I think this a big disappointment. I was hoping they would be giving them the old Spyro and Crash Bandicoot trilogy treatment in terms of being built from the ground up.

Slightly touched up ports feel just a bit lackluster to me.

Several textures look updated, like Mario's details, the bubbles, and the Boo portrait, and also the hud elements.

I assume they'll do that with most of the 2D sprites used to represent 3D objects, like maybe the trees and the bob-ombs bodies. So they won't look like rough pixelated cutouts.

Being a massive Super Mario nut I decided to preorder 3D All-Stars as well. Yeah, enhanced graphics and the addition of Galaxy 2 would have been super rad, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it. Plus playing them on the go with Switch is always a plus.

@Slowdive Yep, I see the higher resolution HUD elements but what art has been replaced? And people complain about Activision LOL.

@Eel I'm quite sure that the ghost portraits and bubbles sprites are just higher resolution. Mario looks better because of the higher resolution, too.

These are 2D art assets that would not be affected by a bump in game resolution, they have been replaced with higher resolution, cleaner, versions of themselves, but they have been replaced nonetheless.

@Eel Yes, that's what I mean, same sprites but in higher resolution.

If I take a thing and replace it with a newer, prettier version of itself, that's still replacing the thing. That's what we mean by updating/replacing the textures.

I'd like to believe they still had the original assets, but chances are they had to recreate them, maybe.

Same here. I'll be complaining about this for a long time yet I just pre-ordered 😂.

@Eel Yes, I know what you mean. They included a higher resolution version of the sprites (which is what I said).

Yeah, I never buy games at full price, but I had a 10% off coupon at Best Buy expiring in a week, so I went ahead and used it on this. Combined with the facts that my son will love it because he hasn't played any of them, the only one I currently have access to is 64 actually on my N64 which is hard to get to at the moment, and I do have easy access to Galaxy 2 on my Wii U so I won't really miss that one, and it was worth taking the plunge. Plus for some reason the pin set from My Nintendo also talked me into it.

It’s been a loooooong time since I played Mario 64. About 25 years, in fact, disregarding the brief hour or so I spent with the DS version. I very much look forward to playing that game again.

And I never played Sunshine. At all. And I’ve only played the first hour of Mario Galaxy. So this is like three new Mario games for me.

I’m glad they included gyro for the pointer and shaking for the spin. That’s awesome. The touch support for gathering stars in handheld mode is also cool. Because you don’t necessarily have to grab them so you could just play without it.

@JaxonH Sunshine and Galaxy are both superb games. You're in for a treat if this is your first time with them.

I've played them both within the last four years or so, but I don't mind revisiting them on Switch.

Pumped for this! Maybe I'm easily pleased, but this is everything I wanted in a 3D collection. No gimmicks, no novelty crap, just three solid, classic games. Thank you, Nintendo.

@Slowdive I believe that as well, they have the original sprites. Note that N64 games rendered lower than SD (256×224) so they look too pixelated, not so much on N64 because it had amazing (at the time) anti-aliasing. The textures are still blurry, though.

The original game uses low resolution versions of the assets, it's not just tied to the resolution the N64 outputs, what we mean is that, like, literally, the eyes of Mario look pixelated in the original because the image they use is a small pixelated sprite.

I'm not sure why did they leave the environment textures like that, but part of me thinks improving those would kinda cheapen the look of the game... Like... Sometimes when textures look too clean for their models, they go into the uncanny valley.

@Eel Yes and that's what we all are saying. On top of that, the native resolution affects everything that you see in the original version of the game.

@BlueOcean Oh my bad then, the way you said things made me think you were under the impression the N64 used the exact same assets as this port, but they just looked pixelated "because resolution".

@Slowdive Grezzo did an excellent job with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask so yep, I think that they should have handled this. The upgrades were subtled but just made everything look better. Although some people prefer the gloomier look of the original versions, Super Mario 64 is a sunny happy game so Grezzo would have nailed it.

I mean, yes, they used a higher-resolution version of the sprites in this port. Besides, N64 games rendered lower than SD (256×224) so they look too pixelated, not so much because N64 has anti-aliasing. Nintendo 64 games looked a bit blurry but not awfully pixelated like PS games. That low resolution affects everything but of course sprites were also low-res and not just the sprites but the textures. Unfortunately, textures still look blurry but yes, 2D elements (sprites) look alright. I also noticed that the frame rate is much better.

My thoughts exactly. XD

I'll be getting this. It's been a bit since I've played both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, and I've never played Super Mario Sunshine at all.

I am baffled why it's a limited release though. I'd think something like this would enjoy evergreen sales for far longer than six months. I'm trying to decide whether I should pre-order or if I should take my chances with Walmart come launch day.

@Tyranexx Some people believe that Nintendo will release the games separately after this or that they will be part of future Virtual Console/Nintendo Switch Online. The most annoying thing is the lack of Super Mario Galaxy 2, wt...?
