Ok, this game was seriously worth the purchase just for the soundtrack! I didn't even fight any monsters, I just wandered the town all night taking in the music and environment. And the short quest. I hate video game battle music. Except if it's kodo. Kodo is the only valid battle music I can get into a fighting stance with. It's really excitingn

So much personality, amazing music.... The twins are....a bit...... much. The English va sucks...I need to change that but can't without exiting. Plus the theme kind of demands Japanese. The qol features feel a lot better in the real game than the demo. I want bunny dongo. I don't know what it is. I don't think I want to know what it is. But I wants it.

I have this feeling that this will be my personal favorite mh for a long time. It's everything world wasn't with most of the good things that world was. The town alone... No comparison.

I'll still play only up to the 4 star quests probably because I suck. But I'm going to play ALL the weapons, darn it. This time even great sword is feeling ok on small monsters. Will see how it goes for the nasties like mizu. Didn't work in the demo for me. Forget high rank quests. I buy it to hunt GJ with every single weapon as fast as I can.

Dual blades are feeling quite fun too.

Best mh yet so far! It was a side game for me. Must not let it consume me. Must finish fenyx and ffxv and yakuza 7. I still need to finish tcs 1 and 2. Switch finally has a reason to be used this year!

@Ralizah which is double weird since it's also a pc release. Who tries to delegitimize master race?? Then it will be on game pass pc and the trolls will claim mh is just going mobile. Given it's on pc and Nintendo that means it's really only the Sony ponies griping.

Edit:. Also, to me the game looks ok, maybe slightly above average at best,
handheld, but not particularly special.... But docked it looks splendid. It even has aa. Nothing on switch has aa. Looks like maybe an early x1 game which is pretty impressive for switch. Weirdly you're the one really bothered by xenoblade 2 handheld and I wasn't bothered at all so were inverse on this one.

@NEStalgia Damn. Because a lot of games have really really good osts. Like persona or bravely default. Hell, even Zelda.

Also any mh without underwater lagi is a good mh. I still have flashbacks.

@VoidofLight yep, personas always one of my top soundtrack picks! Bravely never resonated with me in general so I never actually noticed the soundtrack. Zelda runs hot and cold, but when it's great it's great. I actually bought the ss Le from scalpers just to get that soundtrack.... Imported the tms#fe soundtrack... That's really in the persona category though. MHR is great though. Obviously so much of it is battle music with booming kodos.... But that's cool...I have whole taiko albums in my non gaming music library too. I just adore the whole semi traditional japanese treatment in this game. So many small touches, from the semi water color effect of the art style, the deep theming, the music, the samurai film map introductions. This is truly mh built for japanese gamers.... Good luck to capcom topping this, ever, in japan. This will be for capcom in japan what ff7 was everywhere but japan for square. What thousand year door was for nintendo....

Alright, going to bed, spent a bit longer than expected looking at the Sandy Plains. I mean, it was my #1 favorite map ever, so...of course I was gonna take forever to see what they changed and added. lol

Only thing that bugs me is that one giant tree that you could see in the original map near Barroth's mud pool, was expecting to reach it in this game...nope, still can't get to it. lol

Perhaps it's related to that humongous jellyfish looking thing I noticed when looking off the edge of the map....right around that area, actually.

It was way off in the distance and then disappeared behind a rock. For some reason I never thought to record it.

@NEStalgia A LOT of people are bothered by XC2 in handheld mode. Because it's terrible and drops so low in resolution at times that the characters look like smears on the screen.

MHR looks good enough in either mode (strong art direction will do that), but I've found that, with a lot of the more demanding games, the small uptick in resolution you get from docking it doesn't make up for the much larger size of the image when it's on a TV. Rise just looks sharper to me on the smaller handheld screen, and especially on the Lite. Also, something like this is just inherently more impressive on a portable system vs. when it's played on a TV.

There are certainly games where the docked experience is almost unquestionably better in terms of that pop you get in image quality. Dragon Quest XI S. Mario Odyssey. Mario + Rabbids. But this isn't one of those sorts of games for me.

Well, this is the good thing about Switch being a hybrid platform. We both get to play it how we like and be happy as a result.

And yeah, the music in Rise is great.

I won't accept you dismissing Bravely music, btw. Listen to these and tell me these games don't have awesome music:

A fun series entry that enjoyed modest success in its day, but which is now championed by a cult of increasingly aging Nintendo fans as the literal greatest game of its genre ever made, and which is used to bludgeon future series entries that deviate from its design principles?

Hows everyone getting on with multiplayer?

I keep getting idiots who join the hunt, cart twice within minutes and then leave the game so im left trying to solo the thing.

This has happened pretty much every match so far, I get there are going to be people new to the series but why drop out when they cart?

Edit: another small gripe is that the battery life on the Lite is absolutely gash with this game (about 3 hours with a full charge when playing online), the only way you could play this away from home is with the charger and access to a socket or with a rucksack of battery banks.

You can go in. There's a doorway you have to blow up with a large barrel bomb. Then you can go inside.

@Ralizah @NEStalgia
The music... I just sit and listen to it in my headset in the village. I love the little drum beat that kicks in near the merchant. So snappy.

As for the TV, I'm playing MH Rise in both modes and both look good. Handheld is more impressive but it still looks gorgeous on the TV. I use an mClassic though. That certainly helps. And sitting 6 feet away from a 55" seems to be just enough to where most imperfections blend in.

@JaxonH The village music is really soothing, and it gives the place a charming ambiance.

I mostly play games on a monitor, so I'm sure that doesn't help when it comes to docked image quality, since it's close to my face. Again, game looks fine on a TV/monitor, but I'm just a lot more impressed with it in handheld mode.

