in World.

Is there a reason to hire more "buddies" in this game? My cat and dog seem to be pulling their weight just fine. Although I do think I remember reading something about them fetching materials while I'm doing other stuff. Hmmm.

Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm so incredibly happy I haven't had to carry a stupid egg once in this game. Thank you, Capcom. It has been almost pure action every time I play. I don't play a game called Monster Hunter so that I can slowly squat walk with a gigantic egg and fear for my sanity any time some tiny enemy takes an interest in me.

My power went out. Entire city block lost power for like 4 hours. It’s times like these I realize just how valuable the Nintendo Switch is. Had I been playing Monster Hunter on any other console, I’d be SOL. But seeing as MH Rise is a Switch game, I just undocked the system, set auto brightness on so it didn’t feel like I was staring into the sun in the pitch black darkness, and kept on going.

@Ralizah
Egg quests are part of MH culture. Every game should have at least one per rank. However, they should never be key quests. And that’s another thing I like about Rise. Not only does the game specify which quests are key for progression, it actually gives you half a dozen and lets you choose any combination of 4 out of 6, or whatever. Meaning, if there’s ever a particular key quest that you don’t want to do for whatever reason, you can always skip it and opt to do a different one instead. Oh how far we’ve come from the days of MHGU requiring the MHGU DB Android app just to figure out which quests to do.

@Ralizah Cats have different types, like Fight, Gather, Support, etc. No idea about the doggos...different skills, I guess?

@Ralizah You'll want at least a few more so you can send them on Buddy quests and to farm things via the Argosy. For the Argosy, the higher level they are, the more items per quest they'll farm, so there's some incentive to level them up via the buddy dojo.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Meowcenaries for getting materials while questing
Argosy for farming while questing
Dojo can keep them leveled up despite not using them

And some people just like collecting them and leveling up different types such as what Joey mentioned. That way you have a fighter, a gatherer, a support type, a pyro maniac bombardier (their tag line is something like, “I love blowing things up”). It just provides more options for out in the field.

@JaxonH Is it still called Meowcenaries even though we have Palamutes too now? Huh.

I didn't have the game in front of me so that was all just off of memory.

So I enjoyed the demo I played of this game enough that I decided to make this the first Monster Hunter I really give a legit chance. I bought the Deluxe Edition and all the DLC on day one so I'm all in. Reason I'm posting here, I have such little experience (only played a bit of Tri and World, admittedly probably didn't give either the chances they deserved) with the series so I'm just looking for a bit of advice. I'm starting off with a light bowgun because I enjoy more ranged weapons in games if I can use them but any suggestions for something better is welcome.

Also, I tend to just stick to single player. Will it be possible to get through the whole single player without doing Hub quests or do I have to do both to get the full 'campaign' experience?

@Gamer83

Hub quests scale to how many players are in in the lobby, so they can be done solo - but will be harder to do that Village quests.

MHR was also the first Switch game I decided to play online with, and it is very fun.

Thanks. I play a little bit online with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 but generally it's not really for me. Maybe if a couple of my friends or co-workers get the game I'll try and team up with them but otherwise don't see myself playing the Hub quests unless it's required to get through the single player to some degree.

@Gamer83
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

I first tried MH on the Wii U with MH3U, and quit playing after an hour. Just seemed to be a lot of text and no action, and I didn't know what I was doing. But I had a coworker, a big Xbox gamer, and he started telling me he was going to buy a Wui U to play MH3U. He offered to hunt with me online, and that first hunt against a Royal Ludroth was all it took. 600 hours and numerous 48 hour binges later, I was a diehard fan for life.

The thing is, MH is a very complex game. But not nearly as obtuse to get into as it used to be. World did wonders for modernizing the series, and Rise takes it even further. It was always fantastic but it required a lot of patience to get into. Now, you can pretty much just play the game and learn as you go. You don't need to understand everything at once.

That said, a few starter tips. You'll start with a Longsword equipped, but there are 14 weapon types, and each is like choosing a different fighter in a fighting game. They're all completely different and make the game feel completely different to play. Try them all out. You're given one of each in your item box. Go to training room and see which one gels with you best, then practice the combos until you get fluent with the weapon. Hunters Notes has some, or you can watch a YT tutorial.

