I loved the blue coins and always hoped they'd bring them back.

They are like more bang for the buck.

Super Mario 64 has just 120 collectibles, the 120 Stars, but Super Mario Sunshine has 240 blue coins alone, that can be exchanged to 24 Stars (Shine Sprites), and you still have 96 regular ones. All in all Sunshine had 336 collectibles that greatly enhanced longevity by making the player explore the world for secrets and extra challenges.

Plus, the game autosaves after each blue coin, AND there is a blue coin counter somewhere in the game that greatly reduces blind stumbling.

It took some time for me to find the very last ones, but I did find them all back in 2002 without a guide or the launch of youtube 3 years later.

I never thought of the blue coins being a bad thing, I'm totally opposite on that. The more goals in a Mario game the better.

Anyway, while Super Mario All-Stars (the SNES one) was not limited, all further ports were. The Wii version was limited and only on disc. It never appeared as a VC title. And now it's on NSO which is limited by subscription. I guess that's the way that all All-Stars games will be handled. Nintendo doesn't want these Mario collections to be regular games. They seemingly want to release them only at anniversaries.

And yeah, I preordered 3D All-Stars couple days ago. I just love these games too much and I don't see them getting a discount at some point at all. Better now than never.

I’m excited mainly to see how better Sunshine will be. Better graphics and hopefully better controls.

What exactly is the end-game content in Galaxy? I never did anything beyond the final boss. But don't you have to redo all of the stars with a harder version or something?

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Octane

@Dezzy You have to do them all again as Luigi iirc.

Octane

Octane

@Northwind Yeah, but you can't control the amount of water presumably. And is it confirmed you can lock Mario in place by another button?

Octane

Dezzy

@Octane

Exactly the same though? I thought they were harder in some way?

Octane

@Dezzy Nah. Maybe you find that Luigi controls a bit harder, but the levels themselves are completely the same.

Maybe you're referring to the prankster comets? They appear at random and change up the level with a new challenge objective.

@Dezzy like Octane said, you redo them as Luigi. The content stays the same but Luigi is much harder to control. Everything is Ice to him.
And then after you do that you can go to the beginning stage -peach’s castle- and get the final 121st Star.

What were the purple coins about in Galaxy? Or were they in Galaxy 2? Been so long since I played it through fully.

@status-204

I don't know about "gimmick" exactly but I do find that the 2D and more linear 3D games are more replayable than the exploration focused games.
3D World is noway near my favourite, but I have played through it like 4 times already.

@Dezzy Yeah, purple coins were a thing in Galaxy as well. Basically the 100-coin challenge. But they only appeared as a comet star. So once in a while you'd get a purple comet in specific levels.

In hindsight it's so weird how few ''regular'' stars there are. Nearly half of them are locked behind comets.

@SKTTR Woah what? Where in the world was there a blue coin counter?

link3710

Octane

@link3710 IIRC, press Z to open the map, and click on the shine sprite in the top right corner.

Never mind, I remember it. When you open the map, you can hover over the locations and it will tell you the amount of blue coins you've gotten in that area.

@link3710 In this example Corona Mountain is selected, and as you can see, it says 0 blue coins in the bottom right:

Ok so the joycon acts like a wiimote for Galaxy. But isn't that based on the gyroscope functionality? And wouldn't that mean that you could use the same function on the pro controller or on the joycons while they're attached to the 2-handed grip?

Corona ***** mountain. I missed you.

@Octane I literally never have seen that map screen before. That's a thing in Sunshine?

link3710

Octane

@link3710 Yeah, press Z to open it (y'know, that weird purple trigger thing everyone always forgets about);

@Octane ...Well, that makes all those 'did you know Isle Delfino is shaped like a dolphin' graphics even stupider knowing it literally shows a map of it in-game.
