Topic: Is SNES Online Dead?

It's a wonderful app. When it dropped, I got a few hours out of it playing Mario and Kirby with a friend online and loved every minute of it. I only wish there was more to the experience, and it'd be silly to assume I'm alone in that thought.

We're hedging on 4 months without an update now. If we consider the absolute gargantuan of supremacy that is the SNES library, it's difficult to rationalize why there hasn't been an update as we approach the new year.

Is it reasonable to assume this will be a continuing pattern? Will there be any future updates at all, or is the SNES library doomed to be out-of-reach historical artifacts?

Hyperbole aside, I'd like your thoughts.

I am surprised that there has not been more games added to SNES app. Maybe they will announce more in the the early 2020 direct.

I remember hearing that they're no longer adding games to NES and SNES Online every month. They basically said they will continue to add games, but on a more irregular basis.

Immediately after SNES games were added to NSO, Nintendo went on record saying that they would cease adding games to the service on a monthly basis. So it's fair to assume Nintendo will update NSO on a quarterly basis, once every three months. Probably one NES game and one SNES game will be added sometime in December. If we get into January without an update, then I'll worry.

@Magician That sounds like some pretty slim pickings though. I'd honestly expect more.. not like I really care though, for me Tetris 99 was already worth 20 bucks and even if it wasn't, I don't think missing 20 bucks a year would change my life in any way.

I'm surprised anyone is surprised by this.
NES Online was phoned in even with regular updates. A lot of forgettable, fun-for-10mins titles with a few gems peppered in there. Then they started adding glorified save states labelled "SP" and counted those as one of the three games sometimes.
I thought they were doing the bare minimum as it was, but they've set a new low bar by announcing they have no commitment to it whatsoever (which is basically what "not adhering to any set schedule" means).
I'd be genuinely surprised if they add anything beyond shovelware or "SP" titles before next September when a lot of subscriptions become due.

@Cotillion I think a decent amount of people's subs will be due in April (I got mine for tetris 99), so maybe something before then?

I only pay for online for splatoon. The rest of the online service is a joke. No updates. No native voice chat. No messaging service. And I can buy a offline Tetris 99

The problem with the SNES titles is that they are really just a bit too good. Not many of the NES titles really stand up to modern standards, but the likes of Link to the Past, Yoshi’s Island and Super Metroid can punch their weight with anything released today. Too many free games means Switch users aren’t spending money elsewhere. Another small batch around Christmas/new year makes sense, to convince people to subscribe or resubscribe.

They're probably working on some stuff behind the scenes that none of us here would ever know about...

Wait, sorry. It's the internet. <clears throat>

It's horrible! They forgot about it! I demand my 2 dollars a month back!

<in all seriousness, though>

It is a bummer they had that initial slate of releases and then didn't do anything with it for a few months. I will say I'm jealous of people who've had the time to truly go through and beat every one of those games already, though. I did Yoshi's Island and I'm still like halfway through Zelda - I just don't have enough time, so I haven't even make it beyond 2 games so I can't really complain.

They probably saw that no one liked or cared about the monthly NES releases and are gonna do larger, but less frequent ones. If I had to guess.

I already played through everything I wanted to the first month SNES Online became available. I haven’t resubscribed yet, but I’ll use my gold points if some more worthwhile games come along.

I’ve got more than enough to play right now with Fire Emblem and Witcher 3, so I’m not too impatient.

Some platforming hijinks with my man DK would be welcome anytime though.

I wouldn't be surprised if they either: (a) add some new games over the next few weeks for all the new console owners who get a Switch for the holidays (b) reveal some new perk or something out of left field for, once again, enticing all the new console owners

Bit of positive thinking, yea, but they're gonna have a lot more people with a Switch very soon, and they want to get as many as possible to dish out for the online service.

Well, for me, regardless of the updates to the app I am certain they will make in the future, I have already gotten more than my money's worth of it. I hardly put 3 or 4 hours into the NES Online App. This one? Between just two or three games, I have put over 25 hours into it. And i have many more I want to play. The service definitely isn't dead. Nintendo is just taking their sweet time updating it. Probably saving most of the updates for special events like Nintendo Directs.

@komodo182 Funny timing, isn't it? NL wrote an article, Arlo dropped a video, this thread, etc.—It almost looks like Nintendo was responding.

I hope we don't have to wait too long for SMRPG. Playing it on the Switch would be ideal.

"Larger" is arguable tbh. shrugs

I'm not complaining, since its a decent service regardless that still should be its own thing because here is your reminder that online console gaming shouldn't cost extra money.
