I just set up my old launch switch for my son with a custom account and plan on giving it to him for his 6th birthday. I set up the Nintendo family controls so it is locked down as far as I know for both time and content. I was wondering if anyone had good recommendations for young kids games. Preferably educational. We do PBS kids on the ipad sometimes and he has occasionally played mario kart but still needs some assistance there. Thanks.
If your kid gets better at Mario Kart, I would say Smurfs Kart is not a bad choice. Solid racing game based off the cartoon, and could be fun for a kid. Yoshi's Crafted World, it's a platformer with Yoshi in it. Yoshi games tend to be on the easier side. Same with Kirby Star Allies, though I've only played a demo of it. I'd recommend giving the demo to Kirby Star Allies a try.
Maybe @Anti-Matter could be of help here, he plays a lot of games that are aimed at kids, so he might have some suggestions.

When I was 4 years old I had a ColecoVision, playing ports of early 80s arcade games. They're simple, often only "one screen" and loop. I could play them all day (and did!). "Pac-Man" has just a 4-direction joystick and no buttons, for example.
The crash Bandicoot trilogy is great. Played them myself on the PS1 when I was little. Also any Lego game should be good for a 6 year old, as well as Disney Dreamlight Valley if he likes disney.
Favourite series are Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Valkyria Chronicles, Nier, Ace Combat and GTA.
@philwhite With respect to the other posters I wouldn't give a 6 year old something like Super Mario 3D All Stars unless they were into games already as they aren't newbie friendly, I also wouldn't give me them shovelware just because it's got a cartoon dog on it either.
Since you're after something educational try Labo which is part arts & craft plus basic programming, Scribblenauts Mega Pack which is good for spelling or Game Builder Garage which teaches the basic of game development.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Uh...I disagree. I was actually better at reflex-based gaming at 6-7 years old, then I am now. Skill-wise I'm probably better now, but at 35 my slower reflexes make old-school platformers quite challenging to say the least.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika I'm not saying you're wrong about those being hard, just that those games can actually be even harder for adults past a certain age than young kids. Once you hit 30 your reflexes quickly begin to slow down. I hear you can slow this by consistently playing reflex-based games or doing reflex-based tasks, chores, and exercises, but since I don't do any of that and instead main turn-based JRPG's my reflexes have dropped off a cliff lol.🤣
Okay wow, I'm starting to bellyache like an old man haha, life lessons do that to you though lol.🧙
Nintendo Switch Sports would probably be good, I haven't played it myself but if it's anything like it's Wii predecessors it should be easy for kids to pick up.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
@philwhite Paw Patrol: On a Roll is great because it has complete VoiceOver so your kid doesn't need to be able to read to follow it.
My son is also 6 and he really enjoys Mario Kart and Pokemon Sword. I mean, he isn't going far in the storyline by any means but he has figured out the battle mechanics (despite the term, Pokemon is very non-violent) and he is working out the controls and having fun. He also enjoys Sonic: Colors and with some help, Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Currently Playing: Pokemon Sword, Disney Dreamlight Valley
