Hi

Just wondered if anyone else has had any luck trying to get Nintendo to restore their ACNH save from the cloud back-up.

I bought a new switch as the fan on the old one died and have contacted them several times about getting the back-up restored but have had no response.

Thanks
Adam

@hotheresmallfry Pasted the directions below, in case you hadn't seen these yet. Select the "Restore Island" option at bottom of that page to expand it. (To answer your question, you'd be the first I've seen here to restore island data, since Nintendo implemented that option in July)

How To Restore Island Save Data (for replacement switch consoles only)
Contacting Nintendo is required. For approval, I'm guessing.

edit: Currently it appears CHAT is available - their support chat messenger.

Gut punch An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is also required

Wonder how the backup that Nintendo is talking and how that will be? Problem here is to make sure you backup or upload to redownload before changing your Switch.

So then. After a protracted back and forth (which required lots of chasing from me to get responses) my request for a save restore was approved.

However, the mechanism by which I’m supposed to start the restore does not work. Hold down ‘-‘ key as the game boots per the instructions I was given, but this does nothing and I end up at the nook desk as if I’m starting a new island.

Not impressed so far. Nintendo had better offer to come and clear those weeds when I finally get it back!@WoomyNNYes

@hotheresmallfry Whoah. Holding the minus button while ACNH boots? Did you tell them it's not working? I wonder what they'll say in response.

I would have thought someone at Nintendo also has to toggle something in their system, or your account, to allow the save data restore. Very interesting. If they do have to toggle the permission to your account, I wonder if it's a limited time window, or one time approval. And if you screw it up, maybe you need approval again? I'm totally guessing here. Well, this is very interesting. I'm very interested to hear if you talk to Nintendo and get another go. If you COULD call Nintendo support, keep them on the while you try it. But due to covid disruptions, I'm assuming Nintendo UK support line is still closed? Your situation would defintely benefit from the back & forth of a phone call or chat messenger. Email is so clunky and slow for troubleshooting, if you need back & forth interaction.

You know, they way people hack the Switch, there's a button sequence combo that you press when booting up the Switch (like a cheat code, believe it or not) to access the OS, for developer purposes. And after lots of people hacked the Switch, Nintendo changed the buttons code. So, holding the minus (-) button while booting ACNH is how to restore the save data. Interesting

Told them it’s not working, now they’ve asked to see a video of me trying it. They seem to have woken up now, replying to my emails very quickly!@WoomyNNYes

My wife was able to download her backup on her new Switch pretty easy. She did it all over online chat with Nintendo. She had to log into her Nintendo Account and deactivate the Switch Lite as her primary device and then followed the steps they gave her to download the backup. It was pretty easy honestly in a Nintendo kind of way. Obviously it could be a lot more straight forward. Its funny how secure they want the Animal Crossing save data to be. My wife brought up a good point about it. Its not like there is any money at stake with people cheating the game with save data. You pay for the game once and that's it. Theres no DLC that's being circumvented with cheating. But its their game and we're playing it.

@WoomyNNYes @DTMOF84 Island finally restored. I sent them a video of the backup failing to work, they couldn't open the video. Tried again a few days later and it worked first time. Some weeding to be done and a few grumbles from the residents, but finally back in business.

Four weeks from first contacting Nintendo but got there in the end...
