I started playing S2 around the end of 2020 and it still feels new to me. Never cared about the fest events. Still going through the Octo DLC and having too much fun with the online modes also. I know a lot ppl started playing and buying the game around mid 2018/2019, since 2017 Switches were just too hard to get a hold of.
Splatoon 3 just looks too much like a rehashed code of Splatoon 2 but with new DLC. I always thought they would change the "look" similar to the art director's Twitter illustrations (this would remove the shiny slippery texture of the game to match his style but still 3D) to make it feel new. Cel shading would be cool to see also. With such a big Q4 and so many options I don't feel excited about Splatoon 3 as I did during reveal :/
Not really, only the third game in 7 years. The series has been a huge success since its inception so I don't blame Nintendo on making more of what works. I think the new areas and weapons make it different enough from Splatoon 2.
@KryptoniteKrunch Every time I see a thumbnail of Splatoon 3 on articles I always assumed it was for S2 lol. It'll b a while before I get this one. Might get it 3 years down the line. I'll wait till they release everything for it, DLC etc.
I do agree I wish it was at least showcasing more of what makes it different from 2, but the timeline does not feel too soon at all. This has taken longer than it did to go from Halo 1-3, or COD 1-4, or Mario 1 to World etc.
It is, I think we can all agree with that, but it’s happening so might as well. Also when is it meant to come out again? Because I was gonna get live a live, but ai think I’m going to get this instead.
I think it's moreso because it's on the same system rather than anything else. The gap between 1 and 2 was significantly shorter by comparison (and even if you were to compare when 2 got it's last major update to when 3 was revealed, it's still more or less the same timeframe) and, in the realm of competitive shooters, 5 years between a new numbered entry is staggering. Then again, Splatoon is anything but your typical competitive shooter so maybe my perception is a bit skewed, I wouldn't be able to tell to be honest. I for one have been waiting for extremely patiently for a new entry ever since I first played 2 back in August 2020 and lost my collective **** when 3 was announced all the way back in February 2021.
Currently MIA for exams; see you all in a bit! o7

Well...kind of. The Switch already got Splatoon 2 five years ago, and I'm pretty worried that Splatoon 3 would play things too safe. Especially considering that S3 will also be on the Switch. Hopefully, it will turn out better than I think, but for now, I'm not very excited for it.
@1UP_MARIO Well, at least with Splatoon 2, it came out on a console that people actually bought. While Splatoon 1 did sell well for a Wii U exclusive, the Wii U itself didn't exactly fly off shelves, as we know. But yeah, I'm sure Splatoon 3 will do pretty well, too. I've seen some people express excitement for the game, after all.
I've put over 1,000 hours into Splatoon 2 but have barely touched it in recent years (since Splatfests ended basically) so I'm super ready for a new entry. Five years between is plenty long enough.
5 years isn't exactly too soon, but we still haven't seen enough of Splatoon 3 to really justify it being a whole new game. Nintendo doesn't normally release more than one entry in multiplayer series on a single system (except Mario Party) and I can't imagine they'd break that unspoken rule just to add a few new weapons and stages, so hopefully there's a lot of new features they haven't shown us yet. Not sure why they're taking so long to do it though.
@Dogorilla I think having it release on the same console makes it feel too soon, but then again nothing too much has interested me so far. Same modes, same coverage of the same weapons, same look, etc. The fact not much new has been shown has me worried that this might be their first milked game to ride off the success of the 2nd. 2 months left and more of the same so far.
Showing 2 never seen weapons a week (hoping for Super Scope), more gameplay on new stages, more modes, advanced customization (I would love to change the colors of what I'm wearing, weapons too!) would get me to buy day 1! Also worried about server issues when it comes out. So waiting to get it seems like the way to go for me.
As for the question, I don't think it's too soon personally. A few other games from Nintendos 2017 lineup are also getting sequels soon. I started playing Splatoon 2 right around the time they stopped doing splatfests so I'm excited to dive into this one earlier 😅
I personally felt Splatoon 3 was too soon since they announced it. Every time I see or hear anything about it, I don't really feel as if they have added much over Splatoon 2, but then again, if people think there is enough new content, then so be it.
On another level, I think I am indifferent to Splatoon 3 also because I no longer have online; when Splatoon 1 and 2 came out, online was free. I did pay for NSO initially, but since the expansion pass, I haven't bothered, as I am still not convinced Nintendo is actually going to improve the online play. This is a very personal reason for not caring of course.
@Vivianeat At this stage I do agree, but I have a feeling there'll be a big Splatoon Direct before launch, so I'll reserve judgement for now. At the very least there's that single-player mode from the very first trailer with the little Salmonid companion - we still don't know what that's about.
No, not really. I got S2 close to when it came out, which was almost 5 years ago. I think the reason why S3 feels too soon is because of the Octo Expansion pack. I am honestly kinda bummed they switched it up and instead of S3 releasing this summer, it would be coming late fall to winter (it could be just me though because I don't really care for the Xenoblade series).

I'm of the view that it's not too soon but not enough has been shown off yet to distinguish it from Splatoon 2 which gives the perception that adding the content to Splatoon 2 instead would've been more fitting. That said, I imagine once the inevitable Splatoon 3 Direct happens it being a sequel will make more sense.
