I'll be getting this. It's been a bit since I've played both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, and I've never played Super Mario Sunshine at all.
I am baffled why it's a limited release though. I'd think something like this would enjoy evergreen sales for far longer than six months. I'm trying to decide whether I should pre-order or if I should take my chances with Walmart come launch day.
Lol. People forget 10 years ago Super Mario All Stars Wii was also announced as a “limited release” yet in 2016 it came back as a player’s choice title. Those copies are also easy to find online for a decent price. I suspect the same will apply to this anniversary collection as well.
@BlueOcean Maybe Nintendo will say something about that before the game gets delisted. Who knows. I do know they reissued Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii under the Nintendo Selects branding, just without the CD and history booklet. Maybe they're going a similar route with 3D All-Stars? It would be cool if they would rerelease them as three separate games on the eShop so people could at least have access to them.

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World
AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️
@BlueOcean I've seen some rumblings about that. Separate releases would suit me better to be honest, but as that's not confirmed (yet) I'm gonna have to plan accordingly. XD
I agree that the absence of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is odd. Maybe it'll be introduced in some big DLC update? I honestly prefer the first SMG over it, but both are superb games.
Currently playing: Pokemon Scarlet DLC, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)
I would definitely go for just Sunshine if separate releases were a thing... But eh, I'd rather just get it now instead of waiting until next year to find out if that's their master plan... Because I'm an adult with adult priorities and self-control, of course.
I'm just going to wait, Nintendo isn't going to pull this collection without having some master plan to get more money from its fans. If Nintendo does take down this collection without any reason, I'll bring out my Wii and buy a copy of Galaxy 1&2(still have my Sunshine copy) from eBay and call it a day.
Not going to play this little game Nintendo is playing.
The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
Some Swedish retailers have put this up for pre-order, so hopefully I'll get a copy.
I understand that some are not satisfied with what's included in this package and the bare minimum effort put into it, but I'm more than happy. I never owned a Gamecube or a Wii, so haven't played either Sunshine or Galaxy. And it has been ages since I've played SM64, and seeing as I no longer have my childhood N64, this is an affordable way for me to finally play this masterpiece again, as well as two Mario games that are new to me.
Can't understand why it's only available at a limited time though especially in digital format, but might be they want to sell them separately later on, which would be a bit greedy.
@JaxonH if I'm not mistaken you do need to collect stars to unlock certain levels. Maybe even to defeat a few enemies or bosses, but of that I'm not sure?
@Eel ...and adult money I presume 💰 makes the lack of self control a bit less painful.
I cant see them adding Galaxy 2 as DLC for a game that is only on sale for a few months, I also don't see them releasing Galaxy 2 as a remaster in Jan as I would have thought it would have been announced in the Direct as well.
@status-204 I noticed that the Super Mario 64 port has a smoother frame rate than the original even watching the video on my phone.
Especially in the economic climate of 2020; I'm not spending money without thinking deep and hard about it out this year and the next, and I suspect Nintendo knows there's many with this mindset, and hence they create this fake scarcity with the limited time release. Which if that is the case, is absolutely scummy behavior.
It would be, indeed.
@MarioLover92@Tyranexx@MsJubilee@Quarth I'm totally sure that Nintendo is planning something related to Super Mario Galaxy 2. The video above suggests several things including a full remaster but I think that Nintendo will release Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 separately some time after March 2021. Still, it's stupid and annoying that the collection ignores the last game because it is incomplete.
EDIT: The errata that MarioLover92 found. Thanks, buddy.
@StuTwo Actually you could use FLUDD in those if you go back after beating them.
I didn’t realise that (it’s been a long time!).
If it’s just a vanilla emulated version of Sunshine then 😕. To paraphrase Obama: you can put lipstick on Mario Sunshine but it’s still Mario Sunshine.
Expect a lot of threads a few weeks from now full of confused people who’ve been told for years how amazing Sunshine is only to find a complete mess of a game. It’s definitely a game that’s benefited from being out of rotation so a handful of die hard fans can extol it’s greatness without much comeback.
Mario 64 looks much better than the dark gritty reboot they gave us on Wii U virtual console. It’s a critical landmark game that should always be available and benefits from the fact that the best levels are early on. The camera was best in class in 1997 but that’s faint praise!
Notwithstanding the fact that the removal of the Wiimote pointer will have a slight negative impact (& that the sequel was much better), Galaxy is still a phenomenal game. I’m looking forwards to playing that one again.
I do wonder if the “vaulting” concept might actually turn out to be a great blessing. It solves some issues about having too many Mario and Zelda games on release at the same time (cannibalising sales of new games in those series) and makes it easier to see Nintendo giving us more of those past games on Switch.
Ok so they've said the pointer will be on the touchscreen instead. But have they said what the wiimote shake (the spin attack) will become in the new control scheme? Maybe the right trigger button or something?
@BlueOcean 😂 everyone is entitled to their opinion! I hope you enjoy having the game available again. I am genuinely happy for the people who really love the game and it does have some redeeming features...
...I just personally don’t rate it that highly and I’m disappointed because a Wind Waker HD style nip and tuck to take the edges off (blue coins, pachinko machine, “you missed a tiny bit of paint on the beach - start again”, “oh you fell off the wires at the top. It’s ok - you’ll be back up here again in 10 minutes”) would have been something truly exciting whereas I’m not sure if I’ll play it as is (I do still have my GC copy).
If we do the maths and remember that Super Mario 64 goes for the price of 9,99 since Wii's Virtual Console release in 2006, and Super Mario Galaxy goes for the price of 19,99 since its re-release on the Wii U eShop, then I reckon a Gamecube title is about 14,99.
With this in mind the three games on offer have a money value of 44,97 and not 59,99. Either they have Super Mario Galaxy 2 hidden on the collection, or they try to squeeze us dry.
@StuTwo I agree, some QoL improvements would have been welcome. Also, some way to track the blue coins down, I had to watch YouTube for 100% completion and it doesn't feel ideal. I am quite disappointed with the collection but I pre-ordered. Can't the richest people in Japan make a decent collection of their flagship games? Where is Super Mario Galaxy 2? Super Mario 64 should have been remade. At least, this is the first re-release of Super Mario Sunshine ever and it's wide-screen for the first time. I think that Sunshine is the highlight, Super Mario 64 is available on many consoles (I removed the dark filter in the Wii U version) and Super Mario Galaxy is available on Wii and Wii U and it's more recent. Overall, a very poor effort.
This is the tutorial for removing the Wii U dark filter, for those interested.
