So now with Links Awakening announced I think it’s safe to say that Nintendo will carry on releasing ‘2d style’ games as well as the 3d games we’ve been used to since Ocarina of Time. But...with Breath of the Wild going full open world action RPG will we get three styles of zelda games going forward? I’d like to see a blend of traditional dungeons and ‘open world’ gameplay. However, a return to more enclosed classical design would also be awesome (am hoping for an oot/mm sequel).
That would be cool but might lead to saturation, though I'd think I'd eat them up anyway. Arguably we already have a third tier of spin offs/crossovers: links crossbow training, hyrule warriors, cadence of hyrule etc
Nintendo wants to make Zelda an annual franchise, so chances are good we're going to see many Zelda games across a myriad of genres with several different developers getting an opportunity to use the Zelda IP.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,473 games (as of July 4th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 2 games (as of June 9th, 2025)
Of course, there is a third tier of Zelda games which has been in the works for flipping ages. There are the 3D games, the 2D games ... and then there’s the mobile game. It’s coming.
Actually, it could be brilliant - let’s not prejudge - or it could be the worst thing to happen to the series since the Philips CDi. Let’s see, eh?
I'd like very much for there to just be 3D and 2D. Breath of the Wild is one of the best games ever, but I've been waiting for a new 3D Zelda game since 2012 and I'm still waiting.
Imagine Demaking a traditional 3d zelda (oot for example) to a 2d game like alttp.

@grumblevolcano god i hope not. botw is fun to run around in (i’m pushing 200 hours trust me) but i find the world just soulless, tbh. no memorable characters and no music, the world had no character or feeling. i just played through oot 3d and had so much more fun playing it than botw. everything was just as i remembered from playing it 10 years ago on n64.
