Logically, this won't affect me because I'll be playing Zelda and other new games at launch.

Emotionally, though, yea - this sucks.

Meh. I stopped caring about the Virtual Console a couple of years ago.

I can only speak for myself but, why would anyone buy a console day 1 to play emulated games?

Updated old games yes...

I don't get the uproar either, especially considering the fact that 99% of people buying this at launch will be playing Breath of the Wild.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

How is this not supporting the VC? You just contradicted yourself

As much as I'm sure it'll come soon enough and the fact that I'll have Zelda to keep me occupied in the mean time. The lack of VC does kinda annoy me. Specifically because I skipped the New 3DS despite really wanting a decent portable SNES VC for two reasons. Firstly I had a gut feeling that the "NX" was a new portable system and was coming soon. Secondly because I had a gut feeling that "NX" was going to handle previous purchases better.

So as we got closer to launch it looks more and more like I was right to not bother with the New 3DS. Not just for the portable SNES VC. I start to get a bit optimistic about it. I start thinking about how maybe, with some luck, on launch day after the firmware update I go into the eShop. It greets me by noticing the VC games I have on the Wii U. It then tells me that some of these are on the eShop already and asks if I want to download F-Zero and Super Mario World. Optimistic? Sure. But it would have been cool.

So yeah, that's not going to happen now. So I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer for the Switch to be better than the New 3DS in that regard. Which is mildly annoying.

What about E3? Nintendo coming to the Expo releasing it with GC VC?

I was holding off purchasing Harvest Moon 64 in hope the VC on Switch would have it. Ahhh well, I can just grab it on WiiU but the portability would have been nice.

the point is that people were expecting the GameCube VC to be available at launch - which was probably a bit unrealistic to begin with, but I think people should be entitled to expect new products to be better than old products. With Nintendo you always wish for a Ferrari and get a wheelbarrow instead though.

You have to remember that Nintendo has halted development of nearly everything beside Zelda to get prepared for the Switch - in 2016 how many console games have they developed?! Like, 1 and a half?! - so the lack of so many basic functions in the Switch at launch is disappointing.

No.

During E3 they'll lift the curtains and expect everyone to get hyped about NES games again. It worked a dozen times before, so I expect it again. The weekly trickle will begin and the Switch will be over and done with by the time GameCube is even considered as VC.

What "basic functions" other than VC is the Switch lacking at launch? And to be clear, including VC as a "basic function" is generous, but I'll give it to you nonetheless.

well the lack of clear details on how the online service will be carried out would be one. The lack of a web-browser or streaming apps would be another. Or the lack of the video capture function, for which you have a button on the joycons. Again, call them basic, call them superfluous - but this is stuff most consoles nowadays have and Nintendon't. If that's not basic, what is?! The videogames?! It's not like you're getting a ton of games anyway.

And speaking about games, the big game that justify the existence of the console, doesn't even use the properties of the new controllers. So, assuming you're smart enough not to buy a videogame where you pretend you are eating a sandwich, or milking a cow, or guessing how many balls you have in your sack - you won't even be able to know what the JoyCons do at launch.

I think we don't even know what will be of our previous VC purchases on Wii/WiiU yet. Will we be able to carry them over?! Will we have to rebuy them or pay a fee just to "re-unlock" them?! As a customer, you should be able to know these things before you actually buy a device, right?!

VC at launch would be more than basic or important, as it's the single most talked about Nintendo thing, and has been for ages. According to people, GameCube Virtual Console will help us defeat AIDS.
As it stands now, you're not getting any VC game at launch, and nobody can tell what you'll be getting after it. You might get one laughable NES game a week like WiiU did. As far as we know, VC releases might not start until this summer, or fall, or January 2018. It feels like 75% of the news I'm reading begin with "The Switch won't...".

And if you go on Amazon, currently there's 8 games and 9 carrying cases for the Switch. Which, you gotta admit, is hilarious.

I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. Who's to say that some of this stuff like the VC doesn't come out within a month or so? Netflix and the like is definitely happening at some point. They have a feature in the menu which allows you to suspend sleep mode if you're watching a video. What else is that going to be for? And in any case Netflix and Youtube apps are out of their hands anyways.

With the online services people keep going on about how we have no detail. Yet from what I can tell they're not actually going to ask for money until later this year anyway. There are virtually no games that need it until Mario Kart a couple of months after launch. And what are people really expecting, for it to be less feature rich than the Wii U and 3DS?

The way I see it the only thing Nintendo aren't doing at launch that is a bit of a disappointment is the web browser. But even then they have a potentially good reason for it. The browser was how the Wii U and 3DS were hacked to run pirated software. I can't blame them for being cautious.

the point about online is - people should know as much as possible about it before the console is released. Say you get the console day one and then you don't like how the online service is carried out and don't want to subscribe this fall = you are stuck with a console that doesn't go online.
I mean, Nintendo is literally asking you to trust them.

I'll be the first to admit none of this would have been a big deal had the transition from WiiU to Switch been smoother, but - as said - Nintendo halted everything to get ready for March 3rd. Of the three console games they published in 2016, none was entirely developed in-house. So, it's kind of strange to see the Switch lacking things (or plans) at launch. Personally, they should have made much more.

