@KidRad
Yeah, those situations that were shown were ridiculous. It seems to me that nintendo doesnt really understand how to approach the current market.
Nintendo fans like me will buy this console sooner or later just to play those certain exclusives. However, being a nintendo fan is not easy. Nintendo doesnt seem satisfied with its fanbase, they try to reach other people, like retirement home residents who like to play bowling once a week ☺.
If I wasnt a nintendo fan I wouldnt even consider the switch at all. What for? There is more powerful gaming consoles out there which have stable third party support. Why should hardcore gamers consider it. Being a hardcore gamer doesnt mean you have to play all time, carrying your gaming everywhere with you. Its about a powerful console that provides you with the games you like.
Realistic or not. A trailer is like an ad. I think people not to identify with it in some way. Its like, wow, thats totally awesome, I can continue playing my home console game on the go when walking the dog. Or wow, I will be able to take the switch to parties and show off how awesome mario is. I know this trailer was meant to show what the switch can do but was anything about the possibilietes REALLY that awesome? The only positive thing I see is that nintendo will put all their gamea on just one console. But this is from the perspective of a nintendo fan who will no longer need to buy two consoles, just one. Judging from the perspective of a non nintendo gamer, I doubt this will make them buy the thing. As always ita the games that sell systems.
@Therad
That video hinted at the gaming experience. It was in no way meant to be taken at face value. It advertised a new level of gaming. The ps4 was introduced as the most powerful console and much more userfriendly than the xbox one, gamers were sold and sold extremely well. The switch reveal showed real life situations, which are being ridiculed. Nintendo tried to show they are no longer aiming at kids but young adults, hipters if you will. They did a good job of introducing key features of the switch but will these be system sellers.
I am not sure why young adult xbox or ps gamers should need this thing.
@Andrzej777 Wait, what? So, now is everyone in their mid 20s to early 30s considered a hipster? I thought that title was only reserved to people with long beards in a Starbucks.
The reveal trailer was fine. Yeah, those situation will almost never happen like that in real life, but they did show what the system is capable of, and that's what matters. It got the message across.
If you want to sell a product to people under 20 you advertise to the age bracket above them. Because kids and teenagers want people to think that they're mature for their age. There were people in their early 20s in this ad for sure but that doesn't mean it just appeals to those people. Sure younger kids won't really relate to the people in the ad much at all. But teenagers? I think they'd want to see themselves in this ad more than probably any other group.

I have a mixed opinion about the Switch. One one hand I think the true console gaming on the go is a blessing from Iwata-dono himself as I am a reluctant handheld gamer. I game on handhelds because the games are there but I hate gaming on handhelds. This is a direct solution for people like me as handheld devs have no choice but to dev for the Switch. I also like the young adult/adult marketing focus as I'm sure it will attract more sales and get 3rd parties to come onboard and STAY. Also since I am in that marketing demographic (even though it doesn't feel like it sometimes) it was nice to see commercials with people that looked like me and my friends. I like the size and the controller options and the switch to cartridge is also appealing to me. I am a fan of much of Nintendo's design choices and this is no exception.
However, I am a gamer that liked motion controls, asymmetrical gaming and dual screen gaming. All appear to be casualties to the Switch's gritty ocean net. I greatly enjoyed having ds games on the wiiu (for above reasons) and was hoping for 3ds VC eventually. That is likely a pipe dream at this point. I am concerned about street pass and wondering if that may not make it over to the switch due to the home console focus. They aren't mutually exclusive but the designers may forgo it if they want the system to be home console first and portable second instead of a equal balance between the two.
I am optimistic if nothing else then for the hope that a boom in sales means that Nintendo will revive older franchises and put out more varied iterations of current franchises (not knocking recent releases...just hoping for more).
I am excited for the potential of the system and what it will likely mean for Nintendo's bottom line. However the return to lowest common denominator gaming means we will have to sacrifice a few of Nintendo unique feature sets.

