@shane17 not stupid at all, so many factors affect a players position from stamina, work rate, etc its looking at things and trying to find that balance.

I've been playing these games since FM05 and back when it was Championship Manager and I still struggle. Keep going, tweaking things until you find something that suits, which is where I have found the 3D match engine comes in handy, you can get a better perspective of whats working and what isn't from it.

@SuperJoon Yeah, it's a tough one...I usually prefer using a Half Back as it causes the central defenders to sit a little wider, leaving them better positioned to cover my full backs when they bomb forward - but Sergi Samper (by far my best option in that area) doesn't play that role very well, so having him set to a defensively-minded Deep Lying Playmaker role seems to be my best bet (for now) - it plays to his strengths (passing/pressing) without leaving his weaknesses overly exposed!

I definitely agree with you about favouring a less complex approach (at least initially) ..my original tactic was a little over-complicated - and I was struggling to see where it was going wrong - it was only after I stripped it right back to basics and just focussed on making minor adjustments here-and-there (slowly layering it up over time) that I started to make some progress! ..a bit of patience, a lot of thought and a fair amount of trial and error - and I've ended up with this reasonably effective tactic - haha!

Look forward to seeing yours later! ..and keep us posted on how you get on with the mighty Boro!

@shane17 Yeah, as above - it's not stupid at all! The player roles have gotten rather complicated over the years - I've had to resort to Google rather a lot just to understand them all!

I managed to find a few websites which gave an example players for each role, which allowed me visualise what they all did a bit better (eg. Target Man = Andy Carroll, Mezzala = Andres Iniesta, Inside Forward = Lionel Messi, Regista = Andrea Pirlo, Roaming Playmaker = Yaya Toure etc) ..unfortunately, I can't seem to find any of the sites any more () but feel free to ask if you have any questions or anything - I totally get how over-complicated it can all seem and I'd be more than happy to help/offer advice if I can! (..I'm sure others on here would too - good crowd here! )

Exactly where I'd have gone with any advice: watch your games...start out with a blank tactical slate, try not to use too many specialist roles, try not to have more than 3/4 players on an attack duty, try to be balanced in approach until you see a need to make a change.

Decide on the base stats that fit with how you want your team to play (flair, technique, pace etc.. might improve on what you already have there) and recruit with these in mind. But know that some stats are core to how a player performs according to your tactical instructions - Teamwork, work rate, determination, decisions for example.

For WBA you're probably not going to want to 'play the ball into the box', as Rondon is magnificent in the air, so focus on your play going to the wings to get those crosses in...if you lack pace on the wings then try using the 'overlap' shout for your fullbacks and have your wide midfielders on a support duty...and make sure you have enough midfielders sat in position to prevent counters into the space the fullbacks leave. Stuff like this.

Same for the 'play out of the back' shout, I wouldn't see this as playing to your strengths with the starting squad - as you probably won't be looking to tiki-taka your way up the pitch quickly using the space gained by bringing the opposition out of their shape.

Try Rondon as a Target Man - S and have Rodriguez as a an Advanced Forward -A, taking advantage of the flick-ons etc..

Just a few ideas really but the best way really is to look at what's happening on the pitch and make changes logically that you think might affect your team positively...not just in hope.

Thanks for the replies - really tempted to grab this on the Switch but can’t justify it currently especially having it on the iPad

Does anyone have touch on the iPad and Switch and can comment how the 2 play and any comparisons?

Played a few games last night, first game was Fulham, found myself 3-1 down at half time, tinkered with the team to retain more and make shorter passes.

Seem to work as they had 2 players sent off in 10 minutes, this is where all out attack came into it, no striker as Mitro was sent off and gap in midfield... Went for it... 3-3, goal in 82nd and 87th minute. Traore setting both up, seems he now had the freedom to run at the defence with less players. Been pretty much man marked all game.

I need a breather after that game.... Was very tense and tactically demanding, which was good.

13 games into the league and I'm still unbeaten, but cracks are showing in the defence, so need to sort that out. Getting posesstion and shots in on goal, need to convert those chances.

I have tried for a few games playing 4-2-4 with Assombalonga up front with Bamford, they work well as a pair and found that having a poacher and a complete striker is a good combo to have, this was one of the tinkers I made 2nd half to Fulham game which got me the draw.

But also found that I was exposed in the middle with only 2 central midfielders as the way Downing and Traore play there mainly going forward, so counter attack is something that I have to be weary of if I play this formation.....

@SuperJoon Nice! Quality looking team there - and a great start to the season! That Fulham game sounded like an epic encounter! ..not surprised you needed to take a breather after that one!

