I love sequence breaking Sunshine. Too bad there's so few instances of it and none of them are intended (although I do appreciate why they did that, they seem to want to use the episodic format to tell an overarching story in each area, something they perfected with Galaxy and Odyssey).
I find it odd that in Galaxy, Motion Controls are optional, but for the manta ray/rolling ball levels, you still have to use motion controls. Why couldn't I just move it as I move Mario? Even so, I feel the controls are much more effective and responsive than the Wii version.
@Apportal I think those levels would be trivially easy if you had direct control.
There are definitely compromises with Galaxy. Personally I think they’re fine. I’m just about glad the waggle is gone in favour of a button and I think swiping the screen or moving the pro controller both work ok - even if neither feels quite as natural as the Wii mote did.
The vestigial interface moments when you have to move the pointer over your selected option (with no option to select using the d pad and a button) are a bit odd but minor.
In general it gives me confidence that there are plenty of other Wii games that could successfully and naturally transition in a similar way. Galaxy 2, DKCR, Punch Out etc.
@StuTwo that’s true. I guess most of the challenge in the courses was using the motion controls. I always thought of them as tutorial stages for using the motion controls tho, so since you don’t have to use them anymore I found it useless.
Like I said in my post too they’re much more responsive then the Wii version, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
@NintendoByNature Well, it's supposed to be the inside of a clock, I believe. Mario must shrink or something when he enters it. It's maddening. Depending on where the hands are located when you enter, things either don't move, move fast, or move erratically.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
@Ralizah Christ, I forgot about that world. Not exactly excited playing it, not Rainbow Ride or Wet-Dry World. Those are definitely the cruelest worlds in the game.
@Ralizah then I must've entered at the right time bc I didn't have too much trouble with it. It was hard but not as hard as the flying carpet level. I got 4 or 5 stars in the clock and went straight up to bowser afterwards since I reached 70.
I haven't played Sunshine in like 12 years probably and never beat it because I'm was a dumb kid but damn I'm really loving this game. Probably the worst 3D Mario game but it's still so fun.

I mean the rest are effectively perfect so this one coming up short means it's still fantastic. I can only imagine what it could have been if they didn't have to rush it out.

The swimming in Super Mario 64 (and any 3D platformer of the era like Banjo Kazooie) is one of the most frustrating and enraging aspects of the game. Feel like there's little control and not even remotely any precision.
I can't believe I was actually scared of Big Boo's Haunt in 64 as a kid. Got all 7 of it's Stars tonight, and truth be told it may have been the easiest world yet (I honestly had the hardest time just finding my way to the balcony for the 5th mission. I probably ran through the mansion 5 times before noticing the platform you have to get up on to get to the attic, lol, and don't get me started on climbing the roof to claim that Star, as I fell off another 5 times trying to actually get the Star, lol 😂).
Up to 46 Stars now.

@Tendo64 I'm not bothered by the swimming nearly as much as the Wing Cap. It is so ridiculously hard to control because Mario just does not want to stay straight. Doubly so if you're suffering from Joycon drift. Compared to that, swimming is as straight as an arrow.
Swimming is honestly one of the few things I haven't felt much irritation about in this game. I mean, it's slow and clunky, but that's how swimming is in most games. Aside from the eel mission, there isn't a lot to do here that involves precision movement in the water.
@1UP_MARIO I refuse to believe a human achieved that kind of performance in this game. That video was just ridiculous.
It's cool that you can get shines in a rather random order in Sunshine despite the overall goal being very linear (complete episode 7 of each area). I managed to get Yoshi and all the FLUDD nozzles without visiting Ricco Harbor and Gelato Beach at all, also the first Petey Piranha battle in Bianco Hills was my 30th shine.
@Ralizah 64 is a old game. It’s really fun once you mastered the controls. It’s like I can almost guarantee you would love the controls more if you were to play on actual n64 controller.
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
The controls are really fun. I remember being a bit disappointed with Galaxys restrictive movement. I like both games a lot though. I now have 103 stars and beat the game, I’ll return later to 100% it. Now, on to Sunshine!
