Topic: Breath of the Wild amiibo question newbie?

Ok I just got a switch and the new Zelda and a few amiibos before the prices went way up. But my question is, can a household of two people with two different switch systems use the same set/collection of amiibos? I'm a bit confused on this?

Thanks, Tibbi

Yes, you can. One of the purposes of amiibo is the ability to be able to use them with multiple consoles (as they are compatible with the 3DS, Wii U and now Switch).

The only downside to consider is if the software writes data to the amiibo. Data for only one game can be stored to a single amiibo at a time (which is only problematic if you do not want your amiibo's data overwritten by another user). However, BotW does not write any data to the amiibo, so this will not be a problem for you. You can use any amiibo from the Zelda series as often as you like between as many Switch consoles as you like with Breath of the Wild.

The use of amiibo is split into two categories:

  • Read only
This function will not write data to the amiibo, and the software will only "read" the amiibo (i.e. recognising precisely what type of amiibo it is, or simply recognise the fact that it is an amiibo). Feel free to use any compatible amiibo for "read only" functionality as it will not alter your amiibo's data.
  • Read/Write
This function will write data to the amiibo that you can later recall by tapping the same amiibo in the same software. An amiibo can only store data for one game at a time. You can continue using the same amiibo for "read only" functions in any other software, but if there is another game in which the amiibo is compatible with "read/write" functionality, then it will overwrite the data that is currently stored on your amiibo (amiibo data is software specific, not console specific).

Amiibo data can also be deleted at any time in the amiibo option under "Settings" if you wish to effectively restore it to factory settings.

BotW does not rewrite, so anyone can use them. All they do is give you stuff in game.
