Hey folks. I was thinking. TLOU II is the GOTY, no surprise there. I was wondering, if Naughty Dog now expects this to boost sales. But, do "normies" even know about game awards? Does the "GOTY" sticker on the game's box matter?
As someone who can't remember ever basing any purchasing decision on an ad or voting for a political candidate because of some election-poster on the side of the road I'd define myself as relatively immune to advertising. Am I alone with this mindset?
I don't want to discuss the actual GOTY of this year or it's contents. Just in general. Do award shows have an influence on your buying decision and do you guys think that sticker on the box might entice "normies" out in the wild to buy the game (any GOTY really)?
Seeing how much effort and medial fanfare goes into these award shows I was wondering if they actually push the sales of the games involved that much.
Opinions?

"Do award shows have an influence on your buying decision ?"
My answer : Not at all
Who the heck cares if the games got labeled GOTY or not.
One game is GOTY for most peoples, for me probably is a rubbish and vice versa.
The games that i labeled as my GOTY are the games that already exceeding my expectations.
My GOTY in 2020 is Pretty Princess Party on Nintendo Switch.
Reason: because finally there is a girly game that has been released on Nintendo Switch and it made by Nippon Columbia, a Japanese developer with their cutesy and girly games collection from their releases.
And i will play that game in HD and also on my TV, exceeding my expectations.
@Anti-Matter You haven't actually played Pretty Princess Party? It seems strange to declare a game the game of the year if you haven't actually played it ;p
If it was a game that hadn't got that much exposure previously, and winning the award was the first time a lot of people heard of it, it would probably increase sales.
TLOU2 has already sold over 7 million copies, and had more exposure than 99% of other games. I doubt this award will have much impact on anything.
The games that win these awards tend to be big budget, high profile titles that all the casual players who only buy a few games each year would have already picked up so it's hard to see them getting much of a sales boost as a result. The smaller niche games that could potentially use the exposure have no chance of winning the award in the first with even if they are the best game.
Personally I don't pay any attention to these awards as the crowd that it's catered towards basically live in a completely different universe to me in terms of gaming tastes. As far as I'm concerned they're completely meaningless.
@jump
I have watched the gameplay of Pretty Princess Party Japanese version last year from Youtube.
From what i watched, it already exceeding my expectations.
If there weren't game reveals I imagine the audience for the show would be significantly smaller. It's no coincidence that even the awards feel like a publicity bump.

Give me a heads-up if you're going to send a request please.
To some extent, but not to the point that I'd buy a game solely because of a nomination. But this year's Game Awards for example have exposed me to some really neat games, such as Hades, and Ghost of Tsushima. These two are games that I am considering purchasing, and have began so before TGA, and will probably end up playing both because of their critical reception. It's a more streamlined process compared to looking at a game's Metascore, because a show like TGA highlights the best of the best. But the games I tend to buy are award winners, or mostly nominated anyways.
Thank you all for your answers so far. So you all seem to be of similar ilk than I am. But we're all "in the know". What about the "normies"? But they wouldn't even know about the award show to begin with I figure.
So, outside of ad revenue during the show and promoting upcoming titles, the awards themserlves, what's their purpose? So some execs can pat themselves on their back?
Is it really just that kind of indulgence? Because there most be some kind of return on investment for the game dev studios and those running the shows. If it would just be a glorious trailer show broken up with ads I figure it would do the exact same thing to most of us like it is right now.
Hm. Same with Oscars, I feel like the WORLD has long stopped caring...

They matter to me in the sense that I get suckered into watching the ad-space they've used me to create, with false hopes that a genuinely deserving team win an award.
Everything they actually show (ie ads) is 'coming soon' and overproduced hype-garbage with CG trailers. Meanwhile the quick clips they showed of Hades were washed out 5 nanosecond videos of nothing really. How do you drag an awards show out for three hours and not even give these games five minutes each? That's a lot of advertising guys.
They're just playing their own little game of pimps&hos. They even invited big brother hollywood along to show them how art is treated.
I'm not mad at the awards, I'm mad that I get used every year to create advertising space for the machine. It's my own fault, but I need a shower.

So the main reason your GOTY is pretty princess party is because it’s a girly game on the Nintendo switch and it’s from a Japanese game developer and it’s in HD. And you haven’t played it. 😀
By this point one has to wonder, does ANYONE really care about ANY AD anymore at ALL? I know, I don't. Never did but I'm at a point where when I'm watching some content on YouTube and it has a mid-vid-ad, I often quit the video altogether. I'm just "done". Also got rid of my TV years ago, normal programming is just awful. Can't stand any sort of ads.
Quit Netflix over Cuties but to be honest, besides Stranger Things nothing kept me there anyways. Even the short ads before many Amazon shows/movies for their own content are almost too much to bear for me already.
Walking in a bigger city is also complete sensory overload. All those ads don't even reach me, yet alone interest me. And don't get me started on social media.
Makes you wonder, if ADS in general DO work at all. Or people just go and buy what they want and marketing companies go like "SEE, SEE that revenue? WE did this!" lol. Or maybe what we THINK is our taste, is actually the ads doing their magic...
I need some forest now.