I downloaded the game on my Lite. I want to see if it feels more at home there, like certain other games do (3D World, Gnosia, Tetris 99, Ni no Kuni, Smash Ultimate, etc.). The Lite SHOULD feel just like a smaller, more portable Switch, but I find I enjoy some games more on it, even when I'm at home. Its form factor and lack of a docking functionality fundamentally transforms my impression of it.

Despite their shared pool of games, the normal Switch feels like a home console with a built in screen for when you need to get away from the TV, whereas the Lite feels like a Vita/3DS successor. It's very weird.

A good beginner’s guide. We want as many new players to jump in and become diehard fans as possible. That largely depends on understanding the game properly.

@Ralizah
Can confirm. It’s a dream on the Lite. It feels like the next generation portable MH (well, it probably feels that way because it IS the next generation portable MH lol). But it gives a much more direct comparison to the 3DS entries such as MH4U. And it’s such an upgrade.

The one downside to playing on the Lite is that it doesn’t have rumble. And it turns out that yes, this game does have HD rumble. If you go fishing in one of the ponds, when the fish bite you’ll notice the HD rumble. I’m not sure how that’s handled on the Lite. But fishing is not something you do a lot and I’m sure you can still manage regardless, perhaps by just watching for your bobber to sink underneath the surface.

Is it just me or is Rise the best looking MH to date? I haven’t fired up World in awhile, but from what I remember Rise looks even better.

@SuperWeird
In terms of art style, I’d agree.

In terms of graphical fidelity, there’s no question World looks better. It’s just a consequence of basic physics and mathematical principles. Games running on hardware 10x more powerful will produce higher visual fidelity.

That said, Monster Hunter Rise impressed me visually more than World did when it released. And while World most definitely did impress me quite a bit visually, there was nothing about it that hadn’t been done before in hundreds of other AAA games. It looks gorgeous of course, and to this day I still love playing that game because of how stunning it is, but, there are countless other AAA games that look just as good, if not better. With Rise, there are very few, if any, other portable games that look better. So it makes a bigger impression as a result.

That, and the art style is the best it’s ever been.

@Ralizah
I can’t get enough of this game. Just existing in the world is entertainment enough. I love how pictures are the new collectible aspect. I’m always taking screenshots anyways so the camera is a perfect addition. You can hang pictures in your room (I have one of Elder Fugen and his Palamute hanging in the doorway, and my palico over my bed floor area, and one of me standing on top of the highest roof in Kamura overlooking the town) and it makes it feel like you really are living in Kamura, with real relationships with these people.

edit
After some testing, it seems the mClassic makes a massive difference in MH Rise. More than I’ve seen for any other game. Things look so much worse on the tv without it. Surprisingly so. I think if anyone was considering picking one up, this game would be a good reason to do so. It’s either that or my new 4k60 HDMI switcher doesn’t scale the lower res signal from Switch well. I don’t want to use the mclassic on the 4k60 HDMI switcher because it’ll cap the HDMI 2.0 for PS5 and PC. So I keep it attached to an HDMI 1.4 switcher, and this game looks twice as good running through that with mClassic out.

@JaxonH Agreed. It doesn't have that 'soft' look most subnative games on Switch have. There's a lot going on with image quality in a given title beyond resolution. But, of course, it's easy for internet bullies to take a number, abstract it from the thing it's referencing, and concern troll about it. And there's most definitely a concerted effort across gaming communities online to delegitimize this release, as seems to happen with every major Nintendo Switch release.

Dude on Gamespot is insisting that MHR has bad graphics because anything below 1080 looks "blurry". I told him to get his eyes checked, because the game doesn't look blurry at all.

Apparently GameStop is now sending emails cancelling pre-orders on the three amiibo. According to a screenshot a friend (who paid with PayPal) sent me, the email states:

Why did GameStop cancel my order?
There may have been an issue processing your payment information. Please contact your financial institution. It is also possible the item you ordered is no longer available. If you still need to make a purchase, please visit us online or in-store.

My friend placed their pre-order back in early October. They heard nothing until a week or two ago, when they received an email saying that there would be a ‘slight delay’ and their shipment would be dispatched on the 30th instead of the 26th. As of yesterday afternoon, their order was still showing as pending and ready to dispatch on the 30th. Then, late on the evening of the 26th, they received the email stating that their order had been cancelled. ETA: my friend tells me they just made a purchase yesterday using PayPal and it went through with no problem, so the issue does not seem to be with their PayPal account.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I preordered the standard game, and while GameStop charged my credit card and created a shipment order through FedEx, the parcel has yet to actually be dispatched (FedEx tracking says package is still waiting to be picked up). Strangely, the expected delivery date on the FedEx site is showing as 3/26/2021, which is obviously not correct, but it also says that shipment information will be updated once the package has been received. I expected it to take at least a week after release to get the game, but I'm thinking I should have preordered from a local store so I could have simply picked it up in person on release day.

While there’s no denying sub 1080p doesn’t look as good as 1080p, The game looks great regardless. And I think they know that. It’s just insecurity. It’s the same people who were gloating about MH World and how the franchise would “never go back to portable systems now that Capcom made all that money”, and realizing they were wrong is something they’re still trying to cope with.

Eh, resolution and framerate never really bothered me...as long as it stays put. When I played World on the PS4 both were all over the place and it drove me crazy sometimes. lol

Used to use FRAPS on my PC to keep an eye on my framerates, but I realized that I was starting to pay more attention to the digits than the game, and it was sucking the enjoyment out of it, so then I relegated FRAPS exclusively to tuning and testing and stopped worrying so much about performance so that I could simply enjoy the game I was playing.
