I'm really hoping for (the quite underrated tracks) Koopa cape and Toad's factory in the DLC.

I fear no man
but that thing:
The carrot minigame from bowser's inside story
it scares me

Nintendo's definitely trolling about wave 2. Their last 3 twitter posts of yesterday were:

  • MK8 Deluxe tourney
  • Car Kirby (Forgotten Land intro)
  • Switch Sports new cosmetic collection available with the post featuring "boost"

They're hinting that Kirby Car will be added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the Wave 2 update.

If I see one more update about Tour while 8 gets neglected for months at a time, I am going to blow a gasket. So fed up with that crappy phone game.

@vio At least Tour gets some semblance of new content whereas MK8D is content to regurgitate past content and block us from getting a legitimate evolution of the Mario Kart series that we desperately needed. Why are people still buying MK8D again?

Also, while the booster tracks are all older tracks (several of which could use the fresh coat of paint), I'm not sure it's fair to say it's "regurgitated content". It took them half a decade to decide to actually add more content to the game, and in the form of a fairly reasonably priced expac, with a lot of tracks on the way (and if you have the expac pass for NSO, you can just play them that way).

Waiting 5 years for a DLC expansion is not a good thing. Remember up until now we were getting new, main series entries regularly every 3 years. This is an abnormally long break for the series, after 5 years a new game is expected, not DLC. The DLC feels like something that should've been done in 2018/2019, not 2022/2023. By this point we should be getting some sort of new game.

Also, the heavy dissonance in graphic style and the similarity to Tour versions implies that they're were basically copy/pasted from Tour and given a few subtle tweaks (God knows why, it feels pointless). So regurgitated feels accurate. They're not just old from their original games, they're old from Tour too (which is also almost entirely driven by old content as well with only a handful of new courses sprinkled in, most of which pale in comparison to actual console made tracks, so... definitely feels like the series is sorely lacking in original content).

And I say all this as someone who also wants to see a new entry. Especially if the rumours about them trying to change things up and maybe have it feature far more then just Mario (plus a few guests) are true.

The Nintendo Kart idea is massively overrated, if that's the only "shakeup" we're getting, that's going to be a huge disappointment. Like yeah, we get a larger variety of characters, items, and courses, but at the end of the day every new entry gets new characters, items, and courses so that doesn't really feel that special and different. The kind of shakeup I'm expecting is more in terms of mechanics, it should actually play different. Tour, minus the gacha elements, is a great direction to take the series. It's filled with evergreen content to keep people engaged for years and years with new Tours happening periodically. The characters, karts, and gliders are unlocked by purchasing them in a shop, which makes infinitely more sense than randomly unlocking them after getting a particular coin total. R, T, and R/T variants make revisiting old courses genuinely refreshing by changing them in small but impactful ways to the point where they almost feel completely different. The character roster is by far the best in the series, and not just in terms of sheer quantity, but variety as well compared to the parade of babies and Koopas in 8/8D. Fan favorite mechanics such as special items and missions have returned. These are the kind of innovations I want to see Mario Kart 9 for (and don't get smart with me and say "Tour is 9", I mean a legitimate new mainline entry that's a full successor to 8), and it's painfully ironic that Tour is doing more to evolve the series than anything we've gotten on the Switch (Tour's courses were pretty much the last thing they needed to import into 8D) when the Switch has largely been a paradise of IPs pushing themselves in bold new directions. As for what 9 could do to not just feel like Tour: Console Edition though, there's still several things they could do. They could go for more of an open world direction like Diddy Kong Racing and/or Forza Horizons (this feels like what we should've gotten now, that would've made for a great spinoff/side series that can evolve the series without feeling like it's cannibalizing 8D), they could add a track builder mode, they could overhaul gliding and underwater to make them actually faster. There is waaay too much they could do to evolve the series for them to be resting on their laurels and recycling old tracks or buying into the "let's just throw in other Nintendo characters" gimmick which probably won't really change that much.

@Grumblevolcano Between this and the damning silence on Pokemon Scarlet/Violet now that all these leaks are out in the wild, I'm going to go insane before the month is out.

I think at this point it's almost futile to speculate on when the news will happen. Nintendo will reveal the new tracks when they feel like it

So apparently on the US eshop, the Booster Course Pass is at the top of the Featured tab. If true, perhaps wave 2 is the 2am UK time announcement.

@Grumblevolcano
Do I want to stay up until 2AM to have a miniscule chance of seeing a trailer for one of my most highly anticipated DLC's of the year? No.

Will I do it anyway? Oh **** yes.

I'm so tired with waiting, at this point I would rather them say it's canceled then keep waiting every day and being disappointed when I don't see it announced in the morning

I dont know if the top of eshop's featured page has much meaning for wave 2. Does it? Switch sports is there too. (Im looking at us eshop)

I'm so pessimistic now, I think Nintendo will drop wave 2 in late August. (Pessimism has been cultivated by nintendo's blatantly cavalier attitude toward mk8 & booster pass.) Xenoblade is creating good hype now, maybe wave 2 will fill a hype-void in august.

Edit: Can Nintendo even deliver all booster waves by the end od 2023? I see no evidence to bolster faith in their booster pass moon shot. (Pardon my hyperbolic attitude XD )

Given the NoA tweet for the leg strap update said July 26th and Nintendo UK tweet said July 27th, that update would go live around 2am. It doesn't necessarily mean MK8 news can't happen given the Mario Strikers update went live at the same time as the NSO games.

If wave 2 does release late August then all it would mean is the gap between waves are uneven @WoomyNNYes. Like how with Fighters Pass 2 you had:

  • June 2020 - Min Min
  • October 2020 - Steve
  • December 2020 - Sephiroth
  • March 2021 - Pyra/Mythra
  • June 2021 - Kazuya
  • October 2021 - Sora

Wave 3 would still release this year and it would likely be part of a September general Direct if Nintendo did one.

It looks like today's the day! There will be maintenance starting at 6 PM PST tonight and ending around 8 PM. Nintendo has also updated the DLC size on their webstore to over 2 GB which it was listed at just under 750 MB before tonight which is the size of the wave 1 DLC. Here's GameXplain's video as well.
