In that line I wish Pokémon would someday start to do the same as Digimon concerning rep, given there is (I think) a large LGBT fanbase.

Pokemon is big enough that, pretty much by default, it probably has more LGBT fans than nearly anything else in entertainment.

@hyperballad Pokemon actually does have one gay character, just can't remember who it is.

Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don't Dry has a whole section where you have to arrange a gay wedding, help one of the two men come to terms with his sexuality and get them back together after falling out. It was a really sweet scene actually and surprisingly respectful for LSL! And they are married by a drag queen!

You can view it on a YouTube play through if you don't fancy buying it.

Would be great to see it on the list given almost all the games on it only lesbian, bisexual and trans at the moment. As a gay man it's the only storyline like that I've related to or felt invested in but I might try some of the others on the list.

@hyperballad Pokemon SwSh actually scores pretty well in nonbinary representation just by not asking anything about your gender and eschewing pronouns altogether, as well as having several characters who are very vaguely gendered. It's not much, but that old "are you a boy or a girl?" was highly dysphoric for a lot of enbies. Progress has been made.

@JasmineDragon Does it? I know they got rid of that question but I thought the player character was still referred to by gendered language and pronouns throughout the game.

Animal Crossing New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure make no reference to the player's gender at all, which is good. In ACNH the other villagers actually refer to the player using singular 'they'.

Also, this isn't really LGBT representation but I like how Mario can wear a wedding dress in Odyssey and Luigi comments on it as if it's perfectly normal ('Bro, why didn't you invite me to the wedding?' or something like that).

@KateGray Question: since Olive Town has been patched and most complaints addressed…any thoughts on revising your review score?

As you can see I am trying to get Olive Town added to your list lol.

@Ryu_Niiyama It's on my list of things to do! But my list of things to do is about a mile long already 😅

Also, if anyone's wondering why I haven't added new games to the LGBTQ+ list yet — I will, but right now I'm steering clear of the article for my own wellbeing and mental health! The team are handling it excellently, I just need a break to write about crabs and Bidoof for a bit

@KateGray Oh I totally understand. I’m just actually staying on topic with the article and scrolling right past the “your existence is political/FrEe SpEech/what about the straight people/if you don’t let me question your existence YOU are the bigot/representation doesn’t matter if I don’t like it”logical fallacy-fu that is going on. Somebody started posting christian doctrine quotes which considering this is an English language site took longer than I expected.

I keep a simple policy. If I am not actually voting on something or discussing something that can impact voting then I let those people be. They are just looking to keep people from being positive and to keep folks off topic in hopes that comments get shut down.

@Dogorilla TBH I don't really remember it myself as I only played a couple of hours of SWSH before I was distracted by other games. Pokemon isn't really my thing, I bought it mostly for my kids. But I remember it being talked about in enby circles, IIRC the other characters just refer to you by name and you can wear whatever you want in it.

On a personal level I do count Mario Odyssey as supportive for trans/enby people because of that wedding dress. Again, not a game I played for hundreds of hours, but you better believe I had Mario running around in his dress for a while. I also played most of BOTW wearing my pretty pretty outfit and only changed when I absolutely needed to. I appreciate games like this even if they are not openly trans-supportive, at least they allow you to mix up your presentation and absolutely no one cares about it in the game.

@KateGray Don’t blame you for wanting to stay away. If only for the fact that it’s almost crashing the site.

@KateGray I was going to ask you the same thing as Ryu Niiyama, if you haven't had a chance to play Olive Town again I do recommend it. Not specifically to upgrade its score, but just because it's definitely a better game after the patches. Plus, now it has Marian and Giorgio in it.

But yes, please stay away from the main article's comments for your own mental health. I regret ever looking at the comments, personally.

You are loved and appreciated, don't let them get you down.

@JasmineDragon what a lovely and kind thing to say! Thank you!

Seriously, thanks to all of you. You can definitely expect more LGBTQ+ content from me as well! And crab stuff too, obviously. Maybe one day I can combine the two.

@JasmineDragon I may be misremembering but I thought there were a few instances in SwSh where my character was referred to as 'she', 'girl', etc. Which is fine because I am a girl but it's not ideal for enby people.

But yeah it is less gender-specific than previous Pokémon games. I appreciate this trend in recent Nintendo games where they don't ask for your gender because it doesn't actually matter as much as what you want the character to look like. I think the Sims does something similar too, where you can mix and match conventionally male/female body traits regardless of gender.

Isn't that a scene in Moana?

At the same time being referred to as "they" all the time isn't ideal for male and female players. I am not non binary and don't use non binary pronouns.

Maybe Nintendo should have Male, Female or Non Binary/Other options and the pronouns should change accordingly? 🤔

Eel

That reminds me of some Harvest Moon games, that use "them" to refer to all your farm animals. Including the ones that are clearly most definitely female

I dunno how correct it is in that context.