Fulham are a really good team in the game - in my save, they came back from 10+ points behind to almost steal automatic promotion - and gave me some tough matches as well when we came up against each other! (..enough to convince me to sign three of their star players the following summer - haha!)

I spent a bit of time adjusting my tactics last night The tactic I posted yesterday made us difficult to beat (keeping the ball for long periods) which helped to claw us away from relegation trouble - but, despite having the formation set to 'play wider', having Inverted Wing Backs and Inside Forwards (who both like to drift inside) just made us too narrow and fairly easy to defend against. I've now swapped the Inverted Wing Backs for Complete Wing Backs (who hug the touchline, giving us permanent width) - and switched my holding midfield player from Deep Lying Playmaker to Half Back which just helps to spread the defence out a bit...definitely seems to be working a lot better - looking far more dangerous in attack now!

...EURO Cup Europa League, he we come?

Nice! Yeah inverted wing backs and inside forwards is no good for wider play, those players will simply just tuck into more central roles, wingers holding the position on the wing is better, which is what I've instructed Traore to do, man has too much speed to have him getting clogged up, needs to get up to top speed haha!

Got Peterborough in the 4th round of [strike]Carling[/strike]... Carabao cup... Hopefully get through to 5th

@SuperJoon Yeah, definitely! Inverted Wing Backs/Wingers works (as the Wingers provide width) - likewise, Complete Wing Backs/Inside Forwards works (as the Wing Backs provide the width) ..but having both Inverted Wing Backs and Inside Forwards doesn't really seem to provide any width at all (even if you specifically instruct your wing backs to get wider!)

Good luck against the Posh in the League/Milk/Littlewoods Challenge/Rumbelows/Coca-Cola/Carling/Worthington/Capital One/EFL/Carabao [delete as applicable] Cup - winnable tie! ..my cup record has been pretty appalling up to now - ah well, there's always next year!

Its one of those things, the game is programmed to make the inverted wingers and inside forwards move in to the centre, but if you tell them to play wider, it seems like a contradiction to there programming, so they don't nessercarily do it as there master role takes precedent... So weird haha!!

How is everyone getting on with the offside rule in this game?, I swear there seems to be a bug with it as I've lost count of the amount of times offside has been given when players are not offside.

So far my debut season as Leicester City manager seems to be mirroring real life and the wheels have somewhat come off, players injured, couldn't hit a barn door at twenty paces. I'm currently in 11th place mid table was the expectation but after a stonking start is gone pear shaped! To arrest this alarming slide I've switched to 4-4-1-1 and just got my first win in five games. The January transfer window beckons just hope I can recruit the right players......

Farmboy74

NaviAndMii

@SuperJoon Yeah, the description for Inverted Wing Backs says that they'll occupy the wider areas of the pitch if the player ahead of them (in this case, an Inside Forward) has vacated the space - so, in theory, it should've worked...but, when I'd check the Analysis screen, the full backs just didn't seem to be getting in to those areas at all - despite the wider players constantly drifting inside - so I scrapped it!

This is my new 'tiki-taka' tactic - and it's working an absolute treat!

(Defensive line one notch deeper, one notch less wide and 'Fluid' instead of 'Very Fluid' when playing away from home)

Player Instructions:
All players: Closing Down (as much as possible), Tackle Harder
Sweeper Keeper: Distribute To Centre Backs, Take Short Kicks, Slow Pace Down
Ball Playing Defenders: Mark Tighter
Inside Forwards/False 9: Roam From Position

Opposition Instructions
All players: Close Down Always, Tackle Harder
DR/MR: Show on to left foot (to force them inside, in to the press)
DL/ML: Show on to right foot (reason as above)
All other players: Show on to weaker foot
Strikers: Mark Tighter

(EDIT: I decided to scrap 'Use Offside Trap' for a while, as in the above screenshot, preferring that my defenders just track all runners instead - which worked out pretty well - but I've since re-introduced it...with a high defensive line, it's through balls that are going to potentially catch me out, so I feel that I need my defenders to at least try to turn that in to a 'trap' if possible - even if it doesn't work every time! ..currently have the best defensive record in the league early in season 3, so it seems to be doing the trick )

Used it to play the mighty Chelsea off the park in a recent match! (..not bad for a team that the media predicted would finish 19th in the table!)

Untitled

...and followed it up with a 1-0 win at home to Hull City, finishing the match with a whopping 71% possession and 30 shots on goal! Not bad at all! They parked the bus - and parked it well - but there was no stopping the match-winning goal!

@Farmboy74 The match engine does appear to have a few flaws - I often see goals where it'll say that the player who assisted it was different to the player who actually appeared to provide the pass - and offsides certainly don't appear to be 'clear cut' either...where's VAR when you need it!

