It's amazing how New Horizons even cut house upgrades. It really feels like they took 2 steps forwards and a lot of steps behind when it came to this game. It has outdoor customization and a cool terrain feature, but if you aren't someone who cares about the creative stuff in animal crossing, and likes the simulation aspect more.. the game sort of leaves you in the dark, waiting for updates.
Yes, more house upgrades would be nice, but with the ability to freely sculpt and decorate your island to your heart's content, I don't find myself spending as much time decorating my house as I did in New Leaf. So while you say it's two steps forward and several steps back, I would describe as it as one giant leap forward, and maybe a couple of steps back.
As for the "simulation aspect", I can't imagine what you think is missing since the interactions with your town citizens in New Horizons seem to be about on par with New Leaf. They could certainly have been kicked up a notch with more elaborate conversations and tasks, so it's not a step forward, but I don't see how there has been a step back from previous games.
@Mountain_Man interaction with your villagers is watered down completely in this game. There’s no actual reason to really talk to your villagers anymore, as the dialogue is even more repetitive than the last game. Not to mention bigger features which also got caught, such as tortimer’s island, brewster, shop upgrades, other different stores, and the holidays themselves really just being watered down versions of New Leaf’s holidays. Customization took a huge step forwards, but it sacrificed everything else for it.

@MarioLover92 Hahaha, I stepped outside my house and it was the second DIY I looked at (if you've been to my island, you'd know why that is funny — and unlikely)! xD

But in what way? Maybe my memories of New Leaf are incorrect because it has been two years since I last played it, but I'm not finding anything lacking in New Horizons that I remember from New Leaf. The interactions seem to be just as limited and repetitive as they have always been. The only thing that comes to mind from New Leaf is the ability for the animals to schedule visits to your home, which wasn't that great of a feature anyway. They would show up at the designated time, wander aimlessly around your house for a couple of minutes, make one or two random comments, and then say, "Okay, well, I guess I'll be leaving now." After doing that a few times, I just got in the habit of refusing any request to visit my home, so it's not a feature I miss.
@BrittGOAL14 I mean, I get why there's hardly any on the main island.. but it's still not great for the gameplay longevity. Less stores mean less items and less content in a way.

@Mountain_Man It's just the dialogue quality in general for the villagers themselves. The dialogue feels more pointless than the past games, and it feels like they repeat a lot of stuff more often than they used to.

It almost took an entire 365 days. I’M ON TARANTULA ISLAND!! 3 of them were huddled in the same spot at one point. Caught one and got hit by the next. 😂 Super stoked tonight.

I JUST looked up when the tarantula will be around, it says it's going away on May. Never caught one unfortunately, it always hits me and they are ridiculously rare. -_-
Edit: Ugh, I'm stupid. Forgive me. I confused it for the scorpion, that's the one I had trouble with. That one I'll have to wait a couple months to try to catch again.
@foxyflimflam you are very welcome. If i get anymore you need I will send them on. It was easy to get around your island. I used the in-game map to find the different places. It has changed a lot since the last time I saw it (:

I honestly don't remember the villager interactions in New Leaf being any less pointless and repetitive.
@BrittGOAL14 Yeah, I did find one in a patch of flowers one time. Wish me luck on catching one. Great job on catching a tarantula, by the way!
@Mountain_Man@DarthNocturnal Same here. It's admittedly been a while since I played New Leaf (I might play it again for nostalgia's sake though), but yeah the villager dialogue in New Horizons seems to be on par with that game.
