Plot twist: You're actually controlling Cappy in this game and he's just possessing Mario.
That really is the one obvious thing that the writers don't mention. Someone told them to put a bolded sign up that read in bolded alarm-red text: "DON'T talk about: Mario's free will."
I don't remember if this has been brought up before here or not, but you can play rock, paper, scissors with Mario. Every time he collects a new moon his raised hand will be either open, doing a peace sign, or closed into a fist. Fun little detail, I thought.

Hmmm but then Mario wouldn't go into the frog himself. The cap would just go onto the frog and you would control it, but a capless mario would remain outside.
Ok.. just “finished” the game..
What an epic game, what an epic end!!! My heart was beating like I’m 10 again.
This will be probably first and last game I’ll 100%.
I played every mario game except sunshine and 64 but this one.. man.. I just don’t know what happened to me.. is it music, is it freedom, is it Cappy... maybe all combined I don’t know, really, but this game has something special I didn’t expect.
Thank you Nintendo for bringing me to childhood again!

So everyone is talking about how the end of this game is crazy awesome and I'm sat here on the Seaside Kingdom with 295 Moons (And 51 to deposit!) like...yup...I'll believe that when I see it.
After 64 giving you...well...nothing but useless 1-ups and a sparkly Triple Jump, Sunshine's postcard, Galaxy's Luigi Mode/Little Cute Extra 100 Purple Coins and bonus 20 second cutscene, Galaxy 2's extra stage, 3D Land's extra stage and 3D World's extra stage...I am expecting to be thoroughly disappointed.

@Snaplocket The game has these things in them. They are intended to be done. If you weren't meant to do it, if the designers didn't intend for you to do it, why put it in the game hm?
And my prior post was about how the end result, no matter how fun the journey may be, is most likely disappointment.

Whewww! Just beat the Wooded Kingdom- oh my gosh, with as much gameplay as Nintendo had shown I thought there would be very little left to discover... boy was I wrong. That was the best kingdom yet!
I was like a kid in a candy store running around that world- moons everywhere haha! And some of them were hidden so incredibly well- it's like even the craziest spot you would think about looking... there would be a moon. I already had enough to leave the kingdom but I kept going and when I finally came back I had exactly 50 moons.. 50 freaking moons!
On to the next. There's still three purple coins I didn't find- I may use my Bowser amiibo to go back and look for them, since it highlights purple coins- not on the map but it highlights them in the world if you get near them.

Any Bowser amiibo. And any Peach amiibo gives you 6 life pieces, and any Mario gives you 30 seconds invincibility.
And, there are amiibo that give hints to moons and mark them on the map. Have to google which ones, they all unlock costumes as well. Heard you can also scan any normal amiibo for hints also.
I'm not gonna bother though. Just getting all the low hanging fruit- well maybe more than just the low hanging but basically everything I can find on my first thorough pass and then I'll worry about the ones I couldn't find after I'm done with the game. If I bother at all.

@JaxonH Oh does it now? Completion of the Sand Kingdom, here I come! Thanks for the info btw, knew what Mario and Peach did (that Peach Amiibo has been a life saver on so many occassions). Also any of those lovely Amiibos can show the rough location of a Power Moon.
Oh dude... lol no shame. Nooo shame. I've used that Wedding Peach amiibo on more than one occasion- best use of an amiibo I've ever had. It's just so dang convenient sometimes.

@JaxonH Yeah, plus that beeping is just annoying when you‘re down to 1 HP and you can‘t find a Heart for the life of you. And jumping down to your doom ain‘t a solution. I desperately need those ten coins (this game has really shown my greedy side, whenever I find coins in a rather risky spot, I ask myself if I am really greedy enough to get those while already walking in their direction. I regret nothing.).

I'm sure most of you guys have already noticed this, but I like how the cap throw is just the Luma spin 2.0. It's such a great way to reorient Mario midair or give him just a little more hang time.
