@link3710 yep, there from the original. You have to go the map screen and click on the area you want
-corona mountain, pinna park, Ricco harbor, etc. - and it’ll give you information and how many blue coins you’ve collected.

Edit: oop, already answered. Never mind.

And also Dolphin is the code name of GameCube but most people think that it's just the name of the emulator.

This feels slightly off-topic, but do any of you have that feeling that Odyssey was more "gimmick-based" than the previous 3D titles? I hadn't played it in two years, fired it up the other day, and a few hours in there was just no joy in redoing it. Maybe it's just me getting older, but I can play 2D Mario games over and over because they remain challenging and fun even when you know everything about them. M64 used to be the same for me (could replay it endlessly back in the day), and I'm curious to see if it remains true.

I feel exactly the same about Super Mario Odyssey even when I started playing it. It's somewhat boring and uninspired and my least favourite Mario 3D game, my favourite being Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64 although Super Mario 64 needs and deserves a remake.

@BlueOcean OHH YEAHHH, "dolphin" crap, you're right. It was the code word for gamecube. Yer so smrt @BlueOcean I never made the connection with Delfino.

You're a basement nerd and I have real life friends that I talk to and that don't know what code name Dolphin is 😉.

@status-204 if any game was gimmick-based it would be Galaxy. But it seemed to work well. I felt Odyssey was actually one of the more laid back games.

Maybe you're referring to the prankster comets? They appear at random and change up the level with a new challenge objective.

I get my MSc result that day, so will either be celebrating or drowning my sorrows with 3d Mario.

@Apportal @status-204 My take on this is that the gimmicks of Galaxy are the tiny planets, gravity and motion controls (that I always hate in platform games) but the gameplay is based on action and challenges, while Odyssey seems to be built around collecting scattered moons and exploring dull locations using complex moves (gimmicks) if you are able to trigger them. Super Mario 64 and Sunshine are a combination of exploration, platforming and challenges. Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D Land are streamlined fun based on A to B Mario 2D games.

@BlueOcean dull locations? I thought odyssey had great worlds. The only ones I really don’t like are the 4 small kingdoms. Every other one ranged from unique to expansive worlds.

@Apportal They are different and some are visually nice, I'll give them that 😁. What is your favourite and why?

@BlueOcean I liked the Wooded Kingdom the most. I've always been fascinated with floral and such, so the environment just really clicked. I also liked all the different things you could do there. It also just felt so standalone. Like I was trapped or something. Felt awkwardly satisfying. Weird reasons, I know. I can't really explain why I like it so much.

I also liked Seaside and Lake for their visuals specifically. Very pretty. Ruined was a missed opportunity to be something great, which is why its probably my least favorite.

@Apportal Seaside Kingdom is one of my favorites too. Always liked beaches and tropical resorts so I'm partial to this one. I liked wandering around there for the fun of it! Really like Lake Kingdom as well. Both have relaxing music and delightful visuals

@Apportal The main reason I hate Ruined Kingdom is that they made it literally only a boss arena. There was just so much packed in there in terms of design it could have easily been a full size kingdom.

But yeah, Luncheon Kingdom, Wooded Kingdom, Metro Kingdom... that game is stuffed full of great places. If anything felt uninspired, it was Lake Kingdom. And maybe Cascade, though at least that one is memorable despite being too short.

As someone who's beaten Galaxy at least 4 times... I can't name a single location in that game save the Observatory and Good Egg Galaxy. Also, I know Gusty Garden Galaxy as a name... solely cause of the music. Galaxy might be fun, but iconic locales aren't really it's thing.

Dezzy

Well no-one took up my question about Galaxy, so I'll ask again for people who missed it. If the pointer functionality on the joycons relies on the gyroscope, does that mean it will automatically work on the pro controller and joycon grip controller as well?

I thought those were basically the same hardware function, but I wasn't sure? Because that would mean if you're playing Galaxy in handheld, you don't need to keep moving your hands around to use the touchscreen. You could just use the gyro. Anyone?

Ralizah

@Dezzy Yeah, there's no reason gyro controls for collecting star bits should work any less well with the Pro controller, or in handheld mode. The only reason you'd really want to play with detached joycons is because the spin motion gesture is probably easier to trigger that way.

@Northwind

Yeah I've used it for Breath of the Wild. Or I've used the PS4 controller adapter anyway, which uses the gyroscope functionality just like the Pro controller. It works brilliantly in BotW

@Ralizah

That's what I thought, but I was unsure if there was another hardware function at play too. The right joycon has a infra-red thingy on the bottom, and I wasn't sure what its role was in this, cos obviously the Wiimote used infrared for the pointer.

Ralizah

@Dezzy I know it can be used with certain motion gestures (like the reloading gesture in Resident Evil Revelations, for example), but it shouldn't impact basic gyro controls.

@Ralizah

How is it used exactly?