And about the hacking thing, I honestly can't believe Nintendo omitted the web-browser for security reasons. I check the news daily and I didn't have a clue that the WiiU and 3DS could be hacked - and if I didn't, so didn't the general audience I guess.
Can you hack the WiiU and 3DS to pirate games illegaly downloaded from the internet?! If you can...you should have told me sooner!!

I think people are disapponted because rumors were telling us that we were getting GC VC. Can't trust rumors. I think most of the pre switch presentation rumors were false.

A lot of them definitely were. People always acted like anyone who dared question Laura Kate Dale were mentally challenged, and look at how much stuff she got wrong. A lot of people in general got a lot of stuff wrong, though.

I'm sorry, I just really think your response to my question is seriously flawed. I asked you what the Switch is missing at launch aside from VC, and the only thing you could come up with was... VC lol

Yea, we don't have details on online yet. Here are the details that matter: the Switch system is capable of connecting to Nintendo's network straight out of the box. How do we know that? Because it's going to download that day-one patch, which has become the norm with the industry. It's going to give you access to the eShop, and you'll be able to play stuff like Bomberman online. Shocking, right? So much new info - mind is blown.

What more do you want? They were clear from the get-go that the internet service was going to be free until Fall '17, so what exactly are you complaining about? It's going to be exactly like the Wii U's online service for the first few months. You're literally complaining about a free service. Whether or not you hate the free game for a month system is besides the fact. You already got the details on it. If you hate it, you hate it. Thanks for letting us know.

I don't think you're aware that Fast Racing Neo, a launch title, uses HD rumble, either. In fact, you just seem to be rather generally ill-informed and/or have an axe to grind here for some reason. You also seem to have more knowledge about the 28-some minigames in 1, 2 Switch than any media outlet. Can you please give us more of your top-secret details on everything included in the game? Thanks.

And I have no idea what makes the accessories industry funny? That comment was just weird lol Like... companies trying to make money off a new console launch - hilarious, right? You realize most of those cases and stuff are from third-parties, right? I mean... lol I don't know man. Your post: lol

uh no, I don't think I need to explain it better than I did previously. The online thing - the problem I have with it is that you'll only know the details once the console is already out. At the moment, we know very little about it, and I may be ill-informed, but if I'm not mistaken we don't even know if non-subscribers will have access to the basic eShop discounts.
Maybe I'm in a minority, but when I buy a product I feel I should know what I'm getting into. If I buy the console on 3rd March and then they announce the online plan next July and I don't like it, or I don't think it's worth my money - I'm stuck with a console that doesn't go online. Whereas if people knew all the details about online, or what happens to their previous purchases through NNID before the console gets released, everybody could take a wiser decision. I wonder how many people will subscribe to online even though they find the service lackluster, just because they have the console - so they don't have much of a choice (not playing online is not a choice in 2017).

It doesn't take a genius to understand this simple concept of "let the customers know what they are getting into before they buy", so I'm actually shocked I had to repeat it twice. But I get most people would subscribe to a Nintendo online service regardless of quality and quantity, so I understand it's a lost cause to talk about it. Even if they didn't offer the free rent or doubled the price, you would subscribe anyway, so why on earth are we even talking about this.

As for 1-2-Switch, I have seen, like many, only a fraction of the 28 mini games available. And what I think is that - unless what I haven't seen is pure brillance that can revolutionise the videogame world - it's really an overpriced, stupid game that makes you do stupid things that you might as well do in real life, for free and without a videogame. Your opinion is that it is a good game?! Fine. Mine is that it's stupid. Fair, right?! But we all know it's going to score a 7 or an 8 on NintendoLife anyway.

I wasn't aware of Fast Racing NEO having HD Rumble, but it makes no difference, because Zelda should have been the game to use these features - not a port of a WiiU game. Instead Nintendo, being the bunch of idiots that it is, has decided to:

  • cripple the WiiU version to make a Switch port that doesn't use any specific features of the Switch
  • delay the WiiU version so it couldn't be launched before Zelda Switch
  • rush the Switch launch so it could be launched with Zelda

basically to do three things fast and at the same time, they are not doing a single one well. Otherwise there would be no reason why a modern console would be released with just an handful of games ready, an ocean of tentative games that don't even exist in logo form, a mysterious online plan that is not yet decided, system bugs that disconnect the controllers, lack of Virtual Console, which like it or not has been a staple of Nintendo consoles for a decade, lack of web-browser and streaming apps etc.

What else - uh the carrying cases. I just thought that it was funny that a console had more carrying cases then games available. If you stopped being so defensive about a mass produced electronic device, you would find it funny too.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

@spizzamarozzi
That's a lot to read, and I'll be honest, I skimmed it, but you're really grasping at straws, man. Just my opinion.

Personally, I don't need to know literally everything about the online service, especially because it's going to be free for the first few months, and it's going to allow me to play my Nintendo games online, just like on Wii U and 3DS. If it turns out I don't want to pay the cost when they flip the proverbial cost switch (ha), then I won't. So this is thing #1 that you're really dramatizing that's pretty silly.

You rambled about 1-2 Switch's score on Nintendolife - confession: I didn't even know NL gave numbered scores lol (sorry) I don't get my reviews here. Sounds like you shouldn't either, because it seems to get under your skin a bit.

And yea, again, sorry, not gonna read that essay you came up with. I think you're just a mad dude without his facts straight.
