@TraCuz- So, do you already have Mario Odyssey? Or you've already ruled it out? Reading your initial post, Mario Odyssey was what I thought best fit your description. It's been my favorite 3d mario game ever. I've played through it twice on my own, and another two times with my nieces.
Age of Calamity actually has a demo. Should probably download that before committing to the game. It'll also let you know if you're able to stomach the performance issues.
@TraCuz- Based on the Bowser's Fury expansion included with the Super Mario 3D World port, and seeing how long it has been since we've gotten a proper mainline game, my long-standing prediction is that the next Mario game is going to be an open-world title. Not in the 'wandering around in the wilderness for hours' sense, but in the sense that the various worlds/challenges will be connected and available on the same map.
It's the obvious evolution point from Odyssey's larger sandbox environments as well.
@TraCuz- I totally forgot about Bowsers fury, it might be a little unpopular, but I think that the game mode is worth it alone tbh, so if you were going to pick aoc or 3D world, 3D world 100%

You wish to pick from those options? Well, it depends in the end which type of game you enjoy.
I have Metroid Dread, so I can tell you what it’s all about. It’s a 2D game, not like the Prime games. Obviously, you play as Samus, who is exploring a planet called SR388. You progress through the game by collecting power ups for Samus, since she initially starts with merely some basic moves and her arm cannon. Yes you are right, there is a fair bit of backtracking, and you will get stuck in quite a few parts of the game, from challenging boss fights and getting lost as to where to go. I’ll tell you this right now: the game does not hold your hand throughout. It’s all up to you here. If you are having a tough go of it, I suggest an online guide from IGN or something. I like Metroid Games, but I get lost and frustrated several times and need to reference a guide. If you like a longer game with tons of exploration, awesome combat and boss fights, and are willing to deal with the difficulty, I can’t recommend this game or this franchise enough.
On to Super Mario 3D World. I had this game for the Wii U, not the switch version, but the switch version is identical, aside from the Bowser’s Fury mode from what I understand. I don’t know a lot about Bowser’s Fury, but I have played the base game on the Wii U. This is indeed a really fun Mario game, your hunch is spot on. You can play as one of 4 characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad. You also get an extra character in the postgame, I won’t tell you who it is. Mario is Mario, the standard character. Luigi can jump higher, and Peach can hover for a time. This game is not necessarily challenging, but it’s still a great time. I find this game even better with friends, so you can tackle levels together and be menaces and through each other off the stage. I recommend if you are looking for a solid, fun game to play with friends.
Now, I haven’t touched the Bayonetta franchise, I know little to nothing about it, sorry.
Hyrule Warriors: I haven’t played Age Of Calamity, but I have played the first Hyrule Warriors for switch, I haven’t owned the game in years, so I’m reciting this off of memory as well. This is much different from your average Zelda experience, with much more emphasis on combat. If you have played the likes of the first Fire Emblem Warriors or it’s sequel, Three Hopes, or Dynasty warriors in general, then you will already know what to expect. If you don’t, allow me to give a brief summary. You play as several characters at once, swapping NL between each at a time while the computer controls the rest. You battle massive hordes of enemies, none of which are any kind of strong. You just get to slap around thousands of enemies at once with fun and exciting attacks. The in battle quests can be a pain, but they are necessary to finish the battle. Extra characters can be unlocked outside of the main story, but it’s such a pain to do so, you will have to invest a lot of time to get these extras. The whole game is Zelda themed, so naturally expect familiar locations, music, and characters from the Breath Of The Wild game. Great fun if you can handle longer battles with exciting attacks, like I mentioned. That was a poor description, but a relevant one, I suppose.
I haven’t played Legends: Arceus, so I don’t really know what to say. Open world Pokémon game I guess? I’ve only played the mainline entries aside from Scarlet and Violet.
Mario Party Superstars is one I would consider in my opinion. Sure you can play this game with the CPU, but like most MP games, it gets old and it starts to suck. This is the rare Mario Party game with online multiplayer, but I’m not a fan of that either. The connection is choppy, and matches usually drag on for hours, or several people disconnect out of boredom. I’d stick to playing the Minigames and playing locally with friends. Yes, that’s more limited, but the game is still plenty of fun. I would kept this game in the back of your mind, don’t prioritize it.
I played a few minutes of the Game Boy version of Link’s Awakening, it didn’t really hook me. I’d ask for advice from people who have actually played the game and finished it instead.
That was long and winded, but I hope I helped a little bit.
Zelda aoc is the most boring, frustrating, unfun game I have ever played. Metroid on the other hand is amazing and definitely worth playing (the game is a bit short though and is for sure aimed at speed-runners)
I fear no man
but that thing:
The carrot minigame from bowser's inside story
it scares me
I see that Age of Calamity isn't popular here so I'll share my opinion: The game is the best Warriors game that I have played by far (I haven't played Persona Strikers despite of having it though). Unlike other Warriors games, it actually has unique characters with different gameplays, beautiful and unique visuals, fantastic music and a satisfying story, specially if you liked Breath of the Wild. Not only that, because of the Rune system, items and it being more challenging than other warriors games, it's way more engaging than any other musou that I have played. Also, it has a lot of content. Sure, the first Hyrule Warriors has even more, but if you prefer quality over quantity this entry is the way to go.
As for performance, it isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I see people giving other games a pass and being way more harsh with this one and Monster Hunter Stories 2 in that regard.
Do consider to play Breath of the Wild before playing it though. Same with Tears of the Kingdom.
Metroid Dread is also a great option. A bit short, but very replayable in my opinion.
I do recommend you to watch reviews and other stuff since in the end everyone has different tastes. Best of luck with your choices.
Honestly I played 3D world and I played the age of calamity demo so I’ll give my thoughts on those.
3D world + bowsers fury: I played 3D world on the Wii U before with my sister and honestly it’s a REALLY good game taking some of the best stuff of 3D land and building up from it with a some new power-ups that are really fun to use (cat bell and double cherry) and some fun bosses and great levels but 100%ing it is a bit of a hassle in single player (you have to get all the stamps and to get some of them you have to beat all the levels with every single character so if your playing it single player then you have to beat every single level time unless you use a little trick that involves using 4 controllers) but it’s still pretty fun and from what I played of bowsers fury at a target game demo thing it’s also pretty good so yeah I definitely give 3D world a 9/10.
AoC:honestly the games pretty fun but if you don’t like repetition then you probably won’t like the game (it’s a hack and slash game where you beat up 100’s of enemies) but honestly I don’t mind that. It also has a good amount of characters from what I heard of. (Also hyrule warriors and AoC are the only Zelda games that has a RPG-like level system so there’s that :/) I’d give the game an 8.
So yeah that’s my sorta mini review thingy (I also never played bayonetta and I haven’t played the demo of Metroid dread yet) hope this helps.
@roy130390 That I agree on, I have played three others and gotta be honest, I could never beat them, I just find them to boring after a wile, hyrule age of calamity is the o lot one I actually finished, and it being my first! And I love these warriors games! I just find it so hard to recommend if you’re not fimilliar with the series already, that and it has a lot of performance issues on the switch. However, there is a demo which I forget
