@Matthew010 It is looking like Nintendo's struggling to get games released at a faster than Wii U pace so the combination of Wii U ports and most of their multiplayer games getting the Splatoon treatment are to prevent Wii U esque droughts.

@AlternateButtons You should be able to switch up the characters by talking to Blue Toad in the lobby? I've heard this complaint a bit but I saw some footage changing up the characters. I think they shove those starting characters so you can just hop right in if you want.

There's plenty of videos that show actual gameplay and talk about the game. Many of them released by Nintendo.

Looks like it completely destroys all of the Wii/Wii U era Party games. Which are usually regarded as Nintendo's worst games. Regardless of the disappointing lack of Online features, it has great game modes, no car, less luck based mechanics and more cool unique mechanics. If they decide to add online playability to the boards, It could be as big as Mario Kart.

This is the first Mario party in a while that reminds me of the older, more popular titles. I'm enjoying it a lot

I thought Super Mario Party would be a must have game when I saw the game at E3, but I'm hung up on the fact the game currently only has 4 boards. I don't like how that detail was left out of some coverage for the game either as if Nintendo knew that that amount of content was a bad look for the game. I'm still interested in the title, I just need more. I would buy the game at 6 boards as long as those boards aren't behind any paywall. Ideally, given the much smaller board sizes, I would've liked 8. This game was so close to being a day one for me.

Wow. Ok...

So, I like the game, but holy cow is it brutal!!!

I played the classic Mario Party mode with the board, and picked the easy difficulty one. And I was rockin it in the mini games! 78 coins versus 13 of the next highest. But Daisy, oh my gosh. She's a merciless monster unfit for fair competition.

Star, then another star, oh here's an ally, here's ANOTHER ally, here's another star, oh you don't seem to have enough stars, you get to steal one from Peach! Let's make it 4. Warp pipes, mushrooms, shortcuts, get a star and plop the next one 8 spaces in front of her, like here have another! Which of course was no problem with 3 dice being rolled.

But I thought I might be able to score a clutch comeback with my 1 star simply because I had so many coins. Then I hit this minigame where are you had to wager coins, so I put down 20, and the minigame was to press the button when you felt the rumble.

I waited like 10 seconds and felt nothing, and I saw the message on the screen saying to press A. So finally I concluded that the minigame had not yet begun because the game was waiting for me to confirm by pressing A. So I press A.... And immediately I realize my mistake because it plunked me into 4th place. And guess who won? Daisy, of course. So she got my 20 coins and everyone else's and was soon right behind me with coins only she actually had 4 stars versus my 1.

Then I get to the next mini game and I crush it... but I quickly realize the person on my team, reaping the benefits of my beautifully skilled performance, is of course, DAISY. Smiling and giggling as she collected the coins I earned to try to gain a lead on her.

Then we get to the final round and I'm actually in a position to get to the star in my final roll. I had 2 allies that I had just gained in the last few turns (a late game stroke of luck finally in my favor). All I needed was 9 spaces to hit the star, and of course, I roll an 8.

I got completely shut down by Daisy. It was an embarrassment for the ages. And then when we get to the bonus round I thought well, at least I'll have my dignity because I have the most coins, which should put me to 2 stars... Nope. Apparently it doesn't matter who has the most coins, what matters is who collected the most coins. And do you want to know who collected the most coins? Freaking DAISY. Then the next award came up and I don't remember what it was for, because I was in a rage of fury by this point. The only thing I do remember, is that the star went to Daisy. Again.

God help me if that was the easy board for beginners

The bonus stars look to be for "Won the most minigames" and "traveled the furthest".

They are different each game. Also it seems there are 3 bonus stars if you do 20 turns and 2 if you pick anything less.

@JaxonH I feel you. I am a mario party veteran and i lost brutally as well, JUST playing on hard mode. Its like the COMs are cheating. Here's an ally phone and you rolled 12 and a hidden block and dont forget i think you will loose the game so take the golden pipe. Em what.

