@RetroGamerAndrew I think it's the throw of the stick. My favorite is the Seimitsu LS-40 (a.k.a. the NEOGEO stick they used in their cabinets). It's great for both fighting games and shmups, it's surprisingly all-purpose, IMHO. I want to drop one into the HORI RAPV if I could, it'd be a great match for all these retro games!

I've asked this before but be good to also ask again seeing as we're talking arcade sticks. For the layman who just wants a bit more of that arcade feel would you recommend the Hori Arcade Stick for Switch. I think it was £150 at launch last year and still about £100 now. I don't see myself opening it up and swapping out parts but would put the cash down if folks think it offers a good arcade control experience?

I'm also gonna get round to picking up one of those table top stands that allow the Switch to be held and played in TATE orientation. I was even tempted to get one of those amusing little arcade cabinet hard cardboard kits which house the Switch display in its standard widescreen position. The redness of the materials used screams of Neo Geo MVS, ha! ha!

Anyone else seen these pieces of kit and am I being a fool for thinking about picking all this up? Be honest, I do get carried away with my little follies.

@Lroy I've been thinking the same as you for ages. I might just go for the 8-bitdo arcade stick and the SF30 pad instead though. I've been meaning to order one of those cabinets as well for months now but I was worried that once it's put together I won't be able to take it apart again. I will be flying back to my home in Thailand in the next couple of weeks so I might just take one flat packed and assemble it once I'm there. I've seen these stickers I think will look great on it. If you buy 10 you get 50% off so together with postage they only come to around £15.

@Lroy
I suppose you're talking about this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch-Arcade-Hayabusa-Offi...
Which, in turn, seems to be the last iteration of the Hori RAP4 (my stick): https://www.amazon.co.uk/PS4-Real-Arcade-Pro-Kai/dp/B00RZ7T8N6/

They features the same components, Hayabusa buttons & stick: the construction is solid and sturdy, buttons are very, very sensitive (really, they get triggered by anything more than a graze), maybe the Hayabusa stick has a little too much throw as masterLEON also suggested, but it's quite good so it's no big deal. Anyway, don't be afraid to open the box and swap components if you feel the need, it's totally fool-proof.
As far as arcade sticks are concerned I suggest you to try one before buying to see if you like the overall feel... that said I think you can't go wrong with that stick.

@Lroy I have a Hori stick and for me it's great (especially for beat-em-ups!). Some joysticks have a stiffness you have to wear out for it to feel comfy but I didn't have any issues with this stick.

@masterLEON I'll definitely try the Seimitsu LS-40 then, thanks for the suggestion!

I've managed to get 200k by the end of level 2...now I need to be able to complete level 3! Lol.

@masterLEON I played on a Pro controller. I tried a fight stick and found drawing the stick to move took away from my reflexes, and the shorter thumb stick let me react faster and get into tighter spots easier.

I alternated between Rapid fire - almost always on max spread, so it was a test of fatigue on my button arm - and charge shot when applicable. The rapid fire helped me find more destructible environments and let me push for positioning on the scrolling side of the screen. I found that a more spread shot was less effective in Level 2, enemies fell to charge shots quicker and 1/3 - 2/3 rapid fire spread was more effective.

I landed 77-78K by end of Level 1, but couldn't manage to fill the deficit in Level 2. Just didn't have enough time to study replays and figure out where I was leaving points behind.

Getting ready for AF2 tho!

Thanks for the feedback regarding the Offical Switch HORI arcade stick and related paraphernalia. Looks like I'll be saving some pennies for my follies then 🍻

I played PULSTAR pretty much 80% docked, playing on big screen using Switch Pro Controller. I tend to play Handheld far more usually but just so happens 2018 so far has afforded me more access to the TV during the evenings which is typically unheard of in my house ☺️

I don't want to alarm anyone... but having a quick burst at lunch with Aero Fighters 2 I noticed the top the top scores are over half a a million points.

@Shiryu I know, insane. I've barely managed 150, 000 approx on my first couple of runs.

Does the order in which you get the levels help or hinder? I've had the same first level but then the order of level 2 and 3 seems to be changing from run to run (I know the main game selects levels in random order correct?).

