With mario 64 i get the feeling you just had to be there. If you have no nostalgia for the game on it's original release then yeah you're not gonna be that impressed. It was the first 3D game i ever played and little me was like no way! I couldn't believe what i was seeing! I remember playing it for the first time at a blockbuster video (if you know what that is) and i was confused when i tried pressing the D pad and nothing happened. I thought the controller was broken. Wasn't used to analog sticks yet LOL!

People expect too much from the camera in 64 lol. You have to let it do it's thing and work around it.(lakitu, the camera man, is doing the best job he can!) I'm enjoying replaying the game, I can't believe how many stars I missed playing this as a kid. So half of the game is still newish to me.

A few simple tweaks would have been better than nothing. The camera definitely needed work. I found myself constantly switching camera styles with the R button while walking across thin platforms and such. Falling to my death off cliffs or edges was a frequent issue. I also dreaded doing long jumps but In several parts i think it's your only option. Oh btw does anyone else think it's weird that mario needs air while underwater in the 3D games but not 2D? What's up with that?

After checking out all the games in Super Mario 3D All stars for the first time (except for an extremely limited time with Galaxy with the Wii), I can safely say Super Mario Odyssey is by far the best 3D Mario game ever made and I don't understand the hype around Super Mario 64 at all (this game would have felt dated to me when it was released in 1996). Don't get me wrong, Odyssey is an amazing game. I just don't think the other 3D Mario games are very good so far. I do love all of the 2D Mario games, but my physical copy of Super Mario 3D All Stars will soon be up for sale.
Got a refund from Amazon of £5 for my preorder. I had read the NL article about them dropping the price after the preorder release and then putting the price back up. Guessing they didn’t want the bad press.
Oddly enough I can’t find the article on the site any more....
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
So for those of us who didn't pre order or run out the first day to buy it how is availability? Were stores well stocked? I'm planning on attempting to get a copy later today. I heard it's a limited run.
I like playing this game in all but other players having to wait to get there copies is bumming be out know that could have been me. (If so I would have died)
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

Playing this game is definitely giving me that sense of Mario magic that it's intended to give, but the experience just doesn't feel as polished as it should. The lack of widescreen in Mario 64 is glaring, and the 3-second intro rubs me the wrong way. They could have done so much more with this and made it an absolute essential, like allowing digital purchases after the limited run, ADDING GALAXY 2 TO COMPLETE THE COLLECTION, and refining the menus/title screen and intro to truly do these games justice.
Giving the games here a solid 9/10, but the overall presentation is a 6/10.
Does anyone else feel like Mario galaxy was just a way bigger deal than odyssey? For one it was the first mario with a fully orchestrated soundtrack. The space theme was awesome and the whole game had this extremely Epic feel to it! Maybe I'm just being nostalgic but that game had me in awe from start to finish! I remember i was in my late 20's when it came out and some guy working at walmart was teasing me for wanting to buy a mario game. I was like whatever dude go play call of duty if it makes you feel like a man.
I go back and fourth between which is my all time favorite mario. Galaxy was a pretty tough act to follow and the fact that galaxy 2 isn't on this collection really hurts. Still hoping for some kind of rerelease of that one or better yet Galaxy 3!
@psychoBrew the year before Super Mario 64 came out the below video was what 3D platformers were. Super Mario 64 was the complete opposite of dated when it was released.
@jump
LOL no kidding. That guy couldn't have felt it was dated in 1996. You want to talk dated in 1996 play a PS1 platformer from that time. Tomb raider anyone? Barf!

I have a serious question - did the revised Japanese edition of Mario 64 with rumble centre the text dialogue boxes or is that a 3D all stars thing?
I actually think the game makes me feel more nostalgic for the n64 than I thought it would. I thought it’d feel very lazy and half baked (which it still is) but it IS a better effort than just dumping a ROM in an emulator. The c button mapping to the stick is better than I’d expected. I wouldn’t turn down other n64 games given a similar treatment.
The controls in all three games do feel a little odd to me. Mostly because they were all built around “A=OK” but in all these games “B” is the jump button (even if “B” can also jump).
I’d forgotten how little I enjoy using FLUUD to spray. A platoon style gyro spraying would have been good.
Well, I ended up getting my copy of 3D All-Stars in the mail! Decided to start with Mario 64 so that I can get it over with.
Got 12 stars so far, and I still really, really dislike every aspect of this game. I've never experienced so little joy and so much aggravation playing a Nintendo game before.
I've never managed to finish it, but I'm going to this time. I'm going to collect all the stars. And then I'm never playing it again.
Lol that's pretty much my reaction too. I totally understand why people thought it was incredible in 1996, but I don't understand why so many people still think it is today.
The only part of it that's aged well is the level design. The rest of it's a mess.
@jump it’s also worth noting that some of the games released in 1995 were already being influenced by Mario 64 - the game was extensively previewed and took a long time to arrive.
I think it might be the single biggest leap forward in video game history and I can’t think of anything else that arrived so fully formed as a great game.
...the later levels are much weaker though and the camera is still poor. Still enjoying it more on Switch than I did on Wii U though.
