@kkslider5552000 Sonic Mania doesn't do much to update the game design of the older 2D games, though. It's not a forward-looking project. It's nostalgia porn made by and for hardcore fans of the older games, which is not where I'd like to see the series go over time.
Unfortunately, Sonic Team is the Game Freak of SEGA, so it still compares well to the half-baked projects they inevitably ship out.
What other Mario spin-offs are left? Not sure how much people care about Dr. Mario. Mario+DK, Mario+Luigi, Mario+Sonic are all dead series now. I wish we got Pikmin before Mario Maker 2.
Mario & Luigi maybe, because AlphaDream is bankrupt ( ), but what makes you say the others are dead? There was a Mario & Sonic game for the last Olympics and there's no reason they'd come out more often that that. Mario vs DK hasn't had a Switch release yet but I'll be surprised if it never comes back. And I'm not that fussed about Dr Mario but I'm sure it has its fans.
I would like to see Mario and the gangs for once time have a completely different genre.
Say, make Mario and Luigi become secret agents like Sly Cooper and have to inflitrate high security buildings with high tech gadgets and spionage skills but still have Mushroom Kingdom flavors.
As much as I love Sonic Mania, I will admit that I was a bit surprised that most of the levels were based on the ones from the Genesis games. They do at least mix things up in those levels quite a bit, so it still felt like a fresh experience in that regard. I do wish they made more original levels though. It's still WAY better than something like Sonic 4 though...at least the first episode. Never played the second, but I do hear it's a little better.
Going back on topic, yeah I'd love more of the other Nintendo franchises to make it to the Switch. Would still love a new F-Zero...though I doubt we're getting that anytime soon.

Nintendo have now employed the Alpha Dream guys directly. I would have thought they would put them to work on a new Mario & Luigi entry since they know how to make them.
@jump When did they employ the members of the team directly? I can't remember seeing anything on it, and it would've just served nintendo better to just buy out AlphaDream.

Why would it better to buy AlphaDream? They don’t have much in the way of IP so nothing to gain there, their ops management messed up hence the bankruptcy so you don’t want that and if you do buy them you’re also buying their debts but a simple assets purchase of employees contract is cheaper with the same results.
@jump Ah, I was assuming it would be better, since you'd gain their employees, but I didn't understand you can just purchase the contracts like that. However, still, I wanna know where it said that employees from AlphaDream were hired to work for Nintendo.

@VoidofLight it’s an old trick used during liquidation most famously used by WWE (then WWF) to make people think they bought WCW when really they just bought their name, a handful of wrestlers contracts and the video catalogue as they couldn’t actually afford to buy them with their debts.

That's just admitting that those games are better than most games then.
I don't always go for the nostalgia bomb, but as a one off after 25 years, this is not a real negative (outside of again, highlighting Sega's failings to make a more innovative game on the same level). And I like innovation but innovation has not lead to a better Sonic game than the Genesis games so...oh well. And no Generations is not the same type of nostalgia, quite frankly I preferred modern Sonic in that one anyway.
I wouldn’t say vast majority. Seems a tad bombastic.
It's one of the best games I've played in recent years, it has like a 92 Metacritic. The vast majority of Nintendo games, do not live up this, in my opinion, and their opinion. Like I think exactly 5 first party Switch games have a better score than Sonic Mania Plus.
Point is, don't use a highly regarded game to diss only one game company, that doesn't work how you think it works.
The itch hasn't been satisfied yet in my opinion when it comes to Mario, but I do agree the Nintendo library on the Nintendo Switch could return more IPs with new games. With Mario, there is still plenty for Nintendo to do. There has yet to be an original 2D Mario game and no new Mario Kart game on the Switch to follow up upon Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Potentially, especially given the Switch's success, there could be another original 3D Mario game to complement Super Mario Odyssey. They have not made an original, complete Mario Party, and haven't tackled Strikers or Baseball. There has yet to be a turn-based RPG from Mario on the Switch, like a new Mario & Luigi game.
Personally, I would be more than okay with Nintendo not doing any more Mario sports games because of how they've handled Aces and now Super Rush with a "complete eventually" mentality, but I think every other Mario experience would be to the Switch's benefit to have at some point.

Not that I’m disagreeing but part of the reason for that is because it’s treated like an indie which gets reviewed less than the big releases. As it’s reviewed less it gets less bad reviews from casual reviewers hence the higher score compared to say something like Super Mario Odyssey which was reviewed by hundred of journos compared to Mania’s dozens.
I'm down for a Mario+Luigi RPG. I always wanted them on the big screen.
And a new retrostyle Donkey Kong with Mario is easily a day one purchase.
If we can have more Mario/Luigi in the style of Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion 3 I don't say no.
Mario Kart 9 anyone? Mario Strikers 3?
A new Mario Boom Street / Fortune Street?
I'd even buy a port of Wii U's Paper Mario: Color Splash since I missed that one back then.
@SKTTR
I would like to see Mario Boxing / Mario Kickboxing with Mii players + ARMS characters crossover. 😆
Or something different like Secret Agent Mario + Luigi in Sly Cooper style.
