Good ol Meiers, I haven't seen one of those in so long since I moved to San Francisco from Michigan. When Switches first came out and sold out everywhere my brother said Meijers had some that no one knew about haha @DTMOF84

@Hyrule It is not a matter of storage It is a matter of principle I just can't buy a game on a cartridge that is useless (cartridge that acts like a half game that requires a download to be able to play)
It's no different on any other platform. You buy a PS4 or Xbox game, you then have to download a patch or update to play, not to mention copying the entire game to your hard drive. Say for Xbox, you have a 1tb hard drive, as soon as you hit 10 games or so, you're already running out of space. It's the reality of the gaming industry. Back to playing Doom now
@NEStalgia unfortunately that was the problem. Working third shift all night I figured it would be good to go to the closest store to get the game so I won’t be out of luck later when I wake up. He had three of them he tried scanning and couldn’t get it to ring up.
@Hyrule This is true for Xbox and PS4 but this should not be the case for Nintendo. You see Nintendo should offer better things because its consoles are far weaker.
That is why Nintendo should try and keep the games on the Switch playable off the cartridge.
I wanted so badly to go to the store in 1 hour (just after work) but I just can't if I am not sure. I have to wait some days to see if someone bought the game played it without the DLC Multiplayer and stuff.
@Hyrule@Zuljaras I the case of Doom, I think the compromise is excellent. In the case of all 3 2K games, it's an unmitigated disaster.
For Doom though, from what I understand, the game is fully playable off the cartridge. Just not multiplayer. But that's ok because multiplayer by definition requires patches and updates. Because of it's online nature, it's impossible to separate online play from download content (even Splatoon and Arms has regular patches...albeit small. Many games, like Uncharted 4 have MASSIVE (much too massive for my liking 17GB -25GB patches for multiplayer....some of that includes bonus modes/maps/content, some is DLC.) But even on Playstation, it's not required to complete the single player content.
So in this case, Doom is basically parity with the norm. Single player right on the card. Multiplayer after the large patch.
2K on the other hand is a different problem. The card contains nothing usable at all, just a download booster pack.
@NEStalgia If that is the case I will support Bethesda with Doom and Skyrim but there are many people claiming that they can't start Doom because they can't pass the Update (download) message.
You are right about those 2K games. They should not event be on cartridges. Just go all digital if you can't offer your product on the cartridge to be playable.
I was thinking that I could event settle for game to be on 2 cartridges for us to INSTALL on the switch and you need only the first one to play the game. Just like Diablo II when you need to insert CD-1 to play the game
Can somebody explain to me why the eshop version is so much more expensive, when the physical carts are so called expensive? After cancelling my pre order I now kinda want it. I get it’s MSRP, but when carts are meant to be expensive and I can get it £10 cheaper, it doesn’t make sense.
@imtom2002 Is the update message the default Switch one that you can just hit "Start Game" or is it one in the game's UI that tries to connect and fails without the patch?
Either way with airplane mode it's not a big deal to just hit it just to launch to avoid the patch. Especially since sleep mode means you can keep the game running and only have to do that again if you switch games.
@Zuljaras Of course we'll have to DL the patch if we want the inevitable framerate/audio fixes based on the NL review....those will be baked into the same download when available. And the patch being under 8GB isn't as extreme as what 2K is asking either. Average patches this gen for non-Nintendo games seem to average 1-5GB if they don't include any online add-on content and much larger if they do. Id rather the game didn't require airplane mode, but I'm ethically ok with the compromise path Bethesda has taken by separating online and offline content. If you're playing online, you'll be downloading tons of stuff anyway. It's the single player for which "playable from the cart" has meaning.
I'll find out all this for sure tonight of course. Whenever my copy arrives....
NBA 2K18 at least was playable from cartridge. And honestly even the quick match single games off cart, that alone could be an eshop game which trumps Playgrounds.
I fully support NBA 2K18. The game had a rocky start but it's literally the same game as every other console, full parity. Save files were reduced to 3gb, glitches were fixed, online play with friends patched in. Ya the game had a big download but eh, it's whatever. The game is what matters.
I think I'm finally getting past my physical dependence. Sure I still want carts but, so many games require patches nowadays you're basically screwed without a download anyways.

@NEStalgia I’ve only tried it the once when I first booted it up and like you said I’ve left it suspended when not playing. I’ve set the patch to download as well though so probably won’t see it again. 17gb used for Doom on storage now.
@NEStalgia That could well be the case, it was only halfway through the download. I’ll let you know when I get back. Just brought 128GB sd card so should be ok space wise for a while.
I will wait till it drops to $20. I expect that to happen quickly too. Just because the game is new on a certain console, that does not make it a new game worth a full price tag. Especially when that game is downgraded.
I am sure the game is still fun. But missing game mode, 30fps, and downgraded resolution and textures does not convince me to to spend $60 on the Switch instead of $20 on the PS4 version. Although playing Doom while dropping a deuce does sound enticing.
How many times you going to tell everyone you’re not buying it?
As many times as I feel. Here comes another one. I am not paying $60 for this $20 game.
@JaxonH I refuse to be screwed without a download. Cord cutting means spending more at times to get physical, without spending endlessly on subs. "I choose to buy unlimited bandwidth therefore everyone in the world should adopt broken products that you remedy yourself because for me it's not an issue" is the kind of thinking that got Mattrick fired It isn't and never will be acceptable to release a product that doesn't work. A 1-3GB patch is different from 14+GB downloads containing much of a game.
That said, I did NOT know NBA2k18 worked on the cartridge. That's not what I'd read. That's good news, in that 2K was pleased with NBA sales and I didn't want it to send the wrong message to other companies. Here's hoping L.A. Noire and WWE fail harder than the WiiU with the "the cart doesn't work AT ALL policy."
Bethesda gets my money. 2 games so far, and they're doing it right. If the get it right on Wolfenstein as well, I'll be back to pre-ordering Bethesda CE's which I'd given up a while back with their bugs
