Yes and no. I have no interest in The Last of Us 2 and it winning GOTY doesn't change that, nor am I angry about it winning - so in that sense I don't really care what wins. I mean, any event that has an award for 'Best eSports Host' clearly doesn't align with my tastes anyway. But with award shows as a whole, I do find it quite interesting seeing what the nominations are and finding out about games or other media that I didn't know about or may have overlooked before. It's also nice when indie games get recognition at these events, like Hades did this year and Celeste has done in the past.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
@Dogorilla Yeah that flow of information is what interests most people I figure, but would you or did you ever think "Oh that game won, now Im curious and want to try it." - if you didn't already know about that game up front?

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.
@Scollurio I don't think that has ever happened to me with the Game Awards, but that's because I follow gaming news fairly closely so there aren't usually any big winners that I haven't heard of. But if an indie game I hadn't heard of was nominated for some awards then I probably would be interested in checking it out. And when it comes to other media that I don't follow as closely, scrolling through the list of nominees for the Oscars, Hugo awards, etc I often find out about some interesting films or books that I hadn't heard of before. So I can imagine some casual gamers might do the same thing with the Game Awards.

They matter to me. I like it when a game I love and enjoy gets lots of awards. Makes me feel good about my purchasing the game. Although Blue Reflection getting best fan service made me chuckle.
The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.
what do you think the 'premiers' are...the whole three hour show was one long commercial
if this was really about 2020 games, we'd have had a nastalgic love-fest with tons of footage and interviews of winning games...hell, maybe the runners-up too...it would have been a show about looking backwards not forwards
these corporations have you so conditioned to look forward to their marketing cause you might hear an 'announcement'
you'd hardly know these GOTY games existed in a three hour snooze fest that was supposed to be all about them...don't pay attention to the ads?...so like, don't watch the awards at all
The more I think about the subject of "game of the year" the more uncertain it becomes. I feel like the awards show doesn't take enough into consideration and often ends up selecting a game that was already hugely popular. My thinking is that it needs to be less of a sizzle reel and more informative about their selection on why they chose the game. But i don't think that's a priority. Do they still give out an award for best gaming Youtuber? 'Cause that feels closer to their goal of marketing.

Give me a heads-up if you're going to send a request please.
Honestly, the only value award shows have is to showcase lesser known art and entertainment to a larger audience. I mean its nice when the winners reflect my own tastes, but I don't expect them to, nor does it especially tend to matter if they do or not. Otherwise, they might as well not exist.
I like The Game Awards to see if there's any premier trailers for games that I'm interested, and to see which games win which nominees. (Usually I just look it online after the fact, though)
Also, what would you guys say is the biggest gaming awards show, outside of TGA?
EDIT: I'm asking because, I'm finding more and more people saying that they feel that The Game Awards is becoming less about the celebration of gaming, and becoming more about "free advertising" and having a "bias" towards certain games or companies. (Kind of like the Oscars in a way)
Please give Ninjala a chance, guys. 🤔
As @Sunsy said,
Ninjala Gang FOR LIFE!
Also, if I don't respond to your post within a day (or two), don't worry, I'm not ignoring you. I'm going to be busy, though I will do my best to respond in a timely fashion.
I tune in for the world premiers and tune out the proceedings. However, I do respect Geoff Keighley's IRL hustle to put a show like TGAs together. Clearly the guy cares about the hobby and the gaming industry in general. But I don't doubt that his efforts are well compensated.
Couldn't care less about these shows. If it was about the games and a retrospective of the year, then I might be interested. The first (and last) one I watched was a lot of ads, too many of those streamers (that I guess I'm supposed to revere when I don't even know who they are) and too many announcements of stuff in the far off future. I've never watched it since.
Didn't feel like a celebration of gaming or that year in gaming at all. More like a spectacle of fluff.
I honestly only watch for the new game announcements and visual effects; I care little about who wins what. I didn't expect Nintendo to pull too many wins this year. The Sephiroth for Smash announcement was a nice surprise, the new Monster Hunter Rise trailer was welcome, and I do like the look of Scarlet Nexus. Shame I don't plan on getting an Xbox anytime soon. Outside of those things, most of the other announcements didn't really affect me.
