Played 64 for about an hour tonight and made some decent progress. Completed the Vanish Cap course (with it's Red Coin Star), got all six of Lethal Lava Land's Stars (not it's 100 coin Star though), and got a freebie Star from a Toad.
Lethal Lava Land was definitely training you for the tougher platforming levels ahead (it had tougher platforming challenges than what's come before, but while falling into lava is damaging, it's not as harsh as a bottomless pit). Dealing with Bullies became a lot easier once I realized jumping on them was safe (wouldn't assume so based on their horns), and I was cutting it close on the Log Roll Star (I had two health points left when I made it to the log, but managed it without falling off. The volcano Stars took quite a few tries, but were nothing frustrating.

I'm jealous of you people playing Galaxy for the first time. It was probably the best game on the Wii, and one of Nintendo's best games overall.
@Apportal That's the plan. At least for 64 and Galaxy. I'm not sure if I'm willing to put myself through the secret levels in Sunshine again. We'll see.

It won't be my first time playing it as such, but it may as well be. Played it very little when I bought it not long after launch in 2007 and the controls put me off, and I never came back to it. The terrible controls are about all I remember of the game, it's that long ago now. Excited to be jumping into it this weekend!
Something I've realized is how "off brand" SM64 feels in places. "!" Blocks instead of "?" Blocks, breakable blocks have a completely different design compared to the brick style elsewhere in the series, and (so far) no series standard items like Fire Flowers or Super Mushrooms.
Not that it really bothers me, I've actually gotten more into it than I thought I would, just interesting to note.

@RR529 I think that's just because of the translation to 3D. They probably didn't even think of carrying some of the overall aesthetic over to SM64. But generally, yes, it feels a lot of textures are pulled from a stock image website.
The FLUDDless levels are both brilliantly frustrating/satisfying but playing then I've noticed at the start it's explained that fake Mario steals the FLUDD but it's never explained how he gets it back.
Started playing Super Mario Galaxy. Out of curiosity I tried playing it with the pro controller. The normal controls work perfectly fine, but I don't like aiming the star pointer with it - it just feels a bit too bulky for that task. I mean it all works, it's just not the ideal way to play SMG, IMO. I went ahead and used the joy-cons and man, does it feel MUCH better. I can aim the pointer more easily now and I no longer have to point directly at the screen, like on the Wii.