I played my first match on Normal, and man was it tough. At first I kept rolling nothing but 8's and 6s (was playing as Rosalina) and landing on red spaces. Thus I'd race to the star, and be unable to pay for it even though I was winning most of the mini games. After missing out on the first couple of stars that way, I started winning big in mini games, which let me buy some items. By this point Daisy already had two stars and Peach had gotten one from a random hidden block.

I finally got a bit of luck, and managed to snag three stars in a row due to them being right in my path (I was the furthest along) then using a golden pipe. Next time around the board I landed on the Lakatu space, and had enough coins to steal one of Daisy's stars. Which was almost the last bit of good luck I had the entire 20 turn match.

Everyone else kept getting more and more allies, while I couldn't get a single one. Every time it was a 2v2 mini game I got paired with Bowser, who would sabotage the both of us. Daisy ended up getting 4 stars in total (including the one I stole from her), while Peach wound up getting 4 stars and stealing one of mine. Thankfully I had managed to get a 5th star before that point. I was winning most of the mini games and had the most coins. But I just couldn't get any more stars.

Then in the final 3 turns I could have stolen a star from Peach (giving me 5 and her 4) if I'd been able to get a grand total of 10 or 12 spaces, not too terribly difficult right? Except I'd not had any items for 2/3 of the match, and kept either rolling a 1 on the normal die or +2 coins (no movement) on my character die. I ended up winning due to getting bonus stars for winning the most mini games and triggering the most Events. Daisy got the bonus star for traveling the most spaces during the game.

I had a blast, but wow is the computer ruthless.

Was the computer in the old ones actually a cheater, or did everyone just assume that anything lucky that happened to them was cheating?

Also, can you play Mario Retardy in this game? (play a board game where all 4 players are easy computers and watching them haphazardly stumble through the game)

No idea, think I'll go find out.

Looks like that's not an option, unless someone else figured out how to do it.

EDIT: On the other hand, just finished up a Partner Party run and it was definitely a hoot. Why is a collection of such stupid mini games and racing about on a board at the whims of the dice so fun

EDIT 2: I also did a 20 turn Mario Party match using the Bob-bom Mine board. And it was a blast. (sorry for the pun). The first seven turns consisted of everyone getting into the center ring (where the first star was located) with me and Boo landing on an Event space. Then the other three players kept rolling their custom die and rolling just enough to land on an Event space, a 0, or a +/- coin result. Meanwhile I got out of there fast, snagging the star on the way. And another 3 stars back to back due to them being almost right in front of me or me rolling rolling a 10 (plus ally dice) and skipping in and out of the inner ring on the same turn.

I've played two 10-turn rounds now on Normal (easiest mode available). Including the bonus stars I actually didn't have a hard time to win at all; I won both games with ~3-6 stars difference. It was still A LOT of fun though. I'm really looking forward to playing this game with friends and family. I figure if we're playing with a certain group of friends, there'll be some 'extra rules' involved shortly (e.g. drinking if you throw a 6 or higher or if you gain or lose a star). With my cousins I'll most likely play the game as intended

I picked this game up after all and it turned out to be just what I expected, fun with a friend, pointless anytime else. It's been years since I played a Mario Party so it could just be rose tinted nostalgia goggles, but are the boards in this game a bit smaller and simpler than in older titles?

Also I can't complain too much, because in 3 games I won once, my friend won once, and an AI won once, but it felt like even on very hard, the AI wasn't as difficult as I remembered too.

Still tons of fun with a friend in person, but those are my thoughts on the game.

So far my most hated map is the fruit island one. Toadette just loooooves to move like three spaces down from the person who literally just bought the star

How are the mini games after each round supposed to be divided? Is it fully random or is there supposed to be a pattern (1 vs 3, 2 vs 2 or all individual)? I noticed that on my second play through there seemed to be hardly any individual minigames.

Btw; the alternative play modes are a lot of fun too.

@toiletduck It's the same as the older Mario Party games, the space each player lands on decides the type of minigame:

  • All red or all blue: 4 player
  • 2 red and 2 blue: 2 vs. 2
  • 1 red + 3 blue or 1 blue + 3 red: 1 vs. 3
  • Green spaces randomly select a colour
