Ys VIII and Ys IX are great

Have you played Skyrim? If not; play Skyrim.

Definitely would second the Dragon Quest Builders 2 rec, and much more so than DQB1. They improved many game elements and the second one has way more character/plot development than the first. Also the demo for 2 is much longer and gives you essentially a third of the game for free.

Kingdom of Amular is coming to Switch and is one of the best action RPG's of the 360 gen.

We're not talking about a tabletop rpg, with dice and dungeon masters.

Any video game with a progression system qualifies as an rpg these days.

Hades has a progression system, does it not?

Switch 2 Physical Collection - 3 games (as of November 23rd, 2025)

So far the games that have been recommended that peak my interest are
-Dragon quest xi (not an action rpg but the artstyle looks nice)
-Dragon Quest Builders 2
-Hades
-Xenoblade 2 (I was gonna pick it up sometime anyway)
-Tales of Vesperia
THIS ISN'T ME CLOSING THE TOPIC, I JUST WANTED TO SAY

@Jackpaza0508 this thread has "Tales of Vesparia" written all over it. I can't recommend it enough to you.

Also second Trials of Mana and obviously Skyrim. Not comparable, but both offer exntensive RPG elements while keeping the battle moreless real-time.

@Magician ok genius, then super mario brothers is an RPG, cause I’m playing the role of a hallucinating plumber

when you said RPG, I didn’t know you literally meant any game on earth

@Jackpaza0508 Those are all awesome choices, that you'll have a lot of fun with. I haven't played Vesperia, Builders II or Hades, and I'm honestly seriously considering Hades.

Every now and then there'll be an indie game that just destroys the standard conventions of an indie game. Games like this are Celeste, No Man's Sky, and to some extent Undertale. I have all three.

I usually don't buy indies, but when there's a good one, it'll be darn good.

Does Astral Chain count as an action rpg, or is it more of a straightforward action game?

@NintendoByNature It has a levelling system which would probably make it a RPG but it's more of an action game imo.

@jump it had a leveling system? Man it's been a while since I've played lol. I played at launch so it's been a year and a half. Guess that means I need to go back if I forgot that much already!

jump

@NintendoByNature yeah but it’s something you can completely ignore and be fine to finish the game which is why I’d label it as an action game.

Have you tried Trials of Mana? I'm certain someone has mentioned it already, but its quite a fun game to play. Since you're looking for more "real time" action as opposed to the more traditional RPG experience then I'd recommend it, as well as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edtion.

I'll 2nd both of these. Both are outstanding games. XC is an easy 10/10. You pick your movesets in real time which is super fun. Trials is more action based and can get pretty crazy, especially during boss battles. Almost makes me want to replay it!