Sounds like you've managed to steady the ship with Leicester! In my save, because the winners of both domestic cups had qualified for the Champions League, all of the top 8 teams managed to earn places in Europe - so a good run (and hopefully some good signings in Jan) should hopefully see you surpass expectations! Keep us posted!

Just a quick update on my Ipswich save at the start of season 3!

Season 2 - our first in the Premier League - was a fairly rocky ride...having been floating around the relegation zone for much of the first half of the season, the tactical overhaul (above) completely turned our fortunes around - not only did we manage to drag ourselves clear from danger, but our late-season form was (somehow) enough to overhaul the woefully inconsistent Liverpool to finish 6th and snatch a spot in the Europa League!

On the back of that achievement, the board gave me a whopping £89m transfer kitty to spend (actually stretched to over £120m with the help of some staggered payment plans ) which will hopefully allow me to take the team to the next level! My focus has been to try to ensure that I have at least 2 players for each position (with a European adventure ahead, effective squad rotation will be more important than ever) and I'm fairly happy with the balance:

GK: Mile Svilar (Benfica), Nick Hayes
DR: Sam Byram (West Ham), Chiendu Chidi (Academy/Regen)
DL: Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham), Patrick Webber
DC: Adam Webster, Rob Holding (Arsenal - Loan), Tamas Kalas (Chelsea), Jordan Williams (Liverpool)
DM: Philip Billing (Huddersfield), Sergi Samper (Barça)
MC: Andre Dozzell, Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), Tristan Nydam, Yangel Herrera (Man City)
AMR: Marcus Edwards (Tottenham), Vaclav Cerny (Ajax)
AML: Andreas Perreira (Man Utd), Bersant Celina (Man City)
ST: Ben Woodburn (Liverpool - Loan), Dominic Solanke (Liverpool)

...the squad I've assembled is very inexperienced - and not every player is 100% suited to my 'tactical philosophy' (I hope that, with the right training, they'll become more and more effective in their specified roles as time goes on) - but it's a team with great potential, so hopefully I've sewn the seeds for a bright future

So far (aside from an off-day where we got battered 4-0 away at Man City) we've been riding high - 3rd in the table (including wins over Arsenal and Chelsea), top of our (relatively easy) Europa League group and cruising through to the Quarter Finals of the League Cup (having only been drawn against lower league teams) - and scoring some great goals in the process! ..the one below, in particular - a superb, flowing, passing move starting with the 'keeper (vs. West Ham) - had the fans 'Olé-ing' and me kissing the screen with delight! ()

...bellissimo!

Keep me posted on how you guys are getting on!

Had an absolute nightmare yesterday evening. Playing Hull, 1-3 up and controlling the game, ended up losing 4-3... Needless the say the stress from that was too much, I couldn't figure out how they had changed in the second half to counter it.

George Friend scored the own goals of own goals, how Randolph couldn't pick a ball up that was right next to him is beyond me, once I figure out how to embed tweets, ill put the goal up... Terrible.

Still top by 4 points I think, Derby keep dropping points, which is helping me at the moment. Only about 16 or so games in. I will say though I think fatigue played a part as I played a round 5 carling/carabao/league/mickey mouse cup match that went all the way to penalties, so I think that had an effect second half on my team.

Which was annoying. Rotated the team as much as I could, but I have a relatively small team.

It's the first time I've had to just shut the game down to take a breather. Flat out on my sofa after that match haha!!

@Datasun_7 You can start as low as the National League North/South (6th tier) in England - perfect for those that want to try to chart a career from Non-League to (hopefully) Champions League!

@SuperJoon Haha! Yeah, the game is painfully, painfully cruel at times!

You can embed tweets by selecting 'Copy link to Tweet' on Twitter and just pasting the link here (it'll automatically embed it for you ) ..would be fascinated to see Randolph's clanger!

My back-up keeper last season (now transfer listed) made a couple of absolute howlers in my save - once failing to stop a simple backpass from rolling in - then attempting a Messi-like dribble, only to run in to trouble, get tackled and concede the softest of goals! (..2nd one perhaps my fault for asking a non-Sweeper Keeper to play the SK role - but the first was just plain abysmal 'keeping!) ..I forgot to record them unfortunately, but I can certainly sympathise when it comes to goalkeeping nightmares!

@NaviAndMii It was more of a defender/keeper clanger. George Friend wasn't being pressured to pass back, he could have hoofed it up the pitch, but he passed it right back to the keeper, who obviously wasn't paying attention. I had to laugh otherwise I would have cried. haha
