Given that Nintendo are making the Switch appeal more to the core gamer, what do you think the future of Mario Party will be?
Switch already has two controllers bundled with it, and the ability to play with other Switch consoles for multiplayer is a perfect fit for the franchise. We've also seen that they were willing to correct the mistakes in Mario Kart 8 battle mode, so would you expect a return to the 'classic' (no stupid cars or linear path) Mario Party gameplay?
Personally, I would like to see them drop the numbered naming scheme and focus on turning it into a platform with plenty of options for rule customisations.
I just want them to make a solid one like we haven't seen since Mario Party 4. No controller / hardware gimmicks. No gimmicky modes that nobody asked for. Back to board-game style maps, solid mini games, great music, and fun for 2-4 players.
Mario Party is one of my favorite franchises, and it's a shame that Nintendo has so royally ruined it. I liked the gamecube entries the best. The linear maps are garbage, the fixed number of turns are garbage, the everybody-traveling-together mechanic is garbage, and mini-stars are garbage. Give us coins to buy stars and items with, customizable game lengths, and players moving independently. They seriously took away everything that was fun about the game!
I have to believe that Mario Party 11 (I guess they don't count the handheld ones) will all control using only a single Joy-Con. So that's one stick, four buttons plus the triggers, and all the motion stuff.
I also am convinced that Nintendo wants that franchise nowhere near the Switch launch or E3, as it has only ever generated bad press for them since the whole anti-casual, anti-Wii narrative started up.
I've never understood the criticism that the old playstyle of each taking their own turn was boring people. I mean, most board games are turn-based! It only felt like an hour before it was one's turn again because they introduced way too many gimmicks such as items, events and so on that each turn took longer than in the N64 installments. That's how I feel like at least.
Looking at Switch, like @Haru17 said, it's likely the controls will be limited to one Joy-Con per player. HD Rumble might see use in some minigames, motion controls as well. I'm okay with that as long as they return to the classic MP formula, throw out any unnecessary stuff and keep items and events to a minimum.