I agree the reveal lacked a lot but complaining an ad doesn't show realistic situations is a weird complaint. They are showing you console features and over exaggerating them to more clearly show you what the system can do.
I was expecting more software but we didn't get anything. We saw Splatoon, Mario Kart, and a 3D Mario game but no confirmation those will be games release for the system, they were probably tech demos. Even Bethesda won't confirm Skyrim for the Switch and that is one of the games most people care about in that trailer.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
@DefHalan
We are pretty close to launch all things considered so the lack of info on content is annoying. But to play the devil's advocate for a second. This was just a 3 min trailer that has has gone down well. Both in terms of the amount of views/coverage and the tone of the response. It's all pretty positive and, unlike the Wii U reveal, pretty much everyone understands the concept.
In 3:37 they managed to create a video that was shareable. Using no words they explained the concept and made it immediately obvious what the appeal was. They made it clear how the dock generally works and the various ways you can use the removable controller sections. They showed a new game every 30 seconds or so and they were all fairly different games. They hit all the right notes
Of course we want more but the trailer itself? I think it's the best bit of advertising Nintendo have done since the Wii. Hell, it's one of the best bit of gaming advertising since the Wii full stop. Second maybe to the "used games" bit that Sony did at E3 a few years ago.
@skywake it was decent advertising but I think the biggest issue was they put hardware before software. They also announced they won't be ralking software until next year (or at least a later date, can't remember the exact text of the article) so we don't have anything to go off of other than this one trailer. I would have preferred some sort of software confirmation, and I think Bethesda's reaction to the Switch trailer is very telling

Although I agree that Bethesda's reaction was a bit unexpected. It's probably NDAs and all of that. I can't imagine Nintendo showing a game that wouldn't end up being playable on the system. That's false advertisement, which has happened before. But there's no reason to put Skyrim in that trailer, when they could've put any other game in it. I'm sure that we'll learn more about it in 2017.
@DefHalan
I get the scepticism but I don't share it. Sure we're fairly close to release so it'd be nice to actually get some confirmed games for the thing. But the stuff shown in the ad? Between the decent communication of the concept itself we got 6 pieces of software. Not confirmed but it was obvious what all those games were. And they are all games that either will or do exist. None of it was Wii U reveal trailer Zelda demo territory
I'd agree that Skyrim is probably the least likely of the games shown to become a Switch game. But I still think it's all but confirmed. Not only did Nintendo clearly work with Bethesda to get footage for the trailer. Which is big. But that image of software partners included Bethesda. Where there's smoke there's usually fire.
Zelda? It's confirmed as a thing already. Splatoon and Mario Kart? Those are easy ports and if they weren't being ported then they wouldn't have been different. Mario? Well that was already well and truly on the cards. The Basketball game? A dime a dozen, didn't the Wii U get one of those? Which leaves Skyrim as the odd one out. And why would they put Skyrim on there if it wasn't a thing?
@skywake the smoke to me is not the game being in the ad, there were games advertised for the Wii U that never made it, the smoke is the fact Bethesda won't confirm anything and Nintendo hasn't announced Mario Kart, Splatoon, or a 3D Mario game for the Switch. We saw Zelda and tech demos. I am not excited for a machine that has no software I am interested in. I am getting Zelda on my Wii U unless the Switch can actually sell me on the system before it comes out.

@DefHalan This isn't the only trailer we'll see for the Switch before launch. Even the Wii U had around 30 retail games available at launch. I don't really care about what games were shown (I mean, apart from the fact that they were working with Bethesda and Take-Two). Software will come undoubtedly at a later point. If we don't get any new info until March, yeah, then I'd be worried too. However, there's still enough time for Nintendo and any other dev to reveal games.
As a Nintendo fan I am super excited for the Switch! The portable aspect of the system is not a huge draw for me. It is just too big for a business traveler as myself to keep on me. I love having my 3ds and being able to slip it in a jacket pocket or my pants and get Streetpass a the airport and then play some quick games.
All of my friends who are casual Nintendo fans were underwhelmed by the reveal. Overall Nintendo is going to need to revamp their network, probably add some sort of achievements, and find ways to entice third party developers to stick around and not bolt months after launch.
And I have to wonder, how much software they will have ready to announce. If they aren't ready to announce software until 3-ish months before the system releases.
@DefHalan
I think we're too close to launch to brush them all off as tech demos. This trailer is about as close to the launch of the Switch as E3 2006 was to the Wii launch. And in that trailer for the Wii? They showed Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Super Mario Galaxy, Pilotwings, Metroid Prime, WarioWare, Red Steel and Twilight Princess.
So lets break that down because there are some parallels. Like the trailer for the Switch all of them looked like games that were more ore less complete. The trailer explained the concept well and also introduced the software. All but one ended up being released as you'd expect given the showing in the trailer. The only one that didn't (Pilotwings) launched later as part of another game (Wii Sports Resort). And the majority were launch games. The remaining two appeared within the year.
As I said, I get the scepticism but I don't share it.

@skywake and you don't have to share it. I don't remember E3 2006, so I can't comment on the Wii trailer. I also don't know what software had been confirmed before then. Even if all those games weren't confirmed before that video (which I kinda doubt) Nintendo was at least talking about software. We aren't going to be getting any software announcements until 2017. If the Switch launches March 31st, then they have 3 months to announce and show off their games. We will see what happens.
