We recently got a new switch (regular not lite) and we were wondering if we transfer our downloaded animal crossing data if it would keep us on the old island or start a new one? Or would we need to buy a cartridge?

@cottontail Sorry to break the news. Animal Crossing New Horizons game progress cannot be transferred to another Switch console. (disappointing, yes) Nintendo has said the ability to transfer to another console could come before the end of 2020.

You can share a cartridge, but only one console can play it at a time. Cartridge must be inserted to be played. If two consoles want to play Animal Crossing at the same time, you'll need two copies. Doesn't matter if its physical or digital. edit: With the Switch, game saves are stored on the console internal memory, not on cartridges (like the 3ds did).

Here's an official Nintendo support page on the save data transfer matter.

"If I purchase a second system, can I transfer the save file (island data) to a different console?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support the ability to transfer your save file from one Nintendo Switch system to another at this time. We currently plan on adding a save data transfer feature later in the year. Information on the feature and timing will be announced at a future time, so please check Nintendo.com for more details as they become available."