Then of course there's the large pilot/vehicle roster which offers more variation between each run.

@Shiryu I'm pretty sure our "TOP GUNS" will reach (and eventually obliterate) those scores

@RetroGamerAndrew @Lroy This one will be trickier than Pulstar due to indeed the randomization of levels 2 and 4 (yes, you will have to somehow reach level 4 in 5 minutes to get that high!) and the fact you have 8 different weapon sets to chose from. That is a lot of combination variables to make a perfect run. Lordy, lordy, what have we got ourselves into...

Bit late to the party, but congratulations Grail! It ended up being about 10.000 more than I thought was possible when first getting into this competition, and looking at that video, I'm confident that someone with razorsharp reflexes as well a the ability for precision play might actually be able to get 190.000 and top it. 200 might be a bit much, but it might be possible I think.
Not for me though as some of those moves in masterLEON's video made me go: yeah, no way in hell am I able to play with so much precision. lol Certainly not for a prolonged amount of time. Unless I spend the next couple of weeks or even months playing it non-stop and get to know the games pixels inside and out, like I used to do back in the early 80's.

Love the choice of Aero Fighters 2 and I was secretly thinking I would pick that one late last night even though I said I wouldn't pick one at all since I'd prefer getting to know a game that I haven't put much time into.
So when playing Samurai Aces before going to bed, I was reminded of how Psykio was formed by the people who made the Aero Fighters series. Not quite sure who brought this to my attention a couple of weeks back. I think it was Lroy...
Since it's one of the games that I certainly played back in the day.
Sonic Wings on Super Famicom and Sonic Wings Special on the Sega Saturn, it's one of the series that never really clicked with me as some of my favourites did over the years.
So I'm glad to be able to get the know the game much more intimately this way as Pulstar has shown.
This whole contest has a way of making me appreciate the games a ton more than before, so I'll gladly keep participating.
Would love to see a Pinball contest as well to be honest, especially for the Pinball Arcade.
Although one week might be a bit to short to actually learn a table in any meaningful way.
For instance, I'm at about 25hours on the Switch version of Stern Pinball Arcade and at least 20 hours of those had me playing Ghotsbusters. And it's only been this last week that I've felt that I finally got a really good grasp on the table. Even though I still haven't been able to beat Gozer, nor have gotten to "We're ready to believe you!". So yeah, a good table takes quite a bit of time to learn, which is why I love pinball so much I guess.

As for the arcade stick.
I'm using the red Hori Switch stick from above and I'm really happy with it.
It doesn't have any flaws as far as I'm concerned.
Although, the more I play it, the more I feel like I might end up modding it with Sanwa buttons and a stick like all my other sticks.
But that might just be since I'm used to how those feel and not because it would affect my play in any way.

The only stick I feel like not even modding is the PS4 Hori Vewlix one from Taito. That one is simply perfect out of the box for me. No issues at all. Actually, I'd want that one to work on all my systems, from the Famicom up to the Switch.
That being said, if you're not overly picky, like I seem to be, I don't think you'll ever have a problem with the regular Hori Switch one.

@Shiryu
Ouch... That's why it might be a good idea to hear which ship people prefer to play as, get some kind of consensus going and then all use that one for this content? Just a thought.

Oh and this might interest some people here.
I'm subscribed to The Arcade Blogger website and this just now popped into my mailbox:
https://arcadeblogger.com/2018/02/16/high-score-arcade-marath...

"High Score was the original Classic Arcade Gaming documentary. It came out in 2006, and charts the journey of Classic Arcade player Bill Carlton as he tries to take down the then 20-year-old Missile Command marathon high score, held by Victor Ali. This week on the blog, you can watch it for free in your browser!"

Quite appropriate I think.

@Shiryu Just remember, things like the tanks that drop the yen tokens. Shoot them and collect them at the top of the screen and they are worth 10k each. If you collect them half way down the screen they are worth 200! I got level 1 down to 100k.
I'm game for beating that 1/2 mil score!

@GrailUK Ahhh, thanks for the tip! That explains why I'm always getting 10k for the one on top of screen. Maybe I'll do better than 52000 on level one.
