Hello everyone, have a quick question wanted to ask. Had my switch about 5 years and about all my games are physical but this year i have dove into the eshop pretty hard and filled up 2 128gb cards. My question is what card would you recommend and is it possible to transfer the 2 sd cards onto one without having to download everything again ?

Thanks in advance

@old-dad No, the switch anti-piracy system will not allow you to consolidate & combine two cards. Don't be shocked if you have to redownload games for a new card. Your Album folder contents (screenshots & clips) can be pasted & onto your new card, I believe.

If you have to redownload your games: Go to the redownload page on eshop, you can check off all the games you want to redownload, and leave the switch in sleep mode over night to download the games. I was able to download most of my games over night for my 400gb card. Everyone who upgrades or transfers to a new console has to do it.

Regarding a card recommendation. The best deals for cards are on amazon, but there are a few rules to follow to avoid bogus counterfeit cards on Amazon.

  • Stick to a big name brand you know. Sandisk, Samsung, etc.
  • Only buy from a page with A LOT of reviews, like tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands positive reviews.
  • Only buy a card that is Sold & Shipped by Amazon. Stay away from thrid party sellers.
  • If the card's price is too good to be true, it probably is.

Side note: So far, the switch hardware cannot utilize U3 speed cards. So, there's no real benefit for getting U3 speed card for the Switch. However, if you want a future proof card, in case you ever repurpse the card later on, I wouldn't blame you for getting a U3 speed card in that case.

@WoomyNNYes Thank you so much for the help. Is there a size limit ?

old-dad

WoomyNNYes

@old-dad The limit is mentioned in Nintendo support somehwere, possibly on their Switch micro sd FAQ page? I know for a fact you can use a 1TB card. I know people in here that use a 1TB sandisk card in their switch. The card size limit was 1TB or 2TB, I can't recall which.

edit: Nintendo support used to mention size limit, but now it seems they no longer specify a size limit, which is a surprising change.

If it helps any, I recently bought one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-MicroSDXC-Fastest-INMSDX512...

My old card claimed to be U3 too, but this one is definitely loading things faster. Ran into some teething problems, some things leave data behind (claiming for whatever reason that some data can't be moved) when you try to move them around, such as Youtube, I moved it to the system memory and put in the new card but it lost all my recommendations and such.

I don't know what the implications of that are if a game leaves data behind on the old card after trying to move it to system memory and vice versa, or deleting the game and re-downloading it after putting in the new card.

Don't archive the games though, re-download them on the new card or it gets confused and you'll have to delete them and re-download them anyway.

For captures, there's an option in the system settings to copy them over from the card to the system and vice versa, and an option then to delete all the captures from the card so you don't have duplicates.

@TopazLink Thank you for the link. I picked up a 512gb card at Walmart yesterday so I'll just have to roll with that for now.
Sure hope they come up with something better for the next system. It's sort a pita the way switch handles sd cards lol

sd cards aren't Nintendo issues that is with the manufacture of sd cards. You have to do homework to insure you buy good microsd carts. I have two sandisk 1tb and they work without issues. What your saying here last is you need to have a family NSO account so you can cloud store your saves and redownload them and your eShop games are tied to your NSO account should you need to redownload them. But what you want to do is cloud store the save or eShop games so you don't have to worry about where did my games go. I had to do a family plan for 4 accounts and stored the data because our family have two Switches now and both have same setup for both Switches.

@SwitchForce With the family plan can you move Sd cards from one console to other and still play the same games ?

@old-dad Nintendo's anti-piracy ties micro sd cards to the console. Even if sharing a family plan or the same nintendo account, I believe you'll be blocked. When you put the card into another switch, it will say something like, "card is from another console", and won't let you do anything unless you reformat (wipe) the card. If someone else here knows better, by all means, share your knowledge.

Everyone who's upgraded to a newer console (like the OLED) has had to format the card to the new console and redownload all purchased digital content.

@WoomyNNYes thank you, kinda thought that was the case. Was gonna pick me up a switch lite or Zelda edition if it actually exists.

Wish or hope they do something similar to xbox when it comes to the switch successor. On the xbox i can just take my external hardrive between my series x and one x. So simple lol

I bet that's Phil Spencer's doing. I don't think corporate Nintendo has a Phil-Spencer-type to push for that. I think it's safe to say everyone here would welcome that, though. That would be nice!

No, the Next switch will not recognize and will ask to reformat that sd card as that was formatted for another Switch. That's the catch swapping sd cards formatted in another Switch will ask to format it. Have your games cloud data saved is the better alternative so it downloads the current saved game data so you can continue on the next console when it downloads the data back to update. This is where Cloud saves for each family account comes into play. sd cards can't be swapped to another Switch.
