Donkey Kong Bananza. I wish I saw a fraction of what others see. The camera is most often inside geometry, but it doesn't really matter because all you do is smash *****.
I had a lot of fun with DKB, but I think the game's length was such that it didn't outstay its welcome, and I felt like I got everything I needed to out of my playthrough — I certainly have no desire to go in the DLC anytime soon.
@Filthy DKB is incredibly boring and repetitive. I got ~3 hours out of it and was sick of it. Not played it since. I really don't understand any of the praise. It's like a pachinko machine platformer designed to fry my dopamine receptors.
I’m willing to go so far as to say that no one would care about it if it was a new/lesser known character in a non-Nintendo game.
I'm sure you could argue the same case for Hogwarts Legacy — most of the praise I hear about that game is that it's great to walk around in and explore Hogwarts - the gameplay itself sounds alarmingly by-the-numbers

Weird, in some ways I’ve felt the opposite.
I think it’s one of the best 3D platformers Nintendo has ever made (on the level of Mario Odyssey) and I’m honestly surprised at how many are dismissing it as not being a top-tier exclusive for the Switch 2 because it’s not Mario, Zelda or Smash.
Different strokes I guess. A lot of people were negative about Odyssey and that game is phenomenal.
@Andee I agree. I’ve only watched my wife play and helped with some puzzles. I find it painfully dull. 100% brand boosted.
@Buizel Definitely a ”different” strokes thing, and it could definitely be on an Odyssey level, as I think that’s the worst 3D Mario game with very little to go for it, yet it resonates with most. 😅

It took me an hour or two to figure out how to control the camera well enough to make it essentially never in geometry. I agree it would be better if they had somehow made it so the issue couldn't happen.
There definitely is a lot of smash. Less in the later game but still a lot. There are over 100 mini games though and most of those are not smash. But if you don't like smashing, I can see how the game wouldn't be fun.
There was one bit, right before the first proper showdown with Void, where you need currency to progress, where I spent the best part of an hour smashing the land just to basically grind, which was probably the only time it did start to get a bit monotonous
@Andee I'm surprised you didn't have enough gold at that stage; I had far more than I needed. Perhaps because I had done so much side content by that point.
@FishyS Yeah I pretty much barrelled (lol) through the majority of the main campaign; in hindsight I probably should have gone back and done a few more sidequests, but I felt like I was getting to the end by that point and was pretty keen to wrap it up.
Metal Gear Solid 2. Played for about 2 hours and it was such a frustrating time. Wonky controls, convoluted sections, etc. I got so tired of trying the same sections over and over and just said forget it. The first game was OK, but i didn't have the patience to see this one through.
@NintendoByNature Metal Gear Solid 2 was just a let down period after playing the first one. It made no sense why they didnt make Snake the main character and why replace him with Raiden? Such a disappointed. Definitely give 3 a shot though probably the best game in the series.

@NintendoByNature I have heard good things about the remaster. I havent played version yet last one I played was the 3DS one years ago which was solid (no pun intended).

I recently stopped playing Super Mario 3D World somewhere in World 3. Lots of nice ideas, but the presence of a timer and time constraint in a game that encourages exploration did not sit well with me. That, and the fact that I only play solo limited my enjoyment of the game.
Shadow the Hedgehog for the original Xbox. I finished it fully back in the day and remember having a good time with it but going back to it now years later and my God I realise just how much it sucks. It was my guilty pleasure back then but today? not so much even though admittedly I still do like being bad and filling up the dark gauge just to hear him say "death to all who oppose me"

Once you unlock the Stealth Camouflage for both characters (Snake and Raiden) I found the game far more enjoyable personally. Just sneak up behind enemy soldiers and hold them up so they drop their dog tag. Once you collect enough you unlock the Stealth.
Then again, I might jump back into it. Like a couple of other RetroWare titles, the jumping just feels unnecessarily weighty & clunky just like in Prison City. AVGN feels like he's hopping around in metal pants with a ball & chain strapped to each ankle. This isn't Donkey Kong, It's the AVGN for crying out loud. Plus, you can't jump any time you want to while sliding like you can in lets say Mega Man 3. I feel like I'm constantly fighting twith the controls.
Ultimately, it plays like a much worse controlling classic mega man game, while granting you Castlevania-like Sub-weapons. Graphics are very nice, the soundtrack is really well done(Airworld Springs to mind), there's obviously some fun nods & characters peeled right out of AVGN, while also playing homage to older retro titles like Dr. Jeckyl & Mr Hyde, but the controls totally hamper the experience. Specifically the feel of the jumps and not being able to jump while sliding until the slide is finished animating.
And really, this game is tougher than most of the classic 8-Bit MM games, but it's made even harder with the less intuitive controls at your disposal. Bummer! It's almost like the devs' purposely made the game cheap at times to frustrurate gamers so they'd react the exact same way as AVGN.
Also, DOOM 64 (NS)
Probably one of the best opimized Boomer Shooters on NS, but if you're a fan of Yawn/Gyro controls like i am than you're going to be really disappointed with this one in particular(Including Duke Nukem 3D World Tour) when using the Pro Controller...Even if you crank up the Gyro/Motion sensitivity they're just not responsive enough nor cover enough ground. They feel sloppy compared to the tight precision and speed you get with the latest DOOM 1+2 update once fine tuned in the settings. It's Night and day. Wish they'd patch this one so you could get Yawn Gyro every bit as good as the former, because this version of D64 I find is way more compelling than 1+2. It's got more punch to the gameplay, and i like it's darker moodier tone.
Could of sworn that the gyro/yawn sensitivity was noticeably better using the Joy-Con's paired with the traditional controller shelll grip. Might have to try that again, even though I'll have to resort back to crappier analog sticks, tiny cheap buttons and the bottom right stick getting in the way every time i reach and press the B button. HD Rumble also feels a bit more impactful with the JCN's too.
