I have a question its about a x box series s i know its not abiut nintendo but i have no one to ask. I have a alienware monitor with a hdmi 2.0 plug in the x box series s run at 120 hz i think and my monitor can run upto 240hz if i plug in a xbox series s to my monitor will i be able to run at 120 hz or lower and what would be my fps
@Alexpoles1469 The refresh rate (hz value) of your monitor is essentially how often the image updates and is independent of the hz value the console will output - it doesn't change to suit the signal received (unless it has Variable Refresh Rate - VRR)
For example, if your console could output 240hz you'd get a different frame every refresh on your 240hz monitor. For 120hz your monitor would show each frame twice and for 60hz each frame is shown 4 times and so on. Higher refresh on the monitor might look smoother because there is less chance the image is changing between refreshes.
The framerate will depend on the individual game - just because you console can output 120hz doesn't mean every game will be 120fps. The majority will likely run at (or at least target) 60fps, with some as low as 30fps maybe and some newer stuff at 120fps. I think Series S requires HDMI 2.1 on the monitor to use 120hz output though.
You could always plug it in and try - Xbox will automatically detect the screen, and if you go into the console settings menu it'll only let you select what your monitor or TV can handle. Mine won't let me select any screen resolution above 1080 for example as I'm connected to an old HD TV even though the console can do 1440 and I think the odd game can even do 4K. Even if you don't get the 120hz output it'll work just fine limited to 60hz output.
I got my Nintendo Switch working with a VGA computer monitor today.
Quite by accident.
I work from home every now-and-then. So I got a Dodocool Laptop Dock (DC74GY) so that with a single cable plugged into my laptop, that cable provides power and connections to the VGA monitor (so I have 2 monitors), USB keyboard / mouse / printer, and an RJ45 hardwired network cable.
So, I needed to charge our Switch, so I just plugged it into the Dodocool Laptop Dock to charge it. And then . . . the VGA monitor woke up with the Switch screen.
I had no idea that that would be possible. An old VGA monitor displaying the Switch screen. LOL.
The monitor is also capable of HDMI, so I can try that later to see if this Dodocool Dock passes the Switch screen through to HDMI. But the monitor does not have speakers, so I'd have to grab my downstairs monitor to test to see if the Dodocool passes sound through the HDMI cable. As it stands now, I use the audio out on the Dodocool Dock to output sound to a desktop speaker. As for VGA, I still use that because my KVM switch is old is VGA not HDMI.
