"Prehistoric Isle 2" for Neo Geo is now available on the eshop. I've never played this one before, a shmup with dinosaurs. You rescue people and shoot it out with prehistoric beasts. It's extremely awesome!

I'm a noob in these games. I mean, I've been scarcely playing them since I was 5 starting with Galaga, but never went too deep into them and I'm not good.

So, on Switch right now I have Aero Fighters 2 and plan on buying Blazing Star. I'm not interested in Pulstar, since it's too similar (or so I heard) to R-Type. So what others would you people recommend me?

Also, I'd like to know if any of the Arcade Archives ones, the older, the almost 8-bit (or downright 8-bit) ones, are worth it. Like Omega Fighter and the like.

Dragon Blaze is excellent. I love all the Psikyo shmups.

In terms of older, I've always liked Star Force, Terra Cresta fits your description too

Hi, we are OnionGaems!

Why don’t you play a Japanese still unknown indie game?

Do you know BLACK BIRD?
“Toho Project? Ikaruga? These are not everything! Gamers who love bullet hells, loved shmups before, may love BLACK BIRD!”
There are tons of factors which remind you old Japanese retro shmups such as “Fantasy Zone”, “Twin-Bee” and “Section Z”

To expand this game, it’s supported Chinese(simplified & traditional)!
Please contact us if you want to review this game! (not only people who speak Chinese but everyone)

It sells well in the Japanese market, but not been known well in the Western market yet!
You can reach an ending in several hours, but this game makes you want to play again and again!
It’s absolutely fun, so we want shmup lovers outside of Japan to play BLACK BIRD!

So, recently, I have started to look into SHMUPs thanks to Touhou Project (Although I haven't played any).

But when I'm looking around, it didn't seem like Touhou is ever talked about in the SHMUP community itself? Which made me wonder:

Does Touhou is just isn't counted as one in the community? Why though? Is it because of the difficulty or what?

Sorry if this is oot though

Black Bird's on my radar. Seems like a really great and detailed shooter.
And I still want to pick up Steredenn and Ikaruga physical.

I got Tikipod's Aqua Kitty UDX which is a modernized, cutesy version of the two horizontal shooters Defender and Uridium. Recommend it. On that note, Tikipods other game, the twinstick-shooter Rock Boshers DX is excellent! (have high hopes for their third game Iron Crypticle as well.)

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a rarely mentioned Bullet Hell Shmup that I would give my vote to for best Switch Shmup. I've been dabbling more into games where you somewhat form the difficulty for yourself. Danmaku Unlimited 3 fits the bill, with it's emphasis on throwing yourself into risky scenarios, for a greater score. Your score multiplies, depending on how many bullets you have consecutively grazed around. Music is fun and it looks great for a vertical shooter.

Astebreed is another recommendation of mine, as long as you can get past whatever the hell the story is talking about. It's defined as a futuristic shmup since the camera will constantly move to switch between being a 2D Shooter and a 3D Shooter.

I'm more and more interested in this genre, and this week I plan on buying Hyper Sentinel, which is about half euro in the Russian eShop.

I also have, as I mentioned some time ago, Aero Fighters 2, and thanks to SNK 40th Anniversary Collection I got Prehistoric Isle too, which I loved, and I'm going for the sequel for sure. Still haven't bought Blazing Star, though.

Recently Moon Cresta was launched on Switch after years as a PS4 exclusive. What do experts here can tell me about this one? Is it as dated as some pages put it?

And I still would like opinions on other 8 bit shooters available in Arcade Archives.

Great thread, we are currently fundraising to get our Iridium shootemup game on the NintendoSwitch link here https://tinyurl.com/yb92z6jx .

Our focus though right at this time is investigating the costs of making physical versions.
For the moment might also look into those suggested titles as I'm a big fan of shootemups too.

In case anybody missed it and is looking through this thread for recommendations, R-TYPE Dimensions came out a couple of months ago. R-TYPE is, in my opinion, one of the greatest shooters of all time, and I wouldn't argue if anyone wanted to say it IS the GOAT. At least one version of this game should be in every shmup fan's collection, and Dimensions includes it and R-TYPE 2 which is also fantastic.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

I can definitely also recommend Black Bird, it's really great game similar to Fantasy Zone.

The Switch shmup i'd recommend the most to Bullet Hell fans is Psyvariar Delta, it offers a ton of modes and features. It's currently on sale on the JP eShop.

I'm also really hyped for Darius Cozmic Collection which comes out in Japan this month.
I hope people support thid release, because with both Taito and M2 being involved, it could be very important for the future on shmups on the Switch.

There’s a couple on sale now I just picked up. Sky Force Reloaded and the other Sky Force that’s on there.

Thanks for the tip DTMOF84, Sky Force is an excellent shootemup

@DTMOF84 Cool. I already own both SKYFORCE titles. Reloaded on Switch and Annuversary across PS3/Vita. My vague recollection puts Reloaded as the superior of the two but both fun.

I haven’t played either one too much yet. But reloaded does seem more polished.

I got AngerForce: Reloaded this weekend, coming off its "9" review here, and played it a bunch. It's pretty good, but it's no SkyForce: Reloaded. The visuals felt more like the unheralded FullBlast (one of the few Wii U shmups), and with the small screen, it just seems inferior to SkyForce: Reloaded in just about every respect. The sound track is very good, and I appreciate that there is an upgrade system at work, but just not the "Excellent" experience I was hoping for (so far... about 3 hours in). Anyone dive in on AngerForce?

Asphalt 9 / Siege Engine FTW

VegasKeith

@bluedogrulez I picked it up as well. Had been looking forward to it for awhile before release. Right now I would also have to give the edge to Reloaded. I'll put a lot of time into it, though. Any sort of skills progression or upgrades feature will usually keep me around.

Gunbird 2 is my favourite.
