My question is similar. Can you download games on two Switch consoles paying once for each game if you use the same user account on both? Like on Xbox.
You can definitely already download games you own on a 2nd Switch, @BlueOcean .... You have 1 'primary' Switch, which is the 1st you signed in with
If they're playing on 2 devices, whether linked locally or online, @rsbhj, they each need a copy of the game. Alternatively, they can both play on one Switch, although that'd be easier on the current model & on TV But you'd still be able to use joy-cons with the Lite & play split-screen, if you really wanted to
@BruceCM So you can play digital games that you have bought once on two consoles then? I assume that you can't play them on both consoles at the same time so do you have to be online to play on any of them? On Xbox you don't have to be online on the "home" console but you have to be online on the other console.
Starting to think for the extra 80 each is better to just buy 2 switch consoles as least that way they can play together multiplayer on tv and when out and about can just play different games maybe just have to buy the most popular game twice.
Yeah you have to be online on the secondary console, @BlueOcean .... & can't play the same games on both simultaneously There is somewhere to deregister primary Switch, if needed, although I haven't had cause to actually find that
Yeah I opted for PS4 for kids last Xmas and held off for the switch to come out as hand held only instead of getting 2DS XL however didn’t expect it to be as expensive 60 more than 2DS xl but 80 less than switch console I think if they brought the lite out at maybe 165 mark it would seem more appealing
@rsbhj Yeah, sadly Nintendo seems to not want people to easily play multiplayer on the Lite. For your situation where multiplayer is big part of it, the OG Switch seems to be the better option. Not only for on-TV multiplayer, but it also has the kickstand tabletop mode they could use for multiplayer as well.
@rsbhj & @Cotillion, that's going by the information currently available... Given that Nintendo have said they're looking at the shared gameplay, maybe they'll adjust multi-player, at least for the Lites?
As it is, with MK8D, I enjoyed the game just in single-player mode, so there's enough content. There'd still be the online multi-player? I'm sure you could arrange races with friends that way, too?

Thanks. I can't believe that Nintendo is doing something right regarding accounts... Only problem you have to pay Nintendo Online for cross-save (cloud saves).
@BruceCM Current information is all we can use for sure. Nintendo may change something with shared play....then again they may not. And I doubt if they did change it that they would change it just for the Lites, though. There'd be quite an outcry from the 40million existing Switch users if only Lites could better share games.
I enjoy MK8D single player and online multiplayer as well, but @rsbhj has said that he has two kids that will want to play local multiplayer. Yes, with the Lite they could set up online matches to play together, but they'd need 2 copies of every game they wanted to play together, which would cost substantially more.
With current information, the OG Switch has the far better options for local multiplayer as it has on-TV, the kickstand and they will only need 1 copy of any game they want to play multiplayer.
Current Switches already have the share joy-cons option, @Cotillion ....While the Lites obviously don't We'll have to wait for any further announcements, though; just reminding people we don't really know that much
Definitely getting a lite as a second console. Not sure if I want yellow or the pokemon version. I wish the pokemon had the same color buttons. That's where my hang up is 🤔...otherwise I like it.
If buying two Switch consoles why not one standard and one Lite? You can also play tabletop mode with the Lite, you just need a stand (the Switch stand is rubbish anyway) and two joy-cons (bundled with the standard Switch) @rsbhj@BruceCM
Thanks for all the information. I doubt Nintendo will change anything after all its money for them if kids want the same games.
I had thought about the option on 1 switch console and 1 switch lite but I can only image the arguments on who get which one when going out and about portable...petty I know.
The issue is an easy fix Nintendo just need to allow multiplayer access on the same local network via a primary lite that can invite up to say 4 additional lites on the same network using the 1 game on the primary lite as a master.
Fair enough if they want to play individually I would expect to have to pay for an additional game, but for multiplayer and if they have friends round it should work as above!
Nintendo really should adjust and allow multiple switches to play digital game if on the same network. If I remember correctly certain 3ds games had this functionality, no? Has held me back from buying certain games at launch, Dragon Quest Builders 2 being the most recent.