Then practice the wirebugs. I can't stress this enough. They're crucial to so many aspects of the game, be it traversal, attacking, evading and recovering, etc.

Weapon Sheathed

  • ZL+X for wiredash 45 degrees upward in direction character is facing or tilt of the analog
  • ZL+A for wiredash across in direction character is facing or tilt of the analog
  • ZL+ZR for wiredash in direction of manual aiming cursor regardless of direction character is facing
    Weapon Drawn*
  • ZL+X for silkbind attack #1
  • ZL+A for silkbind attack #2
  • ZL+B for wirefall recovery during knock down animation when hit, in direction you tilt the analog

Crafting is important, can be done from the item box and you can enable auto crafting for out in the field when gathering. But to start, you'll want mega potions, antidotes, and well done steaks which come from raw meat. You can trade for raw meat with Kamura points from Rondine at the Argosy, then have canteen cook them into well done steak for you. Beats the old days of having to carve meat from small monsters and cook one by one with your BBQ Spit in the field.

Also, eat a meal before every hunt. No exceptions. It's a must. It increases your health and stamina for that hunt and can give you extra skills.

I'm usually a solo player but Monster Hunter is an exception. This is a game that's super fun with friends or people here. If you want to hunt online just let me know. I'm home by 4pm central each day and have Fri-Sun off this weekend.

Thanks for all that information. I've noticed this game has been a bit easier to get into than previous games in the series and I'm starting to really like using the light bowgun, I've always been a fan of ranged weapons if there's a choice in any game I play.

Part of the reason I'm not online is a work a night job and don't really know what my schedule will be from day to day and when I'm home prefer to play games at my own pace. Maybe after I complete the single player missions I'll tackle the hub stuff with you and some people here. By then I should at least be semi-decent at the game too. Right now, getting better but still learning. Really liking what I've played, however, I can see why people have raved about this series. The gameplay loop is addicting.

The hunting horn made from Khezu parts is horrifying. I love it.

@Joeynator3000 @TeeJay @JaxonH OK, so I'll look into hiring buddies for collecting materials for me while I'm on hunts. Thanks!

Right on. Alot of new players start ranged, but once you learn the game, later you'll get a thirst for that sweet, sweet melee combat with a complex weapon like Switch Axe or Charge Blade. Personally, I recommend Hunting Horn as they revamped it with a whole new move set this game and it rocks.

One thing to keep in mind, is if you're gunning, then ZL is not your wirebug button by default (unless you change it in settings). Because ZL is used to aim, they map R to be your wirebug button. This kind of presents a problem because wiredashing in direction of your cursor requires ZR, and pressing R+ZR is not viable. It's not essential since you can use ZL+X and ZL+A (or for gunning, R+X and R+A) to cover 95% of your needed traversal moves. But it's worth noting.

Also, I recommend Gyro aiming. It makes gunning so much more viable and fun, imo. In the gyroscope menu, set everything to ON except for Normal Gyro (Camera controls) which should be OFF. If playing handheld, just bear in mind they didn't switch roll and yaw axis for left/right aiming so you tilt like a steering wheel for left right instead of tilting sides of handheld toward or away (it only needs super tiny movements so it's not a big deal, but it's worth knowing the GyroTV is best designed for a controller on the tv.

The multiplayer is so much fun, it's a little bit more hectic than World (probably because of the smaller screen and you have the dogs jumping around as well) and feels a lot more arcady. It's probably because it's LR but there seems to be less incentive to target different body parts with specific weapons because when everyone piles in the tail gets cut and head smashed anyway. It also doesn't help with people flying around on wirebugs doing dive stabs and the big green flurry things but it's definitely fun.

I do wish the game wasn't split between on and offline though as I'm not progressing the story at all and have little inclination to play solo. Hopefully I will still get to see everything via the hub lobby.

Lastly, the bin files are now floating around for all 3 amiibo for those who were unable (or unwilling) to pick them up, and the layered armour looks awesome.

Finished soloing my way through High rank Hub. The gameplay's a lot of fun mechanically but I can't help but feel pretty disappointed by how incomplete the game seems to be at the moment.
