Topic: Good alternative to Joy Cons

Hi everyone, I've started to experience Joy con drift in the last 10 days or so, at first it was minimal but now is getting to the point where its super annoying and disrupting gameplay. I have done all the usual fixes for it and recalibrated but its not helping.

I have a Pro controller for when the Switch is docked & am starting to use it in handheld mode, but its a bit of a pain when I want to play handheld to have to stand the Switch up in order to play.

I know there have been issues with the Joy Cons and I am not keen on shelling out £50 or £70 for new Joy Cons which are only going to develop the same problems. I know we can send the troublesome device to Nintendo for a repair but I honestly can't be bothered with the hassle of it all (and who knows when it will get fixed whilst we're currently in lockdown)

Is there a good alternative to the Joy Cons that won't break my Switch should I connect it? I did see this one https://www.game.co.uk/en/split-pad-pro-2725751 but wondered if anyone else knew if this one was any good or knew of anything better that has features like HD rumble etc? The one in the link is licensed by Nintendo so might be a good bet.

I'm not happy that the Joy Con has started to do this as I've been so careful with it, knowing the stories of what can happen with them. Just goes to show its definitely a manufacturing problem and not the problem of players being rough with the device.

Thanks peeps.

@Pink_Yoshi I also got drifting problem on my joycon :0 But I managed to fix it with uh...

So first, do you have something like this?

https://www.tororo.com/pub/media/catalog/product/cache/c687aa...

If you do, then you can do what I did to fix the problem. First you'll have to lift up the flap on the joystick which will let you see the white part inside. Once it's lifted, use a small pipette / straw thing that can suck liquid and get very little of the oil into it, then you can drip it to the joystick which you have picked the flap open

Once that done, just rotate the joystick around a bit then test it again in a game where you noticed the drift. I dripped the oil a few times and it works really well! Still working even after a month and it hasn't come up as a problem again.

Otherwise, I have heard people saying good thing about the HORI Split Pad Pro: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Machina-Ergonomic-Cont...

Edit: Oh, oops sorry didn't see you link the same thing xD but yeah I heard good stuff about the split pad pro! The downsides is that you can't use it when not on handheld mode and that it doesn't have rumble and such. But other than that I heard good stuff about how it feels and that it feels more like procon but split into two

Oh that's helpful, thank you @darkfenrir I will definitely try that. I don't have that specific oil but do you think a tiny amount of any other oil could do the trick? At the moment there's nothing to break as its already broken, so do you think I could try a tiny amount of something like WD-40 or even Vaseline?! If its just a case of oiling the components it may well work but let me know if you think that's dodgy!

That's also really helpful regarding the Split Pad Pro, the reviews look really good. I think that will probably be the one I'll go for in the end. Like I said, I would have replaced the Joy Con with another if they'd actually fixed the drifting issue!

Many thanks for your help

@Pink_Yoshi no problem, I'm not sure if any other oils will work since this is the type of oil you rub on your body and it'll evaporate quite fast. So maybe if the oil is something like that you can try it up. For WD-40, iirc you have to ensure you are using the WD-40 that is for electronics since it differs with the ones for locks and hinges.

On another note, Split Pad Pro might also drift in the future (just like how my Xbox One's controller drifts), but it probably will take longer than joycon.

I hope that you can fix your drift since it's always annoying to buy something new haha. Especially at this current climate

Hey @darkfenrir I have tried some coconut oil on it and its definitely improved the problem! Its not totally fixed but has vastly improved. I will give it a little while and see how it goes then maybe try something else. But thanks for the suggestion, very useful!

Re the WD-40, I'll remember that also as I didn't know

Definitely annoying to have to buy something new especially when they're so expensive and can just get the same problem within months - if Nintendo brings out a much better alternative I shall buy it though!

@Pink_Yoshi No problem! Glad it's improved! I have to put in a few more oil than I wanted to before it's all gone but as long as it works... well I don't have problem repeating it haha

If calibrating doesn't work and continues your best Choices are to talk to NIN support and get them fixed or replaced. Using oil in Joy-Con is asking for trouble and ill advised. There are those warnings on YT already to not do that.

@Switchforce I just worked on the lines of its already broken so can't be spoiled. I'm not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of going down the Nintendo Support route at the moment as obviously everyone is in lockdown and I don't know if they'll even be there for repairs? Thank you for your advice, certainly if I get a new controller I won't use any oil on it!

Like I said earlier, I'd just buy a new Joy Con if I knew the problems had all been fixed.

Not sure about the UK, but here in the US, the repair centers are closed because of the situation. As a result, I ended up ordering a second set of Joy-Cons in event mine start to drift, and I can't send it in for repair. Most likely it's going to stay in the box until I need them.

My Joy-Con did give me trouble once, but using calibration fixed it. Most of the time, I just use a wired controller, or more recently, a Pro Controller. I rarely use Joy-Cons unless the game requires them, or I take my Switch with me.
